NBC hit its zenith this season as its 90-minute trifecta of DAYS/Doctors/AW ruled the top of the charts. So much so that DAYS and AW tied longstanding 1st place champ ATWT. Seeing Return to Peyton Place as not gaining enough ground, NBC axed the series in favor of lesser HTSAM.
ATWT lost nearly a point, putting it in the clutches of strong and stable DAYS and AW. GH lost a half point and was in decline, while accelerating new soap AMC gained almost a tenth. OLTL lost a half point, and SFT lost nearly a point after losing a strong lead-in as Y&R was establishing. EDGE continued to lose ground and lost a half point, while Love of Life shed 1.2 points due to losing its timeslot to newbie Y&R. And after crossing ita 20th anniversary, Secret Storm was cancelled after losing 1.5 points in a season located in the undesirable 4:00 timeslot.
