One Day At A Time Canceled Again

One Day at a Time may truly have no more days left. After its cancellation by Netflix and subsequent rescue by Pop TV, the sitcom has been canceled again. ViacomCBS, which aired the series on Pop, TV Land and later on, CBS, announced that season four would be the final season of the show today, opting not to move forward amid the COVID-19 pandemic and modest ratings for the series. COVID shut down production on season four six episodes into the season (an animated special was later produced), meaning that six episodes of the show will go unfilmed. Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz and Stephen Tobolowsky starred in the series. Producer Sony is looking for a new home for it once again.

One Day At A Time Renewed by Pop

It's been a long journey to get to this point, but One Day At a Time won't be ending after three season, after all. The acclaimed Netflix comedy has been saved by Pop (the US home of Schitt's Creek), a network that is owned by CBS, which has been a supporter of the show since Netflix canceled it. The CBS All-Access service was initially interested in the series, before Netflix shot down that idea. While Netflix was able to stop a deal for ODAAT to be rescued by a competing streaming service, they were unable to stop any deals for a television network to save it, which allowed Pop to get the rights to the show. The series aired 39 episodes on Netflix, and will air at least 13 more on Pop. In addition to producing 13 new episodes, the cable network will also receive the right to broadcast the earlier seasons of the show. Parent network CBS will re-broadcast the fourth season after it airs on Pop, as well. The series stars Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz and Stephen Tobolowsky, and is a reboot of the 1970s Norman Lear series of the same name.

One Day At a Time Canceled After Three Seasons

Netflix has axed veteran comedy series One Day At a Time after three seasons. The series garnered acclaim and a dedicated fanbase over the years, but Netflix has stated that the viewership just wasn't there for the show. The series was praised for its diverse cast, focusing on a Latina veteran and her family, including her openly lesbian daughter and her stubborn Cuban-born mother. The series was a reboot of Norman Lear's 1975 series of the same name, and featured Lear as an executive producer. Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce created the series. Justina Machado starred alongside EGOT winner Rita Moreno, Isabella Gomez, Todd Grinnell, Marcel Ruiz, and Stephen Tobolowsky. The series' cancellation is another strong indicator that Netflix is getting rid of shows that they don't produce in order to focus on in-house productions, following the mass cancellation of their entire Marvel catalogue.

In Memoriam -- Nanette Fabray (1920-2018)

Written in Tribute of a Cheery Legend by Bridger Cunningham
The sitcom world has lost one of its stellar powers, as One Day at a Time's Nanette Fabray has passed away at the age of 97 on February 22.  Fabray starred on CBS' longstanding sitcom as Katherine Romano from 1979-84, incidentally alongside her real-life niece Shelly Fabares starred as (non-related) Francine Webster during that same time.  Born on October 27, 1920, Fabray polished onto the silver screen in 1939's The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex.
During the rising trend of television programming in the 1950's, Fabray enjoyed a career renaissance after a 1953 appearance in Omnibus.  The actress enjoyed several appearances in the anthology style playhouse theaters before making several guest appearances  in television shows and movies.  After the playhouse anthology trend was briefly revived in the early 1970's by CBS' sitcom series Love, American Style, Fabray made several appearances before landing on One Day at a Time.  Initially a guest appearance, Fabray's performance was so well received that showrunners killed off the character's on-screen husband to enable more appearances and stories for Katherine Romano.
One Day at a Time made a plethora of casting changes throughout its run, swinging the pendulum in Fabray's favor in 1982 as she was bumped to contract player for the last two seasons.  Following ODAAT's ending after 9 seasons, Fabray slowed down her career.  Her last role reunited her with niece Shelly Fabares again as she appeared on Coach as Mildred Armstrong, the mother of Fabares' character Christine.  Fabray is survived by a son and was predeceased in death by her second husband in 1973.
