Beyond The TV Grave: The Mayor

This is the 'Beyond The TV Grave' series where we shell out our thoughts on shows that were canceled after airing no less than 5 episodes and no more than 50.

Despite the divided state of America, one thing all can agree on is that nobody can agree on an ideal politician. It has always been virtually impossible to find a candidate that caters to every voter. But, thanks to The Mayor, we now have a politician that everyone can root for. While Courtney Rose (Brandon Michael Hall) may not be a perfect mayor, his intentions are always to help the people of Fort Grey. In a world loaded with political corruption, it's refreshing to see someone who genuinely cares regardless of their fictional status.

The Mayor centers on underground rapper Courtney Rose who runs for mayor as a publicity stunt to promote his career. In a surprising turn of events, Rose actually wins and has to take up a career in politics despite his lack of experience. Fortunately, he has help from his friends T.K. (Marcel Spears) and Jermaine (Bernard David Jones) alongside his chief of staff Val (Lea Michele) and mother Dina (Yvette Nicole Brown). First and foremost, the firm dynamics between the characters make the show thoroughly enjoyable. Every performer in the main cast has great chemistry with each other and they all bring something unique to the table. For instance, T.K. and Jermaine act as the comic reliefs but the writers also add depth to their characters. An example of this can be found in the episode 'The Pitch'. In that installment, the subplot focuses on T.K.'s desire of being a father and his insecurities regarding the subject. For Jermaine, he opens up about what he really thinks about Courtney's rap skills in 'Lockdown'. The Mayor could have easily let them solely act as funnymen, but the writers and actors went the extra mile to create meaningful, well-developed characters.

Coincidently, Courtney plays a perfect protagonist. Hall brings him to life as a devoted rapper turned underdog politician who simply wants what's best for the city. He plays perfectly off of the by-the-book Val. As for Val, she proudly plays the nerd trope in a believable, engaging manner. To add on, Dina Rose also steals the show. The finale gives her a great moment in the sun as she runs against T.K. for a position of political power and unleashes her competitive nature. Aside from that, the juxtaposition of her sassy and caring personality traits make Yvette's character shine throughout The Mayor's first season. Last but not least, Ed Gunt (David Spade) is the perfect cartoon-like villain for the comedy series. His ruthless demeanor and selfish attitude towards Courtney made me furious while watching which simultaneously makes him the perfect antagonist. With that said, Spade's character did show off his human side in a pleasant subplot with Dina in 'Lockdown'. Unfortunately, the writers were not able to further explore this side of Gunt since the series was cut short.

While classic sitcoms like Seinfeld do a great job of creating mean-spirited characters and younger comedies like Last Man on Earth are darker and focus more on plot, The Mayor simply dives head-first for laughs and feel-good moments. Every episode provides a new twist on an old storyline or creates fresh, political-based plotlines. Out of the show's 13-episode run, 'Lockdown' showcases the series at its best in every category. The episode balances comedy and character relationships in a phenomenal manner. It brings out the best of each individual in the cast and simply works marvelously as a bottle episode. Aside from that, 'Here Comes the Governor' beautifully showcases how one can easily forget what they represent in the political arena. Fortunately, T.K. and Jermaine help Courtney return to his roots. In a very powerful scene, Courtney realizes that what he stands for is more important than appealing to individuals with power. While those outings are my favorite, every episode is a gem and definitely worth watching.

In the end, The Mayor shows off its strengths in the comedy and story department. The short-lived series produced 13 hilarious episodes full of heart and great moments. While ABC may have ruthlessly pull the plug on the series, The Mayor is still well-worth your time. Instead of recommending a handful of episodes, I advise everyone to watch the full series from beginning to end. This behind-the-scenes look at the life of a rapper turned mayor is truly a fun, engaging ride.

Other Thoughts
  • Arsenio Hall and E-40 make some great guest appearances on the show.
  • "The crooks in the government think they're so clever. They say it's coming soon. We know it's coming never." Beautifully said.
  • That freestyle rap battle in 'Lockdown' was perfection.
  • My description of the series: A mix of Atlanta and the Chris Rock movie Head of State.
  • You can watch some episodes on the ABC website and all episodes on Hulu.
  • Much love to the entire cast and crew of the series.

'Kevin Probably' Gets Additional Episodes, 'The Mayor' Gets Additional Scripts

In an attempt to help save the world and keep the mayor in office, ABC has given 3 additional episodes to newbie drama 'Kevin Probably' and 3 additional scripts to freshman comedy 'The Mayor'. Both shows have been struggling in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Their latest episodes garnered just a 0.7 rating and were the lowest-rated shows on ABC's Tuesday night line-up. 'The Mayor' focuses on Courtney Rose's transition from a small-time rapper to becoming the mayor of Fort Grey. 'Kevin Probably' centers on Kevin Finn's mission to save the world after he meets a celestial being.

New Show Hit/Miss Fall 2017 - ABC Comedy

If you are new to this feature, its purpose is analyzing what may cause a new show to succeed or fail. This year, each article will talk about all of the new shows on a network of a genre (comedy or drama). ABC only has one new comedy this fall, but for consistency's sake I will keep the title as ABC comedy (just as I will when we get to FOX comedy). This article takes on The Mayor, which will air Tuesdays at 9:30 after Black-ish, and premieres on October 3rd.

The Mayor

What May Cause The Mayor to be a Hit?

While ABC's drama promotion is spread out among four shows, the network only has one new comedy, so it should get a solid amount of promotional attention. Also, ABC found success in fall comedy last year, with both Speechless and American Housewife succeeding. The Mayor's timeslot also could help it. Like its lead-in Black-ish, The Mayor focuses on African-American characters, and while it is not a family comedy like Black-ish, the main character's family is still part of the show. When it comes to competition, Bull likely has a completely different audience, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine is fairly low-rated now, which just leaves the question, how much overlap will This Is Us really have with The Mayor?

YouTube and social media also show potential for The Mayor. The official trailer for The Mayor has even more views than that of The Good Doctor (4.381 million views at the time this article was written), and a strong 95% of people who reacted to the trailer liked it. On Facebook, The Mayor has 86K likes, more than all of ABC's dramas except The Good Doctor. On Twitter, The Mayor only beats two out of four of the network's dramas, but its 2,201 followers puts it much closer to The Good Doctor's level there than that of Kevin or Ten Days.

What May Cause The Mayor to be a Miss for ABC?

If you were to boil down ABC's comedies of recent years to a simple description, you would find a strong correlation showing that the ones who didn't center around families didn't succeed. The semi-on-brand-ness of Imaginary Mary didn't work, which doesn't bode well for The Mayor, which is even less on-brand.

Also, one needs to wonder if This Is Us will have an impact on The Mayor. Considering how Black-ish seemed to have been affected by Empire, it's possible. The issue for The Mayor is that while Black-ish got some time before it had to face Empire, and throughout that it had the strong lead-in of Modern Family, The Mayor will begin to face This Is Us right at the start, and its lead-in will be Black-ish, which gets solid ratings, but is moving nights. Does The Mayor have the support necessary to face This Is Us?

What to Expect from ABC's Fall Comedy

Honestly, the odds don't seem to be in The Mayor's favor. But the biggest question could end up being, will This Is Us have a significant impact on The Mayor's ratings? And I'm leaning towards no as the answer to that question. However, The Mayor might really have to prove itself in order to stick around for the full year, as ABC has the revival of Roseanne and new comedies Alex Inc. and Splitting Up Together to fit in mid-season. This is a tricky one, but for some reason I have a good feeling about it.

What do you expect from The Mayor? And what factors do you think will contribute most to making it a hit or a miss? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
