Home Economics: In spite of improved ratings this season, Home Economics failed to receive a backorder, and will end its third season run in January after only thirteen episodes. It's concerning that the show only had thirteen episodes for the season to begin with, seeing that it was heading into this third season and had twenty-two episodes in its second season. It almost seems that ABC only had it on the schedule to begin with because their only new comedy, Not Dead Yet, had to undergo major retooling and wouldn't have been ready in time to air in fall. If it was never the intention to give Home Economics more than thirteen episodes, then this may well be the end of the line. It did at least get on the schedule (The Wonder Years can't say there same), but if its performance wasn't enough to get ABC to give it more episodes, then I don't know if it'll be enough to get a renewal, either. All of this was known before, though, and I still thought it could be renewed. What's changed? The next two Wednesdays, the comedies are in repeat mode, with one exception: Home Economics, which isn't even airing a repeat. A double episode of Abbott will air in its place. It's seems minor, but it's a worrying sign for the future if ABC isn't even bothering to air repeats of it anymore. This, paired with the short season and the fact that, in spite of increased ratings, it's still ABC's #4 comedy (of four) adds up to one thing: I can no longer predict a renewal for it. It LEANS CANCELLATION.

Alaska Daily: Today, Alaska Daily star Hilary Swank scored a surprise Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the series. It paled in comparison to Abbott Elementary's haul (five nominations), but any recognition at the awards is a major win for broadcast. Will that have any impact on the show's renewal chances? It's hard to imagine. While networks love awards (the Golden Globe victory essentially saved Crazy Ex-Girlfriend during what was a very different era for The CW), they love shows that make them money even more, and it's hard to imagine this one makes them anything with ratings so abysmal. Nominations are always nice, but it's still a LIKELY CANCELLATION.

What do you think of my predictions? What are you predictions? Let me know in the comments and vote in the poll of the week! Thanks to all who read the column this year, I hope you will join me when the ABC Renew/Cancel in 2023.
