EXT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY

An eclectically hip coffee shop sits in the middle of downtown Hartford, the capital city of Connecticut.

Traffic is buzzing everywhere.

INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY

TERRI, 15, sits with her older sister, BRITTNEY, 19, in a coffee table at the coffee shop.

The counter is buzzing with the sound of grinding coffee beans.

Terri sips from her to-go cup, then sets it back down on the table.

Papers and textbooks are stacked on top of the table.

Terri hustles through what appears to be algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, Brittney is glaring through what appears to be a medical terminology textbook while highlighting.

TERRI
I definitely need a break after this.

BRITTNEY
Not a problem.
(beat)
Glad to help. You know we can talk here anytime after school.

Brittney takes a sip from her latte.

BRITTNEY (CONT’D)
You see, high school is one of the toughest ages to go through.

TERRI
(confusingly)
Don’t you think I know that?

Brittney lets out a chuckle.

BRITTNEY
You’re funny, Teresa.

Terri rolls her eyes. She then takes her pencil and what appears to be algebra homework and writes.

TERRI
(annoyed)
Don’t call me Teresa.

BRITTNEY
I am just messing with you. After all, you are my little sister.

Terri proceeds to take a sip of her latte.

Brittney looks down at her medical terminology textbook.

TERRI
Mmm...how vanilla-y.

Brittney looks up at Terri, taken aback.

BRITTNEY
Are you okay?

TERRI
(with reassurance)
Okay? Of course I’m okay. Why wouldn’t I be?

BRITTNEY
I am glad. Now, can you tell me what is going on for you at school?

Terri sighs. She eyes back at the algebra homework.

BRITTNEY (CONT’D)
(worriedly)
Come on. Please answer me.

Terri looks up at Brittney with a confused look.

She puts her pencil down. Then she takes a long breath.

TERRI
(hesitatingly)
So, there is a guy in my math class.

Brittney then looks at Terri.

BRITTNEY
A guy?

TERRI
Yes. A guy.

Brittney abruptly closes her medical terminology textbook.

BRITTNEY
What is his name, Teresa?

Terri glares at Brittney, with fury.

TERRI
Could you please stop calling me Teresa?

BRITTNEY
Okay, Terri. You don’t need to go all Alien vs. Predator.

Terri grunts and rolls her eyes as she attempts writing.

TERRI
You know I’ve seen that movie, right? Where Predators hunt and kill Aliens as rites for passage?

BRITTNEY
(with annoyance)
Oh Terri. Please tell me something about the guy.

Terri looks up at Brittney.

TERRI
He’s not just any guy, he’s a football player at the school who happens to be in my math class.

BRITTNEY
What’s his name?

TERRI
Corey.

Brittney’s eyes widen.

BRITTNEY
Corey? The Corey Bennett? Zoey’s little brother?

Terri then pauses. She looks down, takes a shallow breath, and looks back up at Brittney.

TERRI
That’s the one.

BRITTNEY
Oh wow. My little sister has a crush.

Terri looks at Brittney with a confused look.

BRITTNEY (CONT’D)
(with reassurance)
When you have a crush on someone, you just know.

The expression on Terri’s face changes.

She leaves the table and walks up to the counter to order a second cup of french vanilla latte with almond milk.

Brittney watches Terri from her seat.

She grabs her medical terminology textbook and places it inside her bookbag.

Terri then walks back to her place at the coffee table.

TERRI
(sighs)
How do you really know when there's a crush?

BRITTNEY
You see, when two people meet, sometimes a person can develop romantic feelings for the other.
(beat)
I don’t know what that is supposed to mean, but it happens. You are young and it has happened. It is time for you to face your fears and decide whether to talk to him.

TERRI
This may be a bad idea, sis.

Terri quickly gets up. She picks up her latte.

Then she sits back down as Brittney glares at her.

BRITTNEY
Aren’t you overdoing it on the coffee?

Terri then gulps after sipping from her cup of joe. She gives Brittney a sad look.

TERRI
Brittney, what do you mean?

BRITTNEY
I know how worked up you get with serious situations. You are having a tough time deciding on whether you should ask him out.

TERRI
That is not how it goes. A guy is supposed to ask a girl out.

Brittney chuckles while she gets up and carries her book bag by her shoulder.

BRITTNEY
You do realize it’s the 21st century, right?

TERRI
Mom and Dad had the purity conversation with both of us when you were a freshman in high school and I was in the fifth grade.

Brittney rolls her eyes. She glares at Terri.

BRITTNEY
(agitatedly)
So what? God is not going to be mad at us for taking the lead in asking guys to hang out.

Terri then takes her backpack and quickly puts her algebra textbook and homework in it.

TERRI
Okay, let’s just go. I’ll ask him out.

BRITTNEY
That’s the spirit!

Terri grabs her backpack.

Brittney and Terri walk out of the coffee shop.
