EXT. BLACK - NIGHT

Previously on The Book of Terri…

INT. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE - DAY

Principal Coleman sits in his desk. He sighs.

MR. COLEMAN
Another day in the office.

The phone rings.

He answers, and then his eyebrows lower.

Fury rises from his face as he hangs up the phone.

MR. COLEMAN (CONT’D)
You have got to be kidding me! Janice!

The door opens to reveal Janice.

Janice crosses her arms.

JANICE
What is it, Vance? Something happen?

MR. COLEMAN
This upcoming article that the journalism staff is pulling about the investigation into the missing money from the SBDM budget needs to be put on hold. Or changed.

JANICE
I don’t know what to say, but I will notify Mrs. Lanyer.

Janice leaves the room and the door closes.

BACK TO PRESENT DAY.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY

Terri walks in the hallway, dejected.

Yvette follows close behind.

Katie and Natasha are towards each other as they walk side by side.

KATIE
I cannot believe this is happening.

NATASHA
You said it.

Cassidy and Abigail stand near their lockers.

They look in the distance at Terri with her head down, Yvette somewhat calm and collected but tense, and Katie and Natasha chatting.

Cassidy turns to Abigail.

CASSIDY
Quite a firestorm this has caused. Coleman is a moron.

ABIGAIL
Now, I can’t discuss all the details of what is happening. I’m in trouble too.

CASSIDY
For what? You had no idea of the ballot stuffing and the money laundering that is going on.

Abigail looks down in a bout of sadness.

ABIGAIL
There’s a coverup. I know it. I just hope the controversy with the paper is resolved. Terri has every right to know.

Cassidy puts her arm around Abigail to comfort her.

CASSIDY
None of this was your fault, Abigail. Neither was it Terri’s. I know we both had issues in the past with Terri, but with something like this, we have to band together.

ABIGAIL
You’re right on that. Now, let’s get to the student council meeting. It’s a public hearing this afternoon and students are invited.

Cassidy nods.

SUPER: AFTERNOON

INT. CAFETERIA - AFTERNOON

Students are gathered in the cafeteria.

The podium sits at the front of the cafeteria.

In Terri’s table, Katie, Natasha, Terri, Mary Anne, and Lexie sit together.

Terri sighs.

Natasha and Katie both have notepads in hand. They are in front of the table.

Lexie and Mary Anne turn towards each other in confusion.

TERRI
This is going to be a long one.

NATASHA
You said it.

Back at the podium, Yvette stands up. She tests the microphone with a tap.

The room falls silent.

YVETTE
Well, this is a shock. I would like to begin with a discussion on free speech.

In Abigail’s table, Cassidy and Abigail turn towards each other.

CASSIDY
(quietly)
This better be good.

Back at the podium, Yvette continues on.

At Terri’s table, Terri sighs.

YVETTE
Free speech has been a cornerstone of the American republic. It’s been a huge part of West Hartford. As you heard, an upcoming story in the Tiger Print has been rejected for publication.

A student (STUDENT #1) gets up from across the room.

STUDENT #1
This is unfair! F*** Coleman!

The audience cheers.

Yvette taps on the microphone.

YVETTE
Life is unfair. And please watch your language. We’re still in a school.

The audience erupts. Picture Supa Hot Fire’s rap battle with the audience’s reaction.

Terri glares over at the random student.

Terri’s focus resumes on Yvette.

Yvette taps the microphone again. This time, she taps it sternly.

YVETTE
Settle down, everyone. This is not a freestyle comedy rap battle. As I was saying, we at West Hartford High must fight back. We as students deserve the right to know what is going on with school leadership.

Suddenly, the principal shows up.

MR. COLEMAN
Actually, whatever is going on with school leadership is a private matter.

Terri gets up.

TERRI
Look, Principal Coleman. We are students. We overhear what goes on when it comes to student budgets. Don’t we have a right to know?

MR. COLEMAN
Miss Smith, I’m surprised. A bright student like you should be more concerned with upholding the student conduct code.

YVETTE
What does that supposed to mean? If it means going out of your way to keep us in the dark, it’s not going to work. We will fight.

MR. COLEMAN
Then I’m suspending you for insubordination.

The audience boos.

In next week’s penultimate episode, things come to blows. Find out the aftermath on The Book of Terri!
