Jane the Virgin Season 3 Finale Review

A wedding is coming our way in the season finale of Jane the Virgin.

S3E20 "Chapter Sixty-Four"

Jane gets ordained, so she can marry Xo and Rogelio. Xo puts pressure on Jane, wanting her to say something very personal at the wedding. She goes to see the priest, who helps her with this, and also reveals that Michael did follow through with the writing assignment he gave the two of them before their wedding.

A big twist comes when Darci shows up, and reveals to Jane that she is pregnant, and Rogelio is the father. He quickly goes to Xo when he finds out, who of course struggles with this. They call of the wedding, but after a comment from Darci, Xo realizes she does still want to get married, and all they need is their family.

Jane attempts to get to the wedding at the Marbella, which proves to be challenging during the hurricane. After a tree falls on Rafael's car, the two of them take the bus. It is a wonderfully sweet moment when Jane sees her book title listed on a poster in the bus, and funny when Rafael asks the driver to get closer to the Marbella.

Alba talks to Xo before the wedding, and it's a great scene, where Alba yells so Xo won't cry and ruin her makeup. Jane uses what she learned from seeing her name on the bus, and shares that Xo and Rogelio were not meant to be, but they chose each other despite every twist that came their way. This theme of commitment is touching and deep.

Petra breaks up with Rafael because she thinks he has feelings for Jane. The potential Jane and Rafael relationship is thrown out there then again, and I really think it's unnecessary at this point. The letter from Michael is found, and it's really sweet. At the end of the episode, Jane runs into her first love, which is an interesting way to end the episode, but doesn't really feel like a season-ender.

Luisa discovers that Rafael's cancer didn't actually come back, and when she confronts him about this, he lashes out at her for her relationship with Rose. Luisa ends up getting into a cab with Anezka, which causes some problems. Anezka finds out the truth about what happened the night that Scott died, and Luisa takes over the Marbella.

The twists involving the sisters was great, and the fact that Rogelio is going to be a father should be interesting. The wedding was great as well. The episode's only real problem was the love triangle with Rafael.

Score: 9.5/10

I will not be continuing to review Jane the Virgin in season 4, because I am cutting down on the shows I will review. However, I will continue to watch the show, so you can always discuss it with me in the comments.

Jane the Virgin S3E19 Review

It's one week until the season finale, and this week involves wedding planning.

S3E19 "Chapter Sixty-Three"

Jane finds out about Rogelio and Xo's plans for a fairytale wedding, which Jane is not very excited about. Jane asks her to be her maid of honor, and Jane's reaction when she finds out she has to wear a tiara is funny. The scene where wedding planners (who "never agree") come over and say that Xo is too old for a fairytale wedding is hilarious. After they quit, Jane decides to plan the wedding.

Jane plans to break up with Fabian, but ends up waiting when she finds out that he can help her with the wedding. However, Rogelio accidentally tells Fabian that Jane planned to break up with him, and Fabian sabotages things, which is not the kind of thing I would expect out of Fabian. Jane goes to set, where Fabian calls Jane a slut. This leads to a fight between Rogelio and Fabian, though Jane comes close to stopping it.

The shenanigans on set lead to Rogelio having to work late, so instead of having the bachelor and bachelorette party, Jane and Xo hang out. Their relationship is showcased wonderfully here, and I really love it. At the end of the episode, Xo and Rafael ask Jane to officiate their wedding, which I am excited about.

Petra is unsure of what to do after finding out about Rafael's feelings for her. Rafael tries to get Jane to talk to Petra, and then Petra tries to get Jane's opinion. Jane doesn't want to give her opinion, but it's funny when she goes on and on to Alba about her opinion.

Petra tells Rafael that they shouldn't get back together, and Rafael gets mad at Jane about this. Rafael getting mad at Jane here makes no sense, it's very out of character for him. At the end, Jane encourages Rafael and Petra. We will see how it goes this time. I was not very on board with this story last week, but maybe it can result in something sweet.

