Lucky 13: Due to a late start and several preemptions, Lucky 13 had aired just four episodes at the time our last renew/cancel was posted, one of which was against the Olympics. Last week, though, we got two airings of the show, and both showcased its immense weakness. Its retention of Press Your Luck was fairly solid before this week, holding onto a respectable portion of a relatively mediocre lead-in. Press Your Luck gave it little to work with, but it did almost as well as you could expect. Last week, though, it shed one-third of its Press Your Luck lead-in, with just a 0.16. That came two days after a dreadful 0.14 being the Bachelorette. While the Bachelorette is a notoriously horrid lead-in, repeats that air behind it on Mondays tend to perform better than that. Lucky 13 is just not a strong show, and ABC's audience is pretty much rejecting it. I excused the 0.16 against the Olympics because Press Your Luck had a very poor showing that night as well, and casually-viewed game shows often crater against the Olympics. However, there's no justification for these past few ratings. Even summer shows that perform solidly haven't been guaranteed renewals on ABC the last few seasons, so I see no reason to expect an underperforming freshman will be reprieved. It LEANS CANCELLATION now, despite being given the benefit of the doubt in the past, and seems destined to join recent one-and-dones like The Parent Test, The Prank Panel and The Final Straw, all shows that seemed to have shots at renewal at first before fizzling out completely by season's end.
Claim to Fame: Last week, Claim to Fame wrapped an unspectacular season with a slight decline to a 0.22 average for its two-hour finale. This capped off its season with a 0.23 average, a bit below its premiere and a 24% drop from the year before. That caused me to see it as being on the bubble - able to really go either way, depending on ABC's needs for next summer's schedule. I still see it that way, but they did put out a casting call for a fourth season of the show. Those calls don't always guarantee a renewal in the end, but it's a good indication that hopes remain alive for another season, and producers and ABC are preparing for another renewal. Its performance is nothing to rave about, but it does well enough and fills a slot on the lineup, so it does make sense that they're considering a pickup at this stage. A cancellation still wouldn't be a shock, but the signs all seem pretty positive at this point, so it LEANS RENEWAL as it wraps for the year.
