EXT. FORREST - DAY
A large horde of zombies heads towards the army camp.
EXT. ARMY CAMP - DAY
The camp is devastated. Nothing is salvageable. Dion is watching Hendricks dig graves. Hendricks has dug multiple graves. Frank walks up next to Dion.
FRANK
How is he?
DION
He hasn't taken a break and he won't let me help.
FRANK
I'm sorry about your friends.
DION
They didn't deserve this kind of death. But at least they didn't turn. How's Ava?
FRANK
I haven't talked to her. I don't think she wants to talk to anyone.
DION
Makes sense.
FRANK
Where's Callahan?
DION
Trying to contact the Rig. Figure out what our next move is.
INT. CALLAHAN'S TENT - DAY
Callahan sits in his chair drinking whiskey. He is slightly drunk. Frank enters the tent.
FRANK
Any luck with the Rig?
CALLAHAN
Communications are down.
FRANK
So what now?
CALLAHAN
I don't know.
FRANK
What do mean you don't know?
CALLAHAN
I just lost almost all my soldiers. They were my responsibility.
FRANK
You can't help them now. But we survived and we need you. You’re the leader...
CALLAHAN
You know what's funny? Those soldiers got the better end of this world. They don't have to live in this hell anymore.
Callahan refills his glass.
FRANK
You said a supply ship was coming?
CALLAHAN
In one day.
FRANK
So we get on that boat and go to the Rig. Get away from this.
Callahan doesn't answer.
FRANK
Unbelievable.
Frank leaves the tent.
EXT. ARMY CAMP - DAY
Frank goes back to Dion.
FRANK
A supply ship is coming in one day.
DION
Yeah. At the coast, where we found you.
FRANK
So, we get a ride to the Rig. They want to meet me anyway and there’s nothing here for the rest of you. I’m sure they could use you at the Rig.
DION
Look Frank, Unless Callahan or Hendricks gives the order, I’m staying here.
FRANK
Dion, Hendricks and Callahan aren’t in the right mindset. We can’t stay here.
DION
These soldiers, my friends. They would have done the same. I’m sorry Frank, but I'm staying.
Frank leaves and heads into the woods. He comes across the lake where Ava is sitting.
FRANK
How are you?
AVA
Fine.
FRANK
You sure? Just a few hours ago you killed your own sister who you've been trying to find for months.
AVA
Yeah.
FRANK
There's a supply ship that’s coming in one day. I need you to talk to Hendricks. Get him to convince Callahan to leave. To go to the Rig.
Ava doesn’t say anything.
FRANK
Ava?
AVA
For fucks sake Frank look around you. This world is fucked up.
There comes a point where you realize that there’s no point in going on. You’ve yet to learn that.
Frank leaves and goes to the remains of his tent. He begins packing his bag with supplies. Hendricks appears behind him.
HENDRICKS
Going somewhere?
FRANK
I’m going to the supply ship.
HENDRICKS
Going to the Rig, eh?
FRANK
Yes.
HENDRICKS
Why?
FRANK
Because it’s safe there.
HENDRICKS
Maybe. We thought this camp was safe and look what happened.
Frank stands up.
FRANK
You all need to come with me.
Hendricks doesn’t say anything.
FRANK
Damn it. You know that we can’t stay here. If we do, we will die. I know that you and everyone else think this world is horrific. It is. But that doesn’t mean we have to die.
Hendricks doesn’t say anything. Frank goes back to packing. Hendricks leaves, walks through the woods and approaches the lake where Ava is still sitting. He joins her.
HENDRICKS
I buried them all. Also your sister. I put some flowers on her. It’s funny. This world is so ugly yet something so beautiful can still grow. Frank wants us to go to the Rig. I agree with him. There’s nothing left for us here.
Ava stands up and Hendricks follows.
AVA
I want to see Caley first.
HENDRICKS
Of course.
Ava and Hendricks go to the burial ground. Caley’s grave has flowers on it. Ava begins to break down and cry. Hendricks embraces her.
Frank is still packing. He is looking for a flashlight. Dion hands him one. Dion is carrying a backpack.
DION
Hendricks says we leave in an hour.
Frank and Dion smile at each other.
