Summer Renew/Cancel Wrap-Up: Final Calls for Lucky 13, The Quiz with Balls, Beat Shazam, Food Stars & More as the Sun Sets on Summer

The summer season truly seems to have sped by this season, with late starts by ABC helping to make this summer feel shorter than ever. It was also a summer that felt light on original programming, with CBS, ABC and NBC all offering less than usual, and even Fox cutting down on summer content from last season. Nonetheless, some shows remained, and you can read my final predictions for all of them below:

Celebrity Family Feud (ABC) (0.33, 0.25-0.41)
The Quiz with Balls (Fox) (0.25, 0.21-0.29)

Fate Determined:
MasterChef (Renewed)
Name That Tune (Renewed)

The 1% Club: This new game show entry started out on pretty solid footing, with ratings basically doubling those of its time slot's spring occupant, So You Think You Can Dance. However, this show's always been a weird case, in that this show is far more of an Amazon show than a Fox one, despite episodes airing on Fox before they air on Prime Video. Regardless of Fox's intention, Amazon holds the cards in regards to its renewal, though I'm assuming that its performance on Fox, and whether Fox intends to continue airing it, will have a say in whether or not it gets picked up again. Its early performance, and its seemingly low production cost, gave me reason to be fairly sure it'd be renewed. It was a top summer performer for Fox, and I figured they'd do what they could to keep it around, even with Amazon having the final say. Its late-season performances, however, do little to put it ahead of the other mediocre offerings on Fox's schedule, barely clinging to rounded 0.2s towards the end of the season. Again, there is a lot at play here beyond how it does on Fox, but if Amazon is taking how it does at Fox into consideration for renewal, those ugly ratings for the last few episodes probably aren't helping matters. I do still think it will be back, as it did pretty much fine for summer filler, but the interesting dynamics at play here make it hard to really be certain. It LEANS RENEWAL.

The Quiz with Balls: Here's a Fox game show I'm pretty certain will be back. A late-season resurgence by MasterChef will keep The Quiz with Balls from contending for #1 on Fox this summer, but they were still running neck-and-neck all summer, an impressive feat for a freshman series parked at 9 o'clock behind a show that's well past its prime. Of course, saying a show is Fox's #1 summer show feels as if I'm damning it with faint praise, but in a ratings landscape that's in sincere decline, this show did pretty well, and kept Fox pretty competitive on Tuesdays, often keeping them in second in the time slot behind America's Got Talent. This show is likely no more expensive to produce than the average game show on Fox, and it's performing better than pretty much all of them this season, with only in-season game shows The Floor and Snake Oil (which had a big Masked Singer lead-in to boost it) out-rating it. It's hard to imagine anything keeping Fox from bringing this one back, so it earns an upgrade to CERTAIN RENEWAL to cap off the season.

Lucky 13: After starting its season on pretty solid ground, retaining Press Your Luck well, Lucky 13 has faced declining odds pretty much ever since. It had an ugly showing opposite the Olympics, only three episodes into its run, but then it rebounded the week after. After that, however, it's been in freewill. Its inconsistent scheduling has seen it take a break after just one episode aired, then take another week off after its second episode aired and another after its fourth aired, just to air an episode in an irregular time slot so it could air twice in a week. It aired the last two weeks without Press Your Luck, and will air two episodes this week to cap off its season. While its late premiere didn't help matters any, this haphazard scheduling doesn't make the show look like a priority for ABC. Its ratings fell off a cliff after episode four, with that post-Bachelorette 0.14 setting a new low. It rose a bit on Thursday, but still looked terrible, and hasn't crossed the 0.20 mark since. With ABC seemingly scaling back summer programming, I see very little reason for them to bring this one back, as everything else that they've aired this summer, with the possible exception of Judge Steve Harvey, is capable of performing a marked degree better. It's a LIKELY CANCELLATION.
