Lingo: When it was announced that CBS was airing this RuPaul-hosted game show on Fridays at 8 this summer, it seemed like a pretty clear turn-off. After all, they've never seemed to be big fans of it, and its modest ratings in season one made it a pretty questionable renewal to begin with. That renewal was so questionable that CBS yanked it from the schedule during its first season. Since returning this summer, ratings have been predictably poor. During the Olympics, the show sunk as low as 0.13, making it one of the lowest-rated shows CBS has ever aired. Its current season average is a hundredth below last summer's CBS bomb, Superfan, which was canceled without fanfare after its six-episode season. It isn't only the ratings, though, that paint a gloomy picture for this show's future. Last week's episode of the show was pushed to next week with minimal notice so CBS could air a repeat of the Billy Joel concert that they originally aired this spring. This came after CBS already demoted the show from 8 PM to 9 PM in favor of Let's Make a Deal Primetime specials. Lingo is a clear afterthought for CBS, a show that is doing nothing more than filling space, and sometimes it's not even given the chance to do that. It has pretty much no argument for a renewal, and consistently trails NBC and ABC's repeats in its slot, so it's hard to blame CBS for not caring much about it. It's a CERTAIN CANCELLATION.
The Real CSI: Miami: Here's one show that CBS surprisingly seems to care a bit more about than I'd originally thought. I initially saw this show as nothing more than schedule filler, and its ratings were so paltry than I really doubted that CBS would ever care to renew it. Its ratings are still just as weak, but CBS seems to have taken somewhat of a liking to it, seeing as they have been airing repeats of it at 10 on Thursdays, and are scheduled to continue airing repeats of it on Wednesdays even after its finale airs next week. CBS has been known to air repeats of shows that they cancel - repeats of NCIS: Hawai'i remains on their schedule to this day despite its cancellation, and a repeat of So Help Me Todd aired on a Saturday just weeks before it was axed - but this still indicates to me that CBS isn't fully done with the show, and has to be at least considering keeping the show going. Considering how cheap it has to be to produce the show, it may be a financially sensible option for CBS to air over the summer, similar to 48 Hours: NCIS, which ran for three summer seasons in the late 2010s. I still think it's more likely it disappears without notice than makes its way back on the schedule, but it has a fighting chance. It LEANS CANCELLATION.
Claim to Fame: I was conflicted on this one when it first premiered, and I'm still conflicted now. Its ratings this season have not been great, with 0.2s for the last four episodes and hitting a new low three weeks in a row. However, this show has never been all that strong of a performer, averaging 0.36 in its first season, 0.31 in its second, and now 0.24 this time. That's not a terrible decline, and it's relatively in-line with most other summer shows. I suspect the ratings will eventually be too low for them to justify keeping it on the air, especially as ABC has cut summer content in recent years - including higher-rated shows like Generation Gap. Its renewal chances will hinge on how it performs on Disney-owned Hulu, as a show of its nature probably enjoys a higher streaming boost than the litany of casually-viewed game shows that ABC blasts all over the airwaves in the summer. I tend to give veteran shows the benefit of the doubt, especially summer shows, as expectations for summer programming is so low, though the lack of buzz for this season and weaker ratings does give me more concern about its chances than I had at the start of the season. It LEANS RENEWAL, but I wouldn't be shocked by any decision ABC makes on this one.
