Black-ish: I never really expected Black-ish to be canceled, but I did in a previous article float the possibility of it being a shock cancelation as a result of limited space and a high rate of success among ABC's newer comedies. Now, any doubt of a Black-ish renewal can be put to rest, as its entering syndication was important to ABC Studios' profits, and was mentioned in the most recent Disney earnings conference call.

Speechless: It appears that the disastrous week 2 rating of 0.4 was a fluke, as Speechless remained at a 0.5 in its 4th episode this season, after taking a week off. This rating still certainly isn't pretty, but now I think that ABC (who will soon own the show) likely won't view it as a lost cause, and give it a renewal so that it could potentially be sold into syndication. This show is one of the hardest calls to make on ABC this season. When we look to the past, it doesn't make things any clearer. Despite absolutely terrible ratings, Til Death made it four seasons on FOX, and got a syndication deal. On the other hand, 8 Simple Rules was canceled after 3 seasons, with ABC thinking that they wouldn't be able to sell it into syndication (where they turned out to be wrong, and the show, even with a less than desirable number of episodes, ended up being syndicated). Most history falls on the Til Death side than the 8 Simple Rules one, making me think that ABC will give Speechless a renewal, but there is no way I will be sure about that.
