Get Shorty S1E5 Review

Of all the cameos they could have made, they brought in a kid from 'The Thundermans'?

S1E5 'A Man of Letters'

In this episode, Miles' family comes to LA, Rick meets with his son in rehab to get close to an actor they want for the movie, Louis meets with the new writer of The Admiral's mistress and Amara's local gang war comes to an end.

Once again, Louis is the highlight of the episode. At some point, I know I'm gonna end up writing a letter of admiration dedicated to him. I was kinda hoping Yago would die in this episode. The part where he had dinner with Amara convinced me that he was gonna get screwed by her but ultimately that was not the case. It was good to see Emma finally get some focus and we got to see Miles be tough dad for her. The one thing that I found weird was that Miles and Katie became closer. I like them together but Katie's boyfriend needs to be properly handled before they get back together.

Rick using his son felt kinda disgusting but then again I watch Better Call Saul so this level of sleaziness didn't really faze me. In a way, Rick is similar to Saul. They're both played by great comedians, both the characters have family issues and both of them have a bad@ss friend.

[Disclaimer: I have nothing against 'The Thundermans'. I just found it surprising since 'Get Shorty' and 'The Thundermans' don't share the same audience]

Throughout the episode, April seemed really passive aggressive towards Miles and Rick. Now why would she act like that, I wonder.

S1E4 - 'From Stamos With Love'

In this episode, Miles deals with his rising status and his wife, Rick pulls a stunt from the original 'Get Shorty' film and Amara decides to get back at Miles after he tries to push her out of the movie.

I can't say the show has improved much but I will say that the quality has been retained from the last episode so that's good. Once again, the best part of the episode involved Louis as he meets up with the movie's original writer's girlfriend. Maybe it might be because he also played Johnny on Deadwood, but Louis is now officially my favourite character. I still could not care less about Yago. If he doesn't die by the end of the season, I will be miffed. I was pleasantly surprised to see Peter Stormare show up. I've only seen him on Fargo and The Blacklist but he's done well in all the stuff I've seen him in.

You would think that with Rick being the moral compass, he would do something about Miles and his illegal activities.

But you would be wrong.

S1E3 - 'The Yips'

In this episode, Miles tries to get studio executive April Quinn to fund the movie despite Rick's disapproval while Amara gets involved in a gang war in her town.

This episode felt a bit better than the last, and I finally got a taste of what I wanted from this show. Some good old fashioned Hollywood politics. I'm glad that they put some focus on supporting characters like Amara and Katie's boyfriend. I still could not care less about Amara's nephew Yago though. I get that he's meant to be unlikeable but he is so unoriginal. Kudos to Megan Stevenson for her performance of April Quinn. Her facial expressions were hilarious. My favourite part of this episode was when Louis breaks into April's house to find some blackmail on her (literally).

I am amazed by the fact that no matter how bad a movie is, there's always someone willing to watch it

S1E2 - 'Sins of a chambermaid.'

In this episode, Miles manages to get Rick Morewether on board after he tells him he has found a producer and sets a meeting between Rick and Amara. However Miles starts doubting Rick after watching one of Rick's movies.

This episode was pretty dull in comparison to the first. It was pretty slow and I felt like they shouldn't have focused too much on the mob storyline. But there were some positives in this episode such as Miles' reluctant partner Lulu and the set up of Rick's past. The ending felt kinda lame though, as Rick suddenly changes his mind about the plan. I get why Rick did it, but I just think it's leading to some unnecessary issues.

In this golden age of television, one network arose to provide us with the best entertainment the world has seen. This network endured much hardship to ensure their greatness and in doing so has received the adoration of the masses.

Sadly, this show is not part of that network.

The show follows Miles Daly, a disgruntled underling of mob boss Amara who is trying to fix his marriage. When Miles goes to LA to "take care" of a writer, he finds a script among the writer's belongings and decides to make it into a movie.

I know my opening quote might be in bad taste but I must commend Epix for their push towards original programming. While I doubt this show will put them on the map, I found it was enjoyable. I really like the cast especially Chris O'Dowd and Ray Romano. They were what drew me in and they're the main reason I'm reviewing this show. My main problem with this episode was that even though it was meant as a setup, it was very long. But I hope this improves as the show moves forward
