Downward Dog- Downward Dog is an interesting case. Behind Modern Family, it started with an underwhelming 1.1. In week 2, it moved to its actual time slot of Tuesdays at 8. It aired in front of the Dancing With the Stars finale, and it held up remarkably well with a 1.0. That caused me to rethink my original assessment and categorization of the series. In its third week, against the absolute monster that is America's Got Talent, the newbie floundered, as I'd speculated could happen in my latest post. This just reassures my initial thoughts about the show. I'll leave it as "Leans Cancellation" for now, but if it goes lower, it's probably getting a downgrade.
The Carmichael Show-In its first week, the Carmichael Show returned to a 0.9. In its second half hour, it was down two tenths to a 0.7. While that's not exactly a hit, it's pretty decent for an NBC comedy, especially considering that it's lead-in was a 1.1 and it's a Summer show. For comparison, Great News ended its season with a 0.7/0.8. Trial & Error ended with a 0.9/0.7, and Superstore went out with a 0.8. All were renewed. Great News even received the potentially lucrative post-Will & Grace slot. Off NBC's returning comedies, only The Good Place ended with more than Carmichael's 0.9/0.8. So as you can see, NBC doesn't exactly have high comedy standards. A 0.9 is good for them, and they'll take it. Plus, they love the show and STILL gave Carmichael a decent slot despite the 0.4 for its season 2 finale. I don't expect Jerrod Carmichael and company to go anywhere anytime soon, so this sitcom LEANS RENEWAL. My only reservation is the fact that Carmichael will lose the Little Big Shots lead-in in a few weeks and its new lead-in could fail. If Carmichael goes down with it, it may enter the cancel zone.
