Not Dead Yet: ABC's only new comedy of the season debuted last week, to ratings that seem easily renewable... if they hold. With a 0.44 at 8:30 and a 0.37 at 9:30, Not Dead Yet notably out-rated the averages of both regular time slot occupants from those slots, The Goldbergs and Home Economics. There are a few things, though, that cause me to make this renewal prediction with extreme hesitancy. First, the show fell seven hundredths (or 16%) within the span of an hour, despite the 9:30 episode having a slightly stronger lead-in. Second, the 0.37 at 9:30 is only a single hundredth above the finale of Home Economics three weeks prior. It's a number that looks renewable at first glance, but it remains to be seen whether it will actually hold up well enough for that renewal to be justified. So while the premiere was far from a bust, I'm not sure what sort of longevity we can expect from it. It LEANS RENEWAL out of the starting gate, as I will give it the benefit of the doubt after a stronger debut than I'd expected, but it still faces an upward climb.

Home Economics: The show that had the most to gain or lose based on the performance of Not Dead Yet is likely Home Economics. If Not Dead Yet was an undeniable hit, Home Economics would have been in some real trouble. If it had heavily bombed, Home Economics' renewal argument would have been significantly bolstered. With Not Dead Yet having a perfectly average debut, Home Economics doesn't look to be in any different shape now than it was before. I do think that, as of now, it is more likely to be renewed than Not Dead Yet, but the coming weeks should clarify things more. It continues to LEAN RENEWAL.
