2024 has come and gone, and we're now onto a new year, and a new week of What's Trending on Streaming. The passing of another year signifies many things, including the return of broadcast TV, a primary source of top-tier content for the streaming services, which has mostly been in hibernation for the past few weeks. Those returns began this week, with the launch of a new Fox Thursday lineup, the returns of NBC's Friday lineup, and the launch of a new ABC unscripted series.
Hulu:
It was another turbulent week on Hulu. Broadcast began its big return towards the end of the week, but for the most part, the week was still made up of mostly specials, daytime programs, cartoons, and popular shows that ended months ago, with several shows breaking onto the chart after last charting months ago - when they were still airing new epodes. Bob's Burgers rose to the top of the chart for the first time since this column began in October, with the much-loved Fox cartoon continuing what has been a very strong month for the show. It didn't leave the top five for the first six days of this week, only falling to seventh place on Saturday once new entries pushed it down the chart. Speaking of those new entries, one of them went to #1 - Hell's Kitchen, which also looked strong the last time it aired in December. It hit #1 on Saturday, after its first full day of its newest episode being added to Hulu, though a partial day of streaming on Friday already got it up to a solid #4 on the chart. New Fox comedy Going Dutch premiered at #9 on Friday before rising to #4 the next day, while Animal Control was missing on Friday, but broke onto the list at #5 the next day. Hell's Kitchen's time slot rival, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, also started its run at the top of the chart, starting at #6 and rising to #2 the next day. Two shows led the chart multiple times this week - anime BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War and ABC daytime soap General Hospital. While General Hospital charted the entire week, BLEACH only held in the top fifteen for five days despite its strong start. Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest led the chart on Thursday, though it was down to #12 on Friday and off the chart entirely by Saturday. Other specials to chart strong included The Year: 2024, which remained on the chart for four days and peaked at #2, a 20/20 special memorializing the late Jimmy Carter, which charted for three days, and a special edition of 20/20 about Luigi Mangione, which charted for five and remains on the chart as of Saturday. The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony also charted, peaking at #3. The ceremony originally aired on Disney+ in October, and was available to stream there for a time, but made its broadcast debut on ABC on Wednesday, reigniting interest as it was added to Hulu. Fox animated sitcoms The Simpsons and Universal Basic Guys both charted, with The Simpsons charting for six days and Universal Basic Guys charting for just two. High Potential and Family Guy remained on the chart despite neither airing new episodes in at least a month, with High Potential charting as high as #3. Several shows made surprise appearances towards the bottom of the chart, including the soon-to-return Will Trent and The Rookie, Hulu originals Only Murders in the Building and Tell Me Lies, long-ended sitcom Modern Family, and, perhaps most inexplicable of all, canceled ABC game show Lucky 13.

Disney+:
Christmas programming exited the Disney+ chart this week, but not without one last hurrah. Home Alone 2 finished its run by charting at #1 for the first two days of the week before dropping off the chart, while the Simpsons' Disney+-exclusive Christmas special charted for three days. The departure of holiday films made way for some new entries at #1. The 2019 Lion King remake took #1 for a single day, while Deadpool & Wolverine returned to #1, taking the top spot three times this week. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew was the only series to go to #1 this week. It was a stronger week than average for the Star Wars spinoff, at least in terms of chart positions. In addition to rising to #1, the lowered competition led to the show charting each day of this week, never dropping below #6. Another spinoff of a popular film franchise, Inside Out series Dream Productions, remained on the chart for the entirety of the week, rising as high as #3 despite its entire season being released nearly a month ago. Marvel animated series What If...?, which finished airing its final season on December 29, didn't go out on top, charting for just two days, and at #9. Other films to chart for multiple days this week included Nightbitch, John Wick, Paddington, Amber Alert and The Lion King II: Simba's Pride.

