The Goldbergs: The Goldbergs has gone through the ringer in recent seasons, between cast changes, sinking ratings, and even a new time slot. This year, things were looking worse than ever for it, as the aged veteran hit a string of weak 0.4s that appeared to signify its impending end. And yet, things did begin to look up for it: it rallied a bit after its fourth episode and pulled closer to the league average. More importantly, though, ABC seemed to indicate that they aren't all that thrilled with Home Economics, replacing the series on their midseason lineup with a different comedy. Not Dead Yet could be a success, but midseason comedy success is relatively rare, and so I truly doubt that the network is going to want two open comedy slots after this season. With Economics likely gone, The Goldbergs seems like a solid #3 on ABC at this point, which should probably be enough for a renewal, even if they don't own it. Sony will likely give them a good deal in order to get one of their most valuable shows renewed, as I highly doubt they want this show to be unceremoniously canceled after ten seasons. I don't think ABC would cancel it without notice to write a proper finale, either, and the time for that is surely coming up soon. While its renewal odds remain a bit fragile, a renewal is looking quite a bit more likely than a cancellation. It LEANS RENEWAL.

Abbott Elementary: One comedy surely sticking around is the award-winning Abbott Elementary, which ABC renewed this week. I had long seen the digital powerhouse and strong linear performer as ABC's most likely renewal of the season - it was one of only two shows rated a "certain renewal" by me ahead of the season. Quinta Brunson's class will likely remain in session for many years to come as Abbott solidifies itself as a broadcast powerhouse.
