NCIS: Los Angeles Canceled by CBS

CBS is saying farewell to one of their longest-running series, announcing today that NCIS: Los Angeles will end after its current fourteenth season. This announcement comes less than two weeks after the NCIS crossover event involving LA, which was a ratings success that saw LA hit its highest rating since April 2022. In spite of that, NCIS: LA was one of CBS's lowest ratings performers this season, ranking fourteenth among seventeen scripted programs on the Tiffany Network this season. This is not the first NCIS series to be canceled, as NCIS: New Orleans was canceled while airing in LA's current time slot just two years ago. Barring the announcement of a new spinoff, or the cancellation of a different NCIS series, next season will be the first with only two NCIS series on the CBS lineup since the 2013-14 season. NCIS: Los Angeles starred LL Cool J, Chris O'Donnell, Daniela Ruah, Eric Christian Olsen, Medalion Rahimi and Gerald McRaney. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Ratings Analysis: After years of dwindling ratings, the 94th edition of 'The Oscars' (3.76) grew by a whopping 77% from the 2021 ceremony (2.12) and rose by over six million in the total viewers department (16.6 million vs. 10.4 million). ABC's 'Red Carpet' special (1.22) preceded the main event and barreled past the pre-show from the year prior (0.66). In spite of the increased competition, Fox weathered the blow quite nicely as 'The Simpsons' (0.36, +0.07), 'The Great North' (0.27, +0.01), and 'Family Guy' (0.37, +0.04) all made visible gains. 'Bob's Burgers' (0.33, -0.02) was unable to follow that trend and ended up tying its series low. The 7PM hour was occupied by 'NASCAR' (0.58) and a rerun of 'Welcome to Flatch' (0.24). On CBS, '60 Minutes' (0.97, -0.07) lost seven-hundredths and led into two hours of 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.59/0.52). The first episode was the highest-rated since its season premiere while the second was a hundredth shy of last week. 'SWAT' (0.46, -0.03) took a hit in the 10PM timeslot. Leading out of an encore of 'American Song Contest' (0.17), NBC's 'Weakest Link' (0.23, -0.04) lost four-hundredths and was followed by a rising 'Transplant' (0.15, +0.02). The CW's 'Riverdale' (0.06, +0.01) picked up a hundredth and led into the finale of 'March' (0.0).

Finals Update: 'The Oscars' (+0.9), 'SWAT' (+0.1), 'The Simpsons' (+0.1), and 'Family Guy' (+0.1) adjusted up. 'The Oscars Red Carpet' (-0.5), '60 Minutes' (-0.4), and the repeat of 'Welcome to Flatch' (-0.1) adjusted down.

Ratings Analysis: Though it was down by almost 21% from its February 2021 premiere (1.17), ABC's 'American Idol' (0.93) returned in relatively solid shape and bested its May season finale (0.88). The programs surrounding 'Idol' clearly benefited from its return, with 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (0.65, +0.21) surging at 7 and 'The Rookie' (0.44, +0.11) climbing to a new season high in the 10PM slot. CBS's '60 Minutes' (0.68, +0.16) rose by nearly two-tenths, but 'The Equalizer' (0.58, -0.10) and 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.49, -0.03) slipped for their first installments in nearly two months. In the 10PM timeslot, 'SWAT' (0.45, +0.03) narrowly beat out 'The Rookie' and topped its hour. Fox's animation lineup was fully intact for the first time since December, but 'The Simpsons' (0.39, -0.29), 'The Great North' (0.28, -0.14), and 'Bob's Burgers' (0.40, -0.10) plummeted to new season lows. 'Family Guy' (0.42, -0.06) avoided a new low and was the highest-rated of the four sitcoms. The 7PM hour was occupied by a 'NASCAR'-inflated rerun of 'The Simpsons' (0.70) and a 'Call Me Kat' encore (0.26) that went higher than its last original episode. NBC aired repeats of 'America's Got Talent: Extreme' (0.34), 'The Endgame' (0.19), and 'Law & Order' (0.15). The CW's 'March' (0.03, -0.03) was 50% lower than the last time it aired and lost to the 'All American: Homecoming' repeat (0.04) that led into it.

Finals Update: '60 Minutes' (+0.1), 'The Equalizer' (+0.1), 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (+0.1), and 'SWAT' (+0.1) adjusted up.
