CBS has ordered to series a reboot of Matlock starring Kathy Bates in the titular role. It will be produced by CBS Studios, much like how the original was produced by Viacom Productions, CBS’s former in-house studio.
As described in a former press release, here is the official synopsis for the Matlock reboot:
After achieving success in her younger years, the brilliant septuagenarian Madeline Matlock (Kathy Bates) rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and willy tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within. Based on the classic television series of the same name.
The original show began on NBC in 1986, and finished in the top 20 in the ratings for each of its first 5 seasons. After a ratings slide and company restructuring, NBC canceled Matlock after its sixth season, only for it to air three more on ABC. With this reboot, the Matlock title will have now aired on all three broadcast networks that program 10 pm. You can find all seasonal averages for Matlock from 1986 through 1995 in our Ratings History Library.
