Summer Renew/Cancel Week 13: Tough As Nails Is In For A Tough Fight

This week on the ABC Renew/Cancel, I take a closer look at CBS's new show Tough As Nails. Keep reading to see if it's on the move.

Wednesday TV Ratings 7/29/20: Ultimate Tag Ends Higher, Tough As Nails Ties United We Fall in First, Agents of SHIELD Steady (UPDATED)

Note: Original broadcasts are highlighted in BLUE.

Preliminary Analysis: After a promising 1.3 debut after 'The Masked Singer' in late May, Fox's 'Ultimate Tag' (0.3) ended its ten-episode run in truly ghastly fashion. The competition series matched the ugly low-point it had posted the past two weeks and fell behind its 'MasterChef' repeat lead-in (0.4) once again. Although its steady stream of ratings in the 0.5-0.6 range was quite solid, this sour final impression definitely jeopardizes the program's chances of returning for a second season.

In more encouraging news, ABC's 'United We Fall' (0.5) held even in week three and tied for the night's top broadcast. Although chances of renewal are slim, 'Fall' seems to be doing quite well for the time being. But there was uglier news later in the night as 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.2) lost a tenth and fell back down to its rotten series low at 10pm. 'SHIELD' will air its two-hour series finale in two weeks on August 12th. Sandwiched in-between the two originals were repeats of 'The Goldbergs' (0.4), 'The Conners' (0.3), and 'American Housewife' (0.3).

CBS's 'Tough as Nails' (0.5) got a precious tenth back after two weeks of posting 0.4s. It led into encores of a 'Price Is Right' special (0.4) and 'SEAL Team' (0.3). NBC had 0.4s across the board for its 'One Chicago' repeat trio. And the CW's 'Bulletproof' (0.1) gained a tenth after last week's dreadful 0.0. It led out of a repeat of 'The 100' (0.1).

Finals Update: The season finale of Fox's 'Ultimate Tag' (+0.1) and 'Agents of SHIELD' (+0.1) adjusted up. This puts 'Ultimate Tag a tenth above its last episode and 'SHIELD' steady with its previous outing.

Wednesday TV Ratings 7/22/20: Game On! Ends Steady, United We Fall Stays on Top, Bulletproof Gets Invisible (UPDATED)

Note: Titles highlighted in BLUE are original broadcasts.

Preliminary Analysis: A week after its decent debut, ABC's 'United We Fall' (0.5) was down a tenth from its 8pm premiere but steady with its previous episode. By current bleak summer standards, this is ultimately a passable performance and 'Fall' was simultaneously the highest-rated program of the night. 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) closed out the alphabet network's night. Coulson and company were once more even week-to-week. In-between the originals were repeats of 'The Goldbergs' (0.4), 'The Conners' (0.4), and 'American Housewife' (0.3).

CBS's lineup remained anemic as 'Tough as Nails' (0.4) and 'Game On' (0.3) matched their awful performances from last week. A 10pm 'SEAL Team' repeat (0.3) matched the 'Game On' finale. NBC's 'One Chicago' lineup (0.4/0.4) was on-par with its usual delivery. Fox's 'Ultimate Tag' (0.3) remained feeble, once more falling behind its 'MasterChef' repeat lead-in (0.4). And The CW's 'Bulletproof' (0.0) lost a tenth, falling to that horrific 0.0 that has become increasingly more common for the netlet this summer. A repeat of 'The 100' (0.1) lead into it.

Finals update: Repeats of Chicago Med (-0.1) and MasterChef (-0.1) adjusted down.

Summer Renew/Cancel Week 11: United We Falter

At long last, a new scripted show has premiered this summer. Keep reading to find out United We Fall's initial placement, and which other show is on the move!

Wednesday TV Ratings 7/15/20: United We Fall Starts On Top, Game On! and Ultimate Tag Hit New Lows (UPDATED)

Note: Titles highlighted in BLUE are original broadcasts.

Preliminary Anaylsis: After weeks of comedy reruns and Disney films populating the Wednesday night roster, ABC decided to return to the scripted original game by broadcasting the 1-hour premiere of new sitcom 'United We Fall' (0.6/0.5). It was a respectable start by summer standards and 'Fall' also narrowly registered as the night's top program. Despite that, it has very little room to drop before it goes from solid to underwhelming. At 10, 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) held steady once more. In-between the two originals were repeats of 'The Conners' (0.4) and 'American Housewife' (0.3).

CBS's 'Tough as Nails' (0.5) lost a tenth in week 2 but the real slippage came with the return of 'Game On!' (0.3) in a new timeslot. Not only did 'Game On!' lose three-tenths and fall to a new series low but it also lost two-tenths from an already tepid lead-in. An even uglier 'SEAL Team' repeat (0.2) ended their evening. Similar to 'Game On!', Fox's 'Ultimate Tag' (0.3) crashed to a new low and lost to its 'MasterChef' repeat lead-in (0.4) for the first time. 'Tag' had posted five-straight 0.5s before this rotten data point. NBC had 0.4s across the board with a trio of 'One Chicago' encores. The CW's 'The 100' (0.2) and 'Bulletproof' (0.1) were frozen at last week's numbers.

FINALS UPDATE: 'Tough as Nails' (0.4, -0.1) adjusted down, now down two-tenths from last week's premiere.
