1974-75 Soap Ratings

Written by Bridger Cunningham

Expansion fever started in 1975, changing the soap world as fans knew it.  As Another World aired a successful hour-long entry the previous season, pushing it into 1st place during many weeks in 1974, NBC decided to toy with the format and expanded AW in January.  This left NBC few options other than continue their block to 1:30, leaving its newest soap fighting off 1st Place ATWT.  HTSAM ended its run in April, and NBC handed its timeslot to DAYS' recent 60-minute expansion.

Scheduling moves did a number on several franchises.  ATWT regained lost ground from 1974, gaining over a point and pushing past NBC's successful 2nd and 3rd place entries.  SFT reclaimed 1.7 points after a disastrous prior season, pushing from 9th to 4th place.  This likely was ode to Y&R gaining 2.2 ratings points as it developed, jumping from 13th to 9th place.  AMC held its course without competition, and The Doctors lost a half point.  GL gained ground, and GH tumbled for unexplainable reasons, losing seven-tenths.  Neighboring OLTL also tumbled after losing four tenths, dropping from 8th to 11th place.  As Y&R gained an audience, ailing Love of Life regained a point as well after Y&R pushed it into the disastrous 11:30 timeslot.  Somerset could not gain an audience with 2nd place AW as its lead-in, and HTSAM exited the scene.
