1970-71 Soap Ratings

Written by Bridger Cunningham

Unlike the last season, no mid-season changes occurred to the bloated afternoon of original soaps.  The only change came in spring when ABC was forced to clean out two soaps and cancelled A World Apart and ultra-cool Dark Shadows.

ABC could not capitalize on the same success of a soap block like the other networks.  GH demonstrated massive growth, as AMC and A World Apart exhibited slow-but-steady growth.  OLTL and Dark Shadows, however, were losing ground.  OLTL's likely had to do with DS' collapse with losing 2 whole points as the show demonstrated some stability next to GH.  ABC ultimately chopped its lowest fare and also sent DS back to the dark ages.  Most of the class of 1969 and 1970 sat on the bottom of the charts, and NBC's roster began to ignite as they ruled much of the 70's.
