SETTING: Bullpen of the Bridgeport Zebras. The bullpen coach, ELENA, is giving a speech to the bullpen, KATIE, TRISH, KRISTIN, CAROLYN, and VAL, as well as the bullpen catcher, MARISSA.
ELENA
Listen up guys. I know the season's been off to a rough start.
TRISH
What are you talking about? We're like 8-0.
KRISTIN
8-0? We've lost at least one game.
VAL
One game? Don't we lose like, all of them?
MARISSA
Does anybody here pay attention? We have 5 wins and 4 losses.
ELENA
Alright, none of you close to being right, but that's not what I was referring to.
CAROLYN
No need to be mean about it...
ELENA
I'm not being mean about it! Come on, do I sound like I'm being mean?
TRISH
You could've just validated my 8-0 guess and let us all be delusional.
ELENA
As opposed to just you being delusional?
TRISH throws her hands up in exasperation.
TRISH
She's at it again, girls.
KATIE
You know Elena, it's kind of hard to win a game when you drag us down like that.
ELENA
You don't even pitch!
KATIE
Yeah but...I might. Right?
ELENA shakes her head.
CAROLYN
Elena, I think you were saying something? You called a meeting...
ELENA
Right. Yeah, so I've decided I'm gonna start being nicer.
Everyone just stares at ELENA.
TRISH
That's good and all, but what's the meeting about?
ELENA
That I'm gonna start being nicer!
MARISSA
No, originally. Before we convinced you to start being nicer.
ELENA
This was my decision.
VAL
Yeah, sure it was.
CAROLYN
Does it really matter whose decision it was? All that matters is things are gonna get better. Right Elena?
ELENA
Yeah, sure.
MARISSA
Cool. Anyone wanna warm up so I can catch?
TRISH
I'll do it. Got a ball?
MARISSA
Nope.
VAL
I got something you could use.
VAL tosses TRISH a bag of peanuts, who then starts warming up in the bullpen by throwing the bag of peanuts to MARISSA. Suddenly, the crowd starts laughing.
ELENA
What are they laughing at?
KRISTIN
Look behind you.
Everyone looks to the outfield screen to see TRISH and MARISSA on camera.
ELENA
This is embarrassing. I gotta put an end to this.
ELENA starts to get up off the bench.
KRISTIN
What happened to being nice?
ELENA sighs.
ELENA
Well, we'll see how this plays out then.
As the crowd continues laughing, the bullpen phone rings. ELENA answers.
ELENA [on the phone]
Yes, I know. I'm getting it under control...Oh. You do? Okay then...
ELENA hangs up and walks over to TRISH.
ELENA
Trish, they like what they see in the dugout. Get ready to pitch.
TRISH
I am pitching.
ELENA
In the game.
TRISH's jaw drops.
TRISH
I don’t think I’m ready for that.
ELENA doesn’t answer. TRISH enters the game, and proceeds to throw a perfect inning..
