The Fisher Fishers are playing the final inning of their game. DEVIN is on the mound to pitch the last inning and save the 5-run lead. After struggling through his first few hitters, the infielders and catcher meet on the mound.
DEVIN
Sorry I’m sucking so bad, but do I know you
HERNANDO
We’re you’re teammates. Well, for now.
DEVIN
I’m getting fired aren’t I.
HERNANDO
What? No! Well, not that I know of. But I’m on my way to superstardom. Number one shortstop prospect in the league.
TRISTEN
And I would be the Primitives starting third baseman if I wasn’t injured. Heard they got some new guy though so who knows if this’ll be one of those things where they tell you you’re in the minors on a rehab stint and then they keep you there.
HERNANDO
I don’t think that happens.
TRISTEN
Oh it happens. It happens a lot.
DEVIN
So what’s my plan, I’m obviously sucking here.
TRISTEN
Eh. Just throw the ball, maybe someone will stop it.
DEVIN throws the ball to the plate. It is a weak ground ball to third base.
TRISTEN
I meant wait until we were back in our positions!
DEVIN
You’re not gonna at least try to go after it?
TRISTEN
Not with this knee!
DEVIN
Oh. Sorry.
TRISTEN
Tell you what. This time, just lob the ball over the plate. Give him a home run ball so we can get this game over with quickly.
HERNANDO
I don’t think that’s a great idea.
DEVIN
It’s as good an idea as any I could think of.
DEVIN lobs the ball down the middle and finds that nobody on the other team can hit it. He gets through the rest of the inning using only that pitch. The Fisher Fishers have won the game.
DEVIN
Looks like I’m not such a washup after all. Being in the minors is easy.
TRISTEN
My plan worked!
HERNANDO
I wouldn’t get too far ahead of yourself there. But nice end to that inning.
Everyone gathers their belongings and leaves.