It is revealed that the sketch from last week is of Rose in her disguise, so now Rafael is working with the police to track Luisa and her. Rafael calls and tells Luisa that he has cancer, in an attempt to get her to come back. At the end of the episode, Luisa and Rose return to Miami, and Rose is arrested and revealed for who she is.

The wedding planning was very entertaining, and there were some great laughs there. I also really like that significant progress is being made with the Rose story, and that there were many references to things from the beginning of the series. I have mixed feelings about the Rafael and Petra romance, but it was handled well this week.

Score: 10/10

Jane the Virgin S3E18 Review

What's in store for Jane and Fabian? Is Petra in danger? Those are the biggest things we will find out this week on Jane the Virgin.

S3E18 "Chapter Sixty-Two"

Jane gets asked to write a column about dating, which could potentially get her book more attention. She tries to channel her inner Sex and the City, which is entertaining. Meanwhile, she ends up talking about books with Fabian. It's entertaining as he has analysis he believes is insightful, but is really very surface-level. Then, Jane prepares to have sex with Fabian, as he is now ready. Her inner conflict here is interesting, and I especially loved the fact that she got a call from Alba. Jane discovers that she and Fabian are not on the same page, but after Jane tells him what she really wanted, he ends up wanting that too. Jane worries about having casual sex, but she does it, and doesn't feel guilty.

When Jane goes home to talk to Mateo after he has a nightmare, he starts asking her some interesting questions, such as what "artificial" means and how babies are made. Mateo ends up running around the playground giving the girls special hugs. After these funny moments, things get sweet as Jane and Rafael explain to Mateo how he was made. What's also sweet this week is that Xo and Rogelio don't want to have a big wedding, because it may remind Jane of Michael, but she wants to celebrate them in a big way.

Petra is in danger, as we found out last week that Chuck is JP. The scenes with Petra and Chuck are tense, as we hope that Petra will find out before it's too late, and the way it is set up when she would have found out, but she denied Rafael's call because he left a voicemail saying that he had feelings for him is clever. However, we then get reminded that being JP doesn't mean that Chuck killed Scott, and when he tells Petra that he didn't kill Scott, it seems convincing. At the end of the episode, Rafael finds out that Petra heard his message, but they are interrupted by the police, who have new information.

I really don't care about the Rafael and Petra relationship (like, at all), but it was hardly present in this episode, and the other parts were all great, so this was a great episode.

Score: 10/10

Jane the Virgin S3E17 Review

This week we get to find out what Lina's up to now, as we haven't seen her yet since the time jump.

S3E17 "Chapter Sixty-One"

The beginning of the episode shows Jane when she was a teenager, going on a double date with Lina. In the present, we find out that Jane and Lina haven't been in touch very much recently, since Lina moved away, but it turns out she is in town. Jane and Lina meet up, but it is really awkward and weird. Alba tells Jane that when her husband died she found out who her real friends were, and when Jane finds out that Lina was in town back in June as well she believes that Lina abandoned her. When Jane and Lina talk, Lina reveals how she didn't know how to express her emotions around Jane when she was still really sad about Michael. This reasoning as to why they drifted apart was great and made total sense.

Jane finds out that Fabian does not want to have sex until he at least is in a serious relationship. This creates an interesting situation for Jane, who knows what it's like for someone to break up with her just because she doesn't want to have sex, but also has no interest in a serious relationship with Fabian. Lina reminds Jane that the two of them  don't have much in common, but they worked out as friends. So, Jane decides to get to know Fabian better, and they have a great time. I really liked seeing Jane confront this bias she had against Fabian for him not reading books like she does, and discovering that they can still have a great time.

The situation with Petra and Anezka regarding Scott's death is getting interesting. Petra reveals to Rafael that she dressed up as Anezka and made it clear to Scott that they were done, which someone caught on video, shortly before he died. A twist at the end of the episode reveals that someone mentioned in the burn book is Chuck, who currently happens to be with Petra.

