Press Your Luck: Last week, Press Your Luck returned for another run of episodes, shifting to 9 PM after airing at 8 PM last summer. It was instantly an improvement on last summer's dud Lucky 13 (though, since that show managed to start decently enough before crumbling, it was only up 3% from its premiere), and was only down a few hundredths from its own performance in a time slot that was arguably much better. Press Your Luck has never been any sort of a major ratings hit, but it has always done solid business for ABC. They clearly value its performance, and have even brought it onto their fall schedule multiple times when various hardships (namely COVID and the WGA/SAG strikes) kept them from running their typical fall lineups. It's had some rough datapoints over the years, but for the most part, it gets the job done and keeps ABC looking solid enough in its hour. I expect that to continue this season, as it pairs up with Celebrity Family Feud. Retention on premiere night was somewhat underwhelming, but 8 PM is a much better time slot for game show, so I'm not all that worried at this point. My one and only reservation about predicting a renewal for Press Your Luck is that its current run of episodes was filmed as part of season 6 back in 2024, meaning it's been over a year since it last filmed. This doesn't doom it, as other ABC game shows have survived similar situations, but we have seem some solid performers on ABC disappear without explanation, even though ratings warranted renewals. Having to bring the show back into production over a year later may be just the motivation ABC needs to let it go, as they seem to always be looking for ways to scale back their summer programming. I expect another renewal, but I'll exercise a bit of caution and start it at LIKELY RENEWAL.

Big Brother: Each year, CBS takes summer arguably the least serious of any network. In fact, this year they have just two series, one of which was an essential burnoff of the remaining episodes of a show from the regular season. The other is Big Brother. And when you've got Big Brother, you're pretty much set. We don't have ratings for Sunday's show yet, but its premiere on Thursday was a big success, up half a tenth from its 2024 premiere (and up a full tenth from its first Thursday episode of that season). Only five episodes rated higher in 2024 overall, so this is quite the impressive datapoint. Before its debut, the highest rating posted by a regularly-scheduled program this summer was a 0.48 from America's Got Talent. Big Brother beat that by over a full point, and looks to be in prime position to be the #1 summer show for the second year running. All this is just underlining the obvious here, that Big Brother is a CERTAIN RENEWAL. Even as CBS essentially waves the white flag on summer and begins acting like the entire season doesn't exist, it's impossible to imagine a CBS schedule without Big Brother on it.
