Star Canceled by Fox After Three Seasons

Musical drama Star won't be returning on Fox next season. The network canceled the series despite a strong season for the show ratings-wise. It currently averages a 1.06, which is a 19% decline from season two. Along with its lead-in Empire, the show has been a strong and reliable Wednesday night performer for Fox. However, the show had a difficult time being renewed last season due to high costs, and now found itself as an outside production due to 20th Century Fox being purchased by Disney. All of this was just too much for even a solid performer like Star to overcome. Jude Demorest, Queen Latifah and Brandy star in the series, which aired its series finale on May 8. This was a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

The Cool Kids: The Cool Kids have cooled off since fall, but one thing is for sure, its 0.86 average is still great for a Friday. But it will likely depend on how many new comedies that would be ordered as well as schedule space. As for now, don't count The Cool Kids out just yet. It is still likely to be renewed.

Empire: There has still been no news since the controversy broke out with Jussie Smollett. In the latest development, the charges have dropped against Smollett. Despite that, the ratings have fallen on the wayside, settling at the 1.1-1.2 range. I still think Empire will be renewed, but costs will be a factor. It's in the leans renewal category.

I also decided to downgrade Star to a likely cancelation, as once again, costs are going to be a factor. With the FOX merger, there will be some limited real estate. Star may not fit in the programming slate going forward.

FOX Renew/Cancel: Empire is Becoming Less Safe, Proven Innocent is Certain to be Canceled

Welcome to the latest installment of FOX Renew/Cancel. Since the last predictions were published, Proven Innocent premiered and continues to be low rated and Empire is in limbo. Let's get to this week's predictions!

Empire: Jussie Smollett's legal troubles are causing the show to be in limbo. The show has yet to be renewed for another season, and cast and crew are certainly panicking. Yet, the show is still the highest rated scripted show on FOX, barely beating 9-1-1. For the highest rated show on FOX, it should have been renewed by now, but it is not. I still think it will be renewed, but it will have to depend on whether Smollett gets fired.

Proven Innocent: Proven Innocent remains low, very low on Friday. It premiered DOA and is still steady around that number. But since WWE is coming to Friday, there is no need for Proven Innocent. It's certain to be canceled.

But for the other shows, the biggest race is Star vs. The Resident. Star leans cancelation due to expenses, while The Resident leans renewal. They are the shows I would argue to be pure toss-ups. It depends on Lee Daniels, and it definitely depends on WWE. We'll know more once Star returns and then we'll reassess.

Star Renewed by FOX

The Ratings Junkie Thursday, May 10, 2018

FOX has renewed Star, Lee Daniels' music drama not named Empire, for a third season. The show got a time slot upgrade this season by getting to air after Empire, and did a solid job at holding an audience, becoming one of FOX's highest-rated shows. This was a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Does FOX Have the Best Comedy Development?--Part 2 of 6

Trying To Find The Empire Of Comedies

Along with sports comedies, FOX has a second theme that seems to be reoccurring throughout their development slate: music. With Empire being the huge hit it is (at least now), and Lee Daniels
planning a sister series drama in Star, FOX now seems to want to make some comedies based around music—not in a Galavant style, though, don’t confuse music-based comedy with a musical comedy like Galavant. In addition, they will have a couple of hours more of their schedule to fill midseason through the ending of American Idol. So, let’s see what they have:
·      Belles & Whistles is a single-cam that depicts a dad who moves to Nashville to pursue his musical dreams after being fired from his job as an engineer in Silicon Valley, California. So, if you watch Empire and Nashville but wish they were funnier, maybe this is for you? It’s from 20th Century Fox but does not yet have a put pilot commitment.
·      Eat Pray Thug is a single-cam that depicts an Indian-American rapper, Ambudkar, who still lives with his parents in Queens, New York. It’s in a better position than Belles & Whistles, as it has bells and whistles attached to the script (meaning there is a penalty they have to pay if they don’t order a pilot—like my pun?). It’s produced by 20th Century Fox. Looks like a solid attempt to diversify broadcast TV even more.
·      Front Man is another single-cam, and is about a person the opposite of the one in Belles & Whistles. This protagonist is starting to realize that he won’t be a success in music, and instead starts to sing in a local wedding band. Warner Brothers is the major production company behind it, and Elizabeth Banks is directing the pilot. Speaking of the fact that it has a put pilot commitment, so far its chances are greater than the other two listed above.

FOX next season will have Empire on Wednesday (and maybe Star), but Empire won’t be on all season long. Additionally, there’s a hole in the schedule left by American Idol, and maybe picking up one or two of these comedies could be a smart idea. You can definitely tell that they are trying, at the very least, and the storylines seem promising. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below!
