Everyone is hanging out inside the newly-built indoor bullpen. It includes TVs so they can watch the Primitives play even as they are inside.
VICTOR
You know, as cool as it is to get to watch the game from an air conditioned space…is there anything else on TV?
ACE
Yeah the coverage kinda sucks, where are all the funny commercials?
LORENZO
I’m sure this TV gets other stations, don’t worry guys…
FELIX
Seriously?! It’s a nice day outside, go sit there and enjoy it.
LORENZO
But I want to watch TV.
DAVE
This is supposed to be the place for us good pitchers to use so we can warm up. Remember? The TVs are here so we can still see what’s going on in the game even as we get ready to pitch.
LORENZO
See that’s where you’re wrong. This season, everyone’s a good pitcher!
DAVE
Nah, me, Felix, and Carter are good pitchers. Everyone else should enjoy their borrowed time.
LORENZO
Look, I know it might seem like the team’s gonna cut some people, but don’t worry, everything will work out.
BRYAN
You promise? My kid’s getting older and learning to talk back. Not a pleasant situation. I need this gig to get away from all that.
LORENZO
Not to worry, you’ll go into the game today and prove to management that you’ve got what it takes to help the Primates win a game.
HARRY
I’m past the point where I should care about correcting you but…again, Primitives.
ACE
So it’s decided, Bryan will pitch. Now what else does this TV have?
MANNY
Isn’t there a big game on now on the national network?
CARTER
You’re right! Actually I kinda want to watch that.
FELIX
Carter!
CARTER
Sorry guys, they’re right. This game’s boring. We’ll return to it later.
LORENZO grabs the remote and changes the station to another baseball game.
MANNY
That’s more like it.
DEVIN
I don’t know, still looks pretty boring to me.
MANNY
Yeah but these announcers…man do they got chemistry.
DEVIN
Like the science?
MANNY
No, like..chemistry. They work well together. You’ve never heard that?
DEVIN
I mean I guess. Really should be a different word for that.
MANNY
Whatever, just listen to the announcers. Unbiased, just the way I like it.
ROBERT
I don’t get the appeal. Local announcers can say whatever they want and can be shameless about rooting for the home team.
DAVE
That’s it, I don’t want to watch two other teams play! Turn it back to our game or I’m going outside.
HARRY
I don’t think that’s gonna give them a reason to change it back.
DAVE storms off.
FELIX
He has a point. We really should be watching our game. Come on, Carter. They may need us soon.
CARTER stands up and follows FELIX out of the indoor bullpen.
ACE
Well that’s ironic! Now it’s just us scrubs in the indoor bullpen built for the good pitchers.
BRIAN
I was only in here because they were in here. You know, to look like a good pitcher.
HARRY
And how do you look like a good pitcher?
BRIAN
I don’t know, I figure at least it looked like I was putting in the effort.
VICTOR
Lorenzo, what should we do? Practice our pitching or join our good pitchers outside?
LORENZO
Practice your pitching, of course! It’s the only way to get better.
VICTOR stands up.
VICTOR
Someone catch for me.
Nobody moves.
HARRY
Fine I’ll do it.
VICTOR picks up a baseball and throws it to HARRY from the practice mound. The pitch is high, flying past HARRY and cracking a TV screen.
MANNY
Thanks a lot Victor, now I can’t watch the game. On that TV, at least.
VICTOR
We’re gonna get in so much trouble. They just built this place!
LORENZO
Not if we leave and deny it ever happened.
ROBERT
I’m with Lorenzo, this place is boring anyways. Let’s see what the others are up to.
Everyone walks to the outdoor bullpen area.
ACE
Hey there’s actually a ball in here.
FELIX
Yeah, Dave just gave up a home run. We lost the game. He’s on his way back to the bullpen now. I’d advise you all so-called players to leave before you have to interact with that.
LORENZO
Oh, we will. And maybe we can blame him on the broken TV screen too!
FELIX
The what?
LORENZO
Nothing.
FELIX
Anyways you can’t leave, you’re the coach.
LORENZO leaves, with everyone else following him. DAVE walks back to the indoor bullpen, sees a broken TV screen, shrugs, and throws a ball at it in frustration.