Far away but closing, is a large horde of zombies.
The group consisting of Frank, Ava, Hendricks, Dion, and Callahan take one last look at the camp.
The group walks away.
The group walks through the woods and along abandoned empty roads. Occasionally, they shoot a lone zombie or stop for a break.
EXT. FOREST - NIGHT
The group stops for the night and build a fire.
CALLAHAN
The ship will be here tomorrow afternoon. For now, we should rest.
Ava, Dion, and Hendricks go to sleep. Frank sits across from Callahan.
CALLAHAN
You know, people think that there is going to be an end to this. That we’ll find a cure, distribute it, and then go back to our normal way of life. It’s ridiculous.
FRANK
And why is that?
CALLAHAN
Civilization died in months. We’ve started killing each other. This is a new world. One of death and survival.
FRANK
When I was on the ISS, everyday was about survival. It may not have looked like it but is was. Making sure everything was working. Making sure we weren’t losing our minds. We never did. Even though everyday we were at risk of being sucked into the dark vacuum of the heavens. It was especially hard when we lost contact with Earth. But we stayed strong. Retained our humanity. You may believe that this is the end but I can’t. I have to have hope for us as a species. That we will kill the zombies, find a cure for the virus, and rebuild everything that we’ve lost. Hope is how we’re going to survive.
Frank lays down and goes to sleep.
THE NEXT DAY
EXT. DOCKS - DAY
The group arrives at the docks. There is no ship.
DION
What the fuck?
Hendricks pulls out a walkie.
HENDRICKS
Topeka this is Camp 3. Where are you? We need evac.
Hendricks repeats the call. Ava sees a body floating ashore. She walks toward it. The body is in a Navy uniform. Ava looks towards the open ocean. More bodies appear floating towards shore.
AVA
Guys!
The group runs over to Ava.
AVA
I don’t think that supply ship is coming.
FRANK
Damn it.
DION
We can use one of the boats at the dock.
HENDRICKS
Let’s go.
The large horde appears from the woods and enters the coastline.
DION
Shit!
HENDRICKS
Run!
The group runs to the docks.
They reach the dock and jump into a large boat. Frank, Ava, and Callahan shoot at the horde and take out a few zombies. One of the zombies runs ahead and jumps into the boat tackling Frank. Ava shoots the zombie in the head. Hendricks and Dion try looking for the key.
The horde grows closer.
FRANK
Guys!
HENDRICKS
We can't find the fucking keys!
A zombie jumps onto the front of the boat. Dion pulls out a handgun and shoots it in the head.
The group continues shooting the horde which grows larger as more zombies emerge from the woods.
AVA
Hendricks!
Hendricks rummages through the boat.
Callahan pulls out a bag full of grenades. He hands a grenade to Frank and Ava.
CALLAHAN
Pull the pin and throw!
Frank, Ava, and Callahan pull the pins of their grenades and throw them. The explosions take out a chunk of the horde.
CALLAHAN
Again!
They do the same thing. Another chunk of the horde is killed by the grenade blasts. More zombies emerge from the woods. A zombie appears at the side of the boat and grabs Callahan's arm. The zombie bites his arm. Callahan yells in pain. Frank shoots the zombie in the head. Callahan sits down. His bite wound is bleeding.
FRANK
It's gonna be ok. We'll get you to the Rig.
Callahan shakes his head.
CALLAHAN
I'm a dead man.
FRANK
No.
Callahan stands up and grabs the bag of grenades.
FRANK
What’re you doing?
CALLAHAN
Giving you a chance at hope and survival.
Callahan jumps off the boat and heads towards the horde. He pulls the pin on one of the grenades. He starts running at the horde. He reaches the horde and the grenades go off killing a large portion of the horde and Callahan.
Dion finds the boat keys and starts the boat. The boat drives away.
Time passes. The group sits in silence. Hendricks pours everyone a glass of whiskey including a glass for Callahan.
HENDRICKS
To Callahan.
FRANK & AVA & DION
To Callahan.
The group drinks. Hendricks pours Callahan’s glass overboard.
The group continues to sit in silence. Suddenly, the whir of a helicopter’s blade grows louder. A blackhawk helicopter appears over the boat.
END.
