1972-73 Soap Ratings

Written by Bridger Cunningham

CBS felt the realities of losing its stranglehold on the ratings as NBC's powerful scheduling block was gaining speed, and ABC's three soap entries also gained ground.  Come March, it was time to clean house.  WTHI began to weigh down its surrounding shows, and LIAMSP and Secret Storm regularly lost to the other networks.  The network axed WTHI and LIAMSP, replacing WTHI with new soap Y&R.  Deciding to try gameshows during the 3:00 hour, the network shoved Secret Storm to the 4:00 timeslot as it easily beat NBC's Somerset.

ATWT dropped a half point, while DAYS, The Doctors and AW burned strong.  GH lost ground, shedding seven-tenths and tumbling from 2nd to 4th Place.  OLTL and AMC established momentum, pushing their way into the middle of the pack.  EDGE endured a disastrous move to 2:30 as dictated by sponsor Proctor & Gamble, pushing the series from 4th to 10th place.  LIAMSP dropped a point, resulting in the series cancellation.
