Empire to End With Season 6

After six seasons, what was once the biggest show on all of broadcast will come to an end. That show in question is Empire, a show whose end was clearly nearing. That end has now been confirmed for next season, and given the extended 20-episode run for the season, the show will wrap with 104 episodes to its name. The show has been notable for its large year-to-year drops each season, and it averaged a 1.35 this season. That was still enough to make it the #3 show on Fox this season, and so the show will get to go out on its own terms, unlike many other shows that were canceled last season. Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard star in the series.

Empire Renewed by FOX for a Sixth Season

Empire Renewed by FOX for a Sixth Season

FOX has renewed Empire for a sixth season. The drama is down 26% year-to-year in the Adults 18-49 demographic with a 1.37 rating so far. This still makes it one of their higher-rated shows. It is being reported by Variety that Jussie Smollet, who stars on the show as Jamal Lyon, is unlikely to return for the season.

This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide, and joins The Resident, 9-1-1, Last Man Standing, and the three animated comedies on FOX’s 2019-20 schedule.

The Cool Kids: The Cool Kids have cooled off since fall, but one thing is for sure, its 0.86 average is still great for a Friday. But it will likely depend on how many new comedies that would be ordered as well as schedule space. As for now, don't count The Cool Kids out just yet. It is still likely to be renewed.

Empire: There has still been no news since the controversy broke out with Jussie Smollett. In the latest development, the charges have dropped against Smollett. Despite that, the ratings have fallen on the wayside, settling at the 1.1-1.2 range. I still think Empire will be renewed, but costs will be a factor. It's in the leans renewal category.

I also decided to downgrade Star to a likely cancelation, as once again, costs are going to be a factor. With the FOX merger, there will be some limited real estate. Star may not fit in the programming slate going forward.

Empire: Jussie Smollett's legal troubles are causing the show to be in limbo. The show has yet to be renewed for another season, and cast and crew are certainly panicking. Yet, the show is still the highest rated scripted show on FOX, barely beating 9-1-1. For the highest rated show on FOX, it should have been renewed by now, but it is not. I still think it will be renewed, but it will have to depend on whether Smollett gets fired.

Proven Innocent: Proven Innocent remains low, very low on Friday. It premiered DOA and is still steady around that number. But since WWE is coming to Friday, there is no need for Proven Innocent. It's certain to be canceled.

But for the other shows, the biggest race is Star vs. The Resident. Star leans cancelation due to expenses, while The Resident leans renewal. They are the shows I would argue to be pure toss-ups. It depends on Lee Daniels, and it definitely depends on WWE. We'll know more once Star returns and then we'll reassess.

FOX Renew/Cancel: Proven Innocent Enters + An Update On Empire

The Ratings Junkie Tuesday, February 19, 2019

Since the initial publishing of the most recent edition of FOX Renew/Cancel, FOX officially renewed Bob’s Burgers and Family Guy, and premiered drama Proven Innocent. Here are updated predictions, followed by brief analysis below. The shows are ranked in a particular order: the show at the top of the Certain Renewal category is what is predicted to be the most safe, and shows listed under it become increasingly vulnerable. Let us know what you think of these predictions, and leave your own in the comments below!

I’m holding off on putting Proven Innocent in the Certain Cancelation category for now, as it seems pretty harsh to completely write off a show after just one episode. For all we know, it could creep upward to the point where it’s doubling its premiere audience. While there’s barely any chance of that happening, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt for the time being. Still, it is far from safe for a renewal; its premiere rating was awfully low and at this moment, it doesn’t have a whole lot going for it when it comes to renewal chances.

Cast member Jussie Smollett from Empire has been in the news lately for an alleged hate crime against him, with new evidence suggesting the possibility that it was staged. They are already reducing his role in some upcoming episodes this season as a result of ongoing investigations, and while we cannot know for sure whether or not he is at fault for this, the incident has put Empire and FOX into a messy situation. If they have to write him out of the show, it would possibly make the show cheaper with one less salary to pay. But who knows if the show/Smollett will find itself into any lawsuits that are large to the point where it doesn’t make sense for FOX to drag it out another season, especially now that they are about to lose ownership rights in it with their studio’s merger with Disney. I can still see it getting renewed, though I’ve bumped it down to a likely renewal. Take note though that it remains the second-most safe show though.

I’ve decided to move chairs on the Titanic a little bit and switch The Gifted and Lethal Weapon. The latter’s ratings are not as bad as they could be, and I’m thinking of the possibility that “New Fox” may want to maintain a relationship with Warner Brothers now that they are losing their sister studio.