Peacock:
Peacock continued to look a bit more like Bravo+ than the streaming offshoot of NBC, though scripted did still have its place on the service. Few ongoing NBC programs charted this week, with their new comedies being the network's only representation on the chart. St. Denis Medical charted the first five days of the week, before falling off on Friday. Happy's Place returned to the chart briefly on Sunday, but then returned on Saturday. It was the first time in the show's run that it charted on Saturday, the day after the release of a new episode, usually taking until Sunday to chart, when it's had a full day of streaming to boost its position. Lopez vs Lopez did not join Happy's Place in charting. It was a different NBC comedy, one that ended over a decade ago, that led the chart, with The Office remaining at #1 for the entire week. Peacock original comedy Laid started off the week in the same #2 spot it held since December 20, but dropped to third on January 1, losing out to Kevin Hart/Kenan yearly recap special 2024: Back That Year Up, which returned to the chart a week after its previous lone appearance. Laid turned to #2 on January 2, but was down to #4 the next day, then #5 the day after that, so it seems to be on the decline. The Colin Firth-led true crime drama Lockerbie: A Search for the Truth, centered around the bombing of a 1988 Pan Am flight in the UK, dropped all five episodes this week. It immediately debuted at #2, and held there the next day as well. The Day of the Jackal and Based on a True Story also remained on the chart this week despite both ending long ago. Hallmark drama The Way Home, which will have new episodes added the day after episodes air on Hallmark, started out the season at #10 on Saturday. Everything else on the chart was a reality show. Southern Charm and its spinoff, Southern Hospitality, both charted this week, as did Love After Lockup, Real Housewives of both Beverly Hills and Orange County, Below Deck Sailing Yacht, and Married to Medicine. A preview of the new season of The Traitors, which premieres next week, was released this week and drew enough interest to rise to #3 on the chart.

Paramount+:
It was another slow week for Paramount+. There were few changes to the landscape, and absolutely zero new entries on the chart. Landman remained king, and topped the chart each day this week. Lioness and Tulsa King were always close behind. NCIS remained a top player, while NCIS: Origins remained nowhere to be found. Fellow Monday show The Neighborhood also essentially disappeared this week, with just two appearances in the top ten for the week. Its fellow comedy, Ghosts, made the chart each day this week, as did Blue Bloods. These were CBS's only shows to chart for the week, as their entire lineup is MIA until nearly February, and only a few game shows will keep the lights on until then. It remains to be seen whether any of those shows can chart. Prequel series Dexter: Original Sin continued to fuel renewed interest in the original Dexter, with the parent series out-streaming the new prequel every day this week. In fact, while Dexter charted each day this week, Original Sin only charted the last two days of the week.

Max:
Though it didn't air a new episode in the last week, Dune: Prophecy didn't look much weaker this week than it did in the week of its finale, leading the chart for the first five days of the week, having returned to the top perch after losing out on #1 to The Sex Lives of College Girls last Saturday. Only at the end of the week did the show display signs of slippage, having slid to #3 on the service on Friday and an all-time low of #4 on Saturday. The decline will likely only continue from there, but this was still a good week for the show, having held strong on the list despite several other entries airing new episodes more recently. The first show to dethrone it for the week was Creature Commandos, DC's animated comedy that's already been renewed for a second season. It topped the chart on Friday, having spent all but one day this week in the top 5 of the chart. The Sex Lives of College Girls took over the #1 slot on Saturday, and had a strong week in all, never dropping below #4. Fellow Max original comedy Bookie had a solid week, rising to its highest peak of the season - #3 on the chart - and charting each day of the week. HBO's NFL docuseries Hard Knocks had another solid week, peaking at #2 and again charting every day. Also charting every day this week was satirical anthology series The White Lotus, which won't be back until mid-February but, as one of HBO's most popular and acclaimed current offerings, is already building up buzz for its return. International production The Head charted five times in the last week, while Friends game show Fast Friends weakened even more in the last week, charting for just three times this week and peaking at #9 - a drop from its #6 peak last week. In an unusual move, Shining Vale, a show that first aired on HBO's premium cable rival Starz (though produced by Max owners Warner Bros.), was added to Max this week. It debuted well on the chart, debuting at #3 - ahead of several ongoing Max originals. It was down to #6 by the next day, and closed out the week in the same spot. Also coming to Max this week was the fourth and final season of Superman & Lois. The CW original entered at the bottom of the chart but rose the next day to #8.
