Batwoman Canceled by The CW

The fight is over for Batwoman. The CW comic book series has been axed after only three seasons, making it the shortest-running of The CW's "ArrowVerse" franchise, a franchise that has more-or-less defined The CW for the better part of a decade. The show didn't rate notably lower than the rest of the CW's lineup, with a 0.09 18-49 season average that placed it smack in the middle of the pack on the lowest-rated Big Five network. However, production costs and the impending sale of The CW seem to have led to an early exit for the show. The show underwent a major casting change over its run, with original star Ruby Rose exiting the show after a single season of playing the titular hero, being replaced by Javicia Leslie for the remaining two seasons. Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang and Robin Givens also starred in the series.

Ruby Rose Departs Batwoman

Ruby Rose has exited The CW's Batwoman after a single season. Rose, who starred as the titular character, will be recast. Batwoman has already been renewed for a second season and was the top new show on The CW this season and their #4 show overall. It hasn't been revealed why Rose has left the show, though Rose is said to have made the decision herself. Rose was injured during filming of season one of Batwoman, but sources say that isn't the reason for her departure.

As predicted, the CW pretty much renewed all non-final seasoned current shows on the air, except for Katy Keene. No incorrect predictions were made so far this season. Legends of Tomorrow, In the Dark, and Roswell, New Mexico were also renewed. I didn't give them a prediction simply because they have not premiered new seasons yet. Overall, the current record for the CW is 10-0.

Simply put, the current speculation for renewals has something to do with the potential for a possible writer's strike that would possibly affect next season. Currently, the WGA has been in legal disputes with multiple talent agencies over its Code of Conduct. The current deal with the AMPTP is set to expire on May 1. That's expected to continue through next year.

Riverdale: As it has been glaringly obvious, Riverdale remains certain to be renewed. But the CW has released the midseason schedule and Katy Keene is getting the Thursday 8pm slot instead of the Wednesday 9pm slot as previously predicted, which means Supernatural is getting the Monday 8pm timeslot starting March 16 for the final episodes. I don't know about you, but this signals a lack of confidence in Riverdale as a lead-in. Outside of Friday, Wednesday has been the lowest rated night on average since the second week of the CW season with Riverdale averaging a 0.25 and Nancy Drew a 0.17. The majority of people in the poll says that Riverdale won't have a final season next season, while the second place option says that Riverdale will get the final season treatment. The rest predicted that Riverdale will be canceled. Here's why I do not think a cancelation will happen. Take a peek at the Drama Scorecard. The ratings for every WB show outside of The Flash, Batwoman, and Supernatural are within a tenth of each other in the 0.2 range. Things are getting dicey at the CW. If CW decides that a change is needed, especially with Viacom merging with CBS and Warner Bros. merging with AT&T, does a show that averages consistent 0.2s need to be renewed? That probably won't work for ViacomCBS's bottom line or WarnerMedia's. Riverdale's ratings are also close to or at the median CW rating. And the CW is averaging a 0.26 in the key demo rating this season, which is down quite a bit from last season. CW cannot realistically cancel every 0.2 WB show, but they can't renew everything either. As far as Riverdale's concerned, that 0.25 warrants either a move to Friday or a move back to 9pm, and I suspect they'll take the latter option next season. They can't do a Friday move unless they cancel either Charmed (unlikely) or Dynasty (even more unlikely as the CW has not canceled a show after three seasons since Veronica Mars). Dynasty will get renewed for a fourth season even if ratings reach the Blutarsky. Now that I've done this long spiel, I'll get to the other two shows.

Batwoman and Legacies: Batwoman and Legacies earn upgrades to certain to be renewed for many reasons. For one thing, Batwoman is the #2 show on the CW and has a full season order. It stabilized in the ratings and got a new series high with the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. With Legacies, the ratings have been stable for quite some time in the 0.23-0.26 range. Legacies is also averaging near the CW median. For both shows, I don't expect either of them to get canceled this season. Like I said with Riverdale, the CW cannot cancel every WB show in the 0.2 range.

For all the shows mentioned, there are likely to be nonlinear factors involved just like with every season. They just won't give all the public details and reasons why.

With the midseason shows, DC's Legends of Tomorrow will premiere first. You'll get a prediction on that, as with Katy Keene and Roswell, New Mexico. But you won't likely get a prediction for In the Dark, since the majority of the episodes run into summer. For chart purposes, In the Dark is marked as a summer show.

All American: All American returned to a 0.3 in the A18-49 demo on Monday night after a timeslot change from Wednesday 9pm to Monday 8pm. It even skewed younger than its last season one episodes. The A18-34 rating for All American was also at a 0.3, compared to a 0.1 for the later episodes. This is good news for the show, which likely leads it in the middle of the CW pack. Because the average is now at 0.3, it does not seem bad. Don't expect All American to get canceled any time soon this season. All American is certain to be renewed. You can thank Netflix and local programming for getting it to its current series high.

Batwoman: Starting out as an 8pm show benefitted Batwoman ratings as it started at a 0.5 in the key demo. It was apparently heavily rounded, even as it grew in the half hours. It may likely fall in the ratings in the coming weeks, but I think this is not going to affect the show much. It will start as likely to be renewed.

Nancy Drew: The newest occupant of the Wednesday 9pm timeslot scored a 0.3, after a 0.4 from Riverdale. Historically adjusted, it did better than both Dynasty, Life Sentence, and to a small extent, All American. Considering this is a CBS produced show, the renewal ratings bar is lower than the WB shows. It easily clears that. Nancy Drew is likely to be renewed.

Dynasty: Like I said in the preseason post, Dynasty is in its third season. Regardless of ratings, third season shows get renewed for a fourth season. Dynasty is safe, even if it hits the coveted Blutarsky (0.0) this season. Dynasty is certain to be renewed.

Legacies: The show will have 20 episodes this season, to finish around the same time as Supernatural. It started at essentially the same premiere rating as season 1, which in today's ratings landscape is pretty good. Will it remain steady through the fall? I think it will. Legacies is likely to be renewed.

Charmed: The CW has not canceled a second season Friday bound show since The Carrie Diaries. Charmed is produced by CBS, which essentially makes ratings irrelevant. There's virtually no way Charmed is getting canceled this season, regardless of what Holly Marie Combs tweets about the show. I say, let the anti-fan bashing continue for another season. Charmed is likely to be renewed.
