MasterChef: After a disappointing premiere that came in 40% below its previous premiere, MasterChef has grown in the weeks since. With a 0.23 average, it's Fox's top summer series. While that might not sound like a huge accomplishment, it's pulled in solid ratings by summer standards, recently hitting a 0.28 in the key demo. Yes, that is a bit down from last season, when it averaged 0.26 and hit a 0.33 at its best point, but it's certainly not the precipitous decline that its premiere rating was suggesting. MasterChef was always likely to survive even the worst of ratings woes, just based off of Fox's relationship with Gordon Ramsay. It's one of his two signature Fox staples (the other being Hell's Kitchen, which averaged just a few hundredths higher than MasterChef in fall and winter), and it would've needed a total ratings meltdown to be at serious cancellation risk (rating at least as bad, if not worse, than last season's Food Stars). That worrisome debut rating is in the past now, and it's looking no weaker now than it did last season. Short of Ramsay himself deciding to hang up his apron, MasterChef looks guaranteed to assume a spot on the Fox summer schedule for years to come - it's certainly doing well enough to have earned that much. With ratings woes seemingly in the past, and a better week-to-week trend in the early episodes than it had last season, it's upgraded to a CERTAIN RENEWAL.
Gordon Ramsay's Secret Service: Despite an encouraging premiere rating that saw it grow from its established lead-in, I was weary to go too confident in this new series just out of the starting gate. After all, we've seen Ramsay series start decently and look shaky as the season went on. This show, however, looks like a solid addition to the summer roster. Though it's no longer growing from MasterChef, its retention is very solid, typically losing only a few hundredths from it. It's the #2 series on Fox this summer, and has helped keep Wednesday a very solid night for Fox, the only consistently-strong lineup they have these days. Considering their ratings these days, even a solid performer like this is very welcome on Fox. Many of their shows can barely manage a rounded 0.2, and Secret Service has never gone lower than 0.19. That's better than Food Stars could've said last season, and ratings were a bit higher in 2024 than they are now. All Fox can ask for is a show that performs solidly and holds onto its lead-in. Secret Service is giving them just that, delivering summer ratings that would even look renewable in the regular season. It's also doing better on Hulu than any of their other summer shows, typically ranking in the top five on there, never leaving the chart since its debut. Its stability thus far has been impressive, and I expect it to remain a reliable 0.2 performer for the rest of its run. It's a LIKELY RENEWAL, and another upgrade down the line seems pretty likely, too.
