It's the final CW Renew/Cancel of 2022, and it's looking like a Blue Christmas for one CW freshman series.
The Winchesters: This Supernatural spinoff went into hiatus on a bum note this month, with just a 0.06 in the demo. While that single rating alone will not cause The CW to cancel the series, one of the only arguments The Winchesters really had to begin with was that it was one of the network's stronger same-day ratings performers. With it recently rating as a mediocre performer (at best - a repeat of Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer did 33% better just a few nights ago than the Winchesters midseason finale), it's getting harder to imagine a renewal for it. Something else putting Winchesters at a heavy disadvantage is that it's produced by Warner Bros - a company that, thanks to David Zaslav, has been cleaning house and may not be particularly incentivized to do anything to get The Winchesters renewed. The only reason I am so weary about predicting a cancellation for this show is that it is the spinoff of what was an extremely important show for The CW. If the new owners care about keeping something Supernatural-related on their lineup, and holding onto The CW of years gone by, it could still have a chance. That brand should also help be an assistance with selling into other markets, and should help its streaming performance, though plenty of other shows from established franchises were canceled by The CW in recent years. This is not the CW of years gone by, the CW that would renew anything that they picked up, and you truly need to be a standout to get by. I don't think The Winchesters is much of a standout, and so, it LEANS CANCELLATION.
All American: Homecoming: On the other hand, there is Homecoming, which is as much of a standout, ratings-wise, as any 9 PM CW show really can be in this day and age. It's the network's #2 series, and their top 9 PM show. That would all point to an obvious renewal for basically any other network, or in basically any other year on The CW. However, Homecoming does seem to be in clear danger as a WB show, and with it being early in its run, it seems highly unlikely that The CW would renew it for a final season, which could conceivably happen for its veteran parent series. Homecoming is putting up a good fight, and I do think it's more likely than not that it will be renewed, but its renewal will ultimately hinge on how many current shows the new leadership is intent on renewing. All American and Walker (a show from Paramount, which is more likely to make deals with The CW than Warner Bros is) both feel like more likely renewals, and Homecoming may end up falling victim to the sale if the network decides they only want to renew two shows. It only LEANS RENEWAL, despite clearly deserving a pickup.
