The Last Man on Earth Season 4 Episode 6 Review ’Double Cheeseburger’

***Spoilers Ahead***

Double Cheeseburger

Childbirth has been a central theme on The Last Man on Earth since day one. In fact, Carol and Tandy have tried to make a baby since the second episode of the series. Additionally, the moment when Carol realized she was pregnant was a significant milestone for the show. With all that said, the way that 'Double Cheeseburger' handles the birth is incredibly disappointing. It takes the elements of a stellar episode and condenses it into a rather tedious outing.

The A-plot focuses on Tandy and Gail attempting to get Carol's second baby out of her. Despite being the main focus of the episode, the second birth was as anti-climatic as the first. Nothing suspenseful or exciting happened throughout the story. After three seasons of building fear and suspense about her birth, it was more than a little disappointing that everything went so smoothly. Overall, the story did not feel pivotal or significant despite its subject matter.

On the other hand, the B-plot brought some solid comedy to the table Todd's desperate need to hang out with Dawn led to some hilarious interactions with Erica and Melissa. In a season that has been generally uninteresting, Mel Rodriguez has been killing it in the comedy department.

'Double Cheeseburger' is an important yet uninteresting installment. I wish the writers had handled the situation in a serious manner. Nevertheless, the final moments of the episode somewhat redeemed 'Double Cheeseburger'. Seeing Tandy faintly sing 'Closure' while surrounded by his loved ones and holding his child is a testament to Phil Miller's emotional growth as a character. Plus, naming the baby 'Mike' was a great move on Carol's part. So, while I haven't enjoyed this season nearly as much as the others, I'm glad that Tandy continues to mature and evolve.

Stray Thoughts
  • "I'm 43 calendar years old. That's 2 adults with a 7-year old on top." For someone who isn't very good at math, that was some quick thinking on Tandy's part.
  • I like how doing cocaine is less shameful in Todd's eyes than taking care of a baby.
  • Naming the baby "Mike" reminds me of when Mike named the worm "Phil" back in season 2. I wonder if there's any significance to that.
  • Erica's reaction to Carol's painless birth embodied what I was thinking while watching.
  • Fun Fact: Jasper was not in this episode.

Grade: B-
