FADE IN:
EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD CUL-DE-SAC - EARLY EVENING
An affluent neighborhood cul-de-sac of nice houses sits in the suburbs of Hartford, Connecticut.
EXT. SMITH HOUSE - EARLY EVENING
Terri’s house sits in the middle of the cul-de-sac.
INT. TERRI’S ROOM - EARLY EVENING
This is where Terri and her friends gather.
TERRI, NATASHA, and KATIE sit in chairs laid out in the bedroom in a circle.
Terri’s desk is on the wall.
INSERT - TERRI’S DESK, with a computer on top.
TERRI
What are we supposed to do now?
KATIE
Beats me.
Natasha twiddles her fingers in anxious disposition.
NATASHA
I don’t know how we’re going to pull off a win for Terri.
(beat)
And against the Abigail McClellan?
TERRI
I’m sure it will be fine. Now, let’s get to work.
Terri then types on her computer.
All of a sudden, the lights go off.
Natasha and Katie stare at each other in sheer terror.
KATIE
What the hell just happened?
NATASHA
The power just went out.
TERRI
I can’t even work on my computer and this happens?
KATIE
Terri, everything is out in the house.
NATASHA
Don’t you think she knows, Katie?
Terri then turns to Natasha in the darkened room.
TERRI
Guys, why can’t we just think of something else? Like do it analog?
NATASHA
It’s a bad idea when you have technology that makes things easier.
KATIE
Wait, I have an idea. Why don’t we just walk out to the coffee shop?
TERRI
(angrily)
Outside of this neighborhood? We don’t even have permits or licenses.
NATASHA
(in agreement)
That’s beside the point.
Katie paces back and forth.
Terri stares into space.
Natasha attempts to check her phone.
NATASHA
Oh great.
TERRI
What is it?
NATASHA
At least the Internet decided it is not a great time to be on at the moment.
TERRI
I’m sure the coffee shop will have generators.
KATIE
(confusingly)
Seriously, Terri? You’re more concerned with the coffee shop over there than figuring out anything about power outages.
TERRI
Aren’t we supposed to figure that out until they teach us about circuits in detail?
NATASHA
Oh brother.
Natasha rolls her eyes.
Katie grabs her backpack.
Terri grabs her things from her desk as carefully as possible.
The girls leave the scene.
EXT. MAIN STREET - EARLY EVENING
We see the girls walking on the sidewalk.
TERRI
Surprisingly, the lights are on.
KATIE
I think the lights came back on.
NATASHA
Let’s just keep on walking to the coffee shop.
Katie nods in agreement.
INT. COFFEE SHOP - FIVE MINUTES LATER
Terri, Katie, and Natasha gather inside the coffee shop.
Katie is sipping on a latte.
Natasha is on her phone.
Terri scribbles away on her notebook as if to jot an idea.
TERRI
You know what? I think we need to think about other ways to campaign besides posters.
NATASHA
(groggily)
What? You’re kidding me, right?
KATIE
Posters are supposed to catch everyone’s attention.
TERRI
In the age of social media, you have to market yourself.
Katie turns to Natasha.
They both nod.
KATIE
Well.
