The Automobiles are in the dugout. It is the end of the first game of the season. GARRY arrives.
GARRY
You guys ready to play some baseball?!
COLTON
The game just ended. We played for like three hours.
GARRY
Yeah, but I haven’t asked you yet. I got here a few minutes late.
JAXON
A few minutes? You just got here!
GARRY
I know, I know. Work kept me busy.
SANTIAGO
You’ve said many times that this is your job.
GARRY
It is.
WESLEY
Oooooooooh Coach Garry lied to us, he has another job doesn’t he?
GARRY
I don’t have another job! I lost track of the time.
GAVIN
You mean you fell asleep?
GARRY
How’d you know?
GAVIN
For one you sound kinda groggy right now.
GARRY
I told myself I would only take a quick nap but it ended up spilling into the start of the game. Glad you guys could figure things out by yourselves though.
LANDON
Yeah, we just randomly decided who would bat when and who would play what positions.
COOPER
It ended up going pretty well.
GARRY
Did you win?
COOPER
No, but for a little bit it looked like we had a chance!
GARRY
Alright, pep talk time.
HUDSON
Oh no.
GARRY
School’s out, which means we have all summer to work on our skills.
BRAYDEN
Are you a player now? Why are you talking like that?
GARRY
You know what, I’m thinking you guys don’t respect me so much.
JAXON
You missed our first game of the season!
GARRY
I know, I have to do better. And this year, I also need to learn how to listen to you kids more, and learn directly from you what your strengths and weaknesses are. I need to foster a healthy environment for the benefit of the team.
LANDON
Wow, this really turned into you giving yourself your own pep talk.
GARRY
I’m serious. This season, Coach Garry is going to be present for the Automobiles, and he’s gonna get us as many wins as he can. Go team!
As everyone starts to leave the dugout, Brayden’s dad angrily walks toward the dugout.
GARRY
I’m in trouble, aren’t I?
BRAYDEN’S DAD
You sure as hell are in trouble. Why’d you miss my son’s first game?! Do you not care about this team at ALL!?
GARRY
Let’s sit down and talk about this. I really meant to be there, it’s just I fell asleep!
BRAYDEN’S DAD
Are you kidding me?
GARRY
It happens to the best of us, but I am very sorry and it won’t happy again—
GARRY sees many more parents start to walk toward the dugout.
GARRY
For my own safety I’m going to leave now.
GARRY runs to his car and leaves.