Alba is getting annoyed reading immigration-related news, and when a woman in the gift shop tells another to speak English. However, she doesn't want to protest, because she is worried her green card could be taken away. After telling Mateo to be brave though, Alba decides to go to the march. She tells Jorge, and this is how she finds out that he is undocumented.

There are also a couple of romantic stories this week. Rafael tries to figure out his feelings for Petra, and Xo and Rogelio try to figure out their relationship. There was nothing special about Rafael and Petra really, it felt like a waste of time. For Xo and Rogelio, however, there was a great scene where Xo proposed to Rogelio. I especially loved Alba here, as she helps trick Rogelio.

Jane's two stories this week with Lina and with Fabian were both great, and I really liked how they connected. None of the other stories were particularly weak, aside from Rafael's feelings for Petra, though they didn't stand out either. Alba did provide some great moments, though there was a point where it felt a bit preachy.

Score: 9/10

Jane the Virgin S3E16 Review

Jane the Virgin is back for its last few episodes of its season, after airing only two episodes in the last nearly two months.

S3E16 "Chapter Sixty"

Jane is crushing on Rogelio's co-star, and the flashback to the moment she first felt this way about a guy is great, because it was so awkward, watching a telenovela with her mother and grandmother. Speaking of her grandmother, Jane and Xo discover that Alba has yet to tell Jorge that she doesn't want to have sex with him, which leads to a great moment where Jane says to Alba what Alba used to say to her. Alba tells Jorge, and it's great when the narrator puts #Telemundoandchill on the screen. Alba believes that she and Jorge have broken up when she doesn't hear from him, but that turns out not to be the case, and I am glad. Their relationship has been really sweet thus far, and Alba deserves this.

Rogelio is jealous of his co-star on his ridiculous telenovela (and it is hilarious when the narrator remarks on how "lady scientist" can just be "scientist"), and when he discovers that Jane has a crush on him, he forbids it. Jane later discovers that the co-star doesn't like her, but is a huge fan of Rogelio. The scene where he tells Rogelio this is a great one. Jane thinks that she is over him, but then he shows up at her door. Rogelio pretends to be fine with the two of them, but he is worried about him replacing Michael. This is a really sweet moment, and I like that the show is remembering other people's relationships with Michael, as Rogelio and Michael did have a special relationship.

Jane's editor tells her that her novel is good, and now it's time to move on to marketing. When Jane goes to the meeting, she discovers that they want to use her backstory to sell the book. This is a great story for Jane, because it really causes her to question what is most important to her. She believes that she has made the right decision in deciding that she wants the book to stand on its own, but when she talks to her old mentor, she tells her that this opportunity is too big to let her integrity stand in the way.

The scene where Jane makes the decision to allow the marketing people to use her backstory is a great one, because Gina Rodriguez really makes you feel how difficult of a decision this is for Jane. Jane talks to Alba about how she is able to talk about Michael now, but she doesn't want him to become an anecdote. The best part about Michael's death in this story is how Alba can give Jane advice, and telling her how things go from her experience. What Alba says here is very interesting, that her grief will evolve, but not go away. Jane gets to meet her first fan, and it is a great moment, as they are both equally excited.

Rafael is dealing with Luisa this week when she shows up with little notice, and it's entertaining when Rafael won't let her see any of the kids, though Luisa wants to. Luisa and Rose's conversation later about if Rose killed Scott is hilarious. The duo continues to entertain as Luisa goes to dinner with Rafael, and Rose has to keep from being found out. Rose ends up wanting to leave, but Luisa wants to stay. I really like that Luisa is finally trying to make some good decisions. She's a lovable mess.

Each part of the episode was entertaining, though the story about Jane and her novel was the best one, and while Petra didn't get much attention this week, the end of the episode set up an interesting challenge for her, as she has to get Anezka out of police custody in order to keep her secrets secret.

Score: 10/10
