Hairspray Live! (Spoiler-Free) Review: NBC's Live Musical is A-mazing

Hairspray Live! aired tonight, and I can say that, unequivocally, Hairspray Live! was NBC's the best live musical yet. I must admit, I had never seen Hairspray, so I was not excited when they announced it was the next musical. But by the time tonight rolled around, I couldn't wait for it. I watched it before I watched The Goldbergs (one of my favorite shows). That's how excited I was for it. And boy, I was not disappointed. Note: this is a spoiler-free review, because for those that haven't yet seen the show, or any version of Hairspray, I don't want to ruin the magic for you.

Hairspray Live! was so, so good. It was just so much fun, and that's really what mattered. That's what made The Wiz Live and Grease Live work so well, and the lack of fun made The Sound of Music Live and Peter Pan Live, well, kind of disappointing and boring. The whole cast of Hairspray Live! was so great, and the casting was just top notch.

I was initially skeptical of Ariana Grande in the role of Penny. But she was great, and delivered my personal favorite performance in a crowd of great performances. My favorite moments of the show always happened to feature Grande. Maddie Baillio was great in the lead, and was incredibly well-cast. She's an amazing Tracy, and she can really sing.

Andrea Martin was also great. Her role was relatively small, but every second she was on TV was awesome. Prudy was such a great secondary villain, and Andrea Martin really made it work.

Man, Rosie O'Donnell is really having a great year. She's been great on Mom, Match Game, and now Hairspray Live! I'm not a big fan of hers, but she was pretty great in this.

You Can't Stop the Beat is just so much fun, isn't it? It's just so catchy and fun to sing along to. They really knocked it out of the park.

I can't end this review without mentioning Jennifer Hudson, who was amazing as Motormouth Maybelle. I loved her in this role, and she probably delivered the best vocals of the night.

Hairspray Live! was truly a great experience through and through. The lead roles were so amazing in their roles, and made this work so well. This right here is the best of the best when it comes to TV musicals, folks.

Grade: A+
MVP: Ariana Grande
Favorite Musical Moment: You Can't Stop the Beat

Well, NBC really put together something amazing here. I'll be back in 2017 for NBC's next two live events- A Few Good Men Live and Bye Bye Birdie Live. Let's hope that can be as good as Hairspray Live!

TV's 2016 in Review: My 15 Favorite TV Moments of 2016

15- Jimmy Kimmel Hosts the Emmy Awards
Jimmy Kimmel Live is one of three late night shows that I watch. So I was incredibly excited to see him host my favorite awards shows, the Emmys. He was great. So great that he will be hosting the Oscars in 2017. I really enjoyed all of his bits, and I wish he was on screen longer.

14- The Gilmore Girls Revival is Total "Bulls***"
The Gilmore Girls revival was a slight letdown. But, as usual, Kelly Bishop knocked it out of the freaking park. Like seriously, someone give this woman an Emmy. Now. She was the best part of the show by far, and Emily Gilmore was the only character I found myself liking more after this revival. That "Bulls***" scene was killer.

13- FX Becomes Better
While most devoted their attention to FX's other new fall comedy (Atlanta), I watched Better Things. And I really, really enjoyed it. While it took a little while to find itself, by the end, I was really loving it. I can't wait until it returns for season 2.

12- Netflix Gets Stranger
Stranger Things was the breakout hit of the summer, and by the time I watched it in October, seemingly everyone had already seen it. It was really fun, and Winona Ryder was amazing in it. Netflix has had a lot of new shows this year, but Stranger Things stands out among them all.

11- John Oliver Talks about Donald Trump
Before this clip became popular, I'd never seen John Oliver's show. I watched it online, and I found it to be really funny. While I'm still not a regular viewer of Last Week Tonight, I appreciate his work, and I'll still check out clips on YouTube.

10- Denise Hemphill Loves Quantico
Denise is my favorite character on Scream Queens. And when she "died",  I was incredibly angry with the show. And then she came back to the show. Which was incredible, because she got to talk about Quantico some more, and that was my favorite part of the entire second season of Scream Queens.

9- Seth Meyers Takes a Closer Look
"A Closer Look" is always a segment I look forward to on Late Night with Seth Meyers. It's my favorite part of the whole show, and it's improved a lot since its introduction. This year, with Trump/Clinton in full swing, it was at the top of its game, and I can't wait for more.

8- Lady Dynamite
Netflix is known for some pretty high-quality shows (well, also Fuller House, but still), and Lady Dynamite is among my favorite. It may not have received the same attention as Stranger Things, but it was by far my favorite of Netflix's new shows (and they had a lot) this year. I don't like it quite as much as Grace and Frankie, but I still adore it. Speaking of, when the heck is it coming back?

7- NBC Goes to the Good Place
NBC's newest comedy series The Good Place is among my favorite shows of the year. It's brilliantly crafted and acted, and I find it to be hysterical. Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, and the rest of the cast are just really great in this show, and I can't wait to finally see its first (hopefully of many) season wrap up in January 2017.

6- Sarah, Sarah, Sarah!
The People Vs. OJ Simpson was one of the most acclaimed shows of the year, and I adored it. Most of my love for it was because of Sarah Paulson, who knocked it out of the park. "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia" was one of my favorite episodes of television this year (and maybe ever).

5- Sam Bee Goes Full Frontal
Before Full Frontal, I had never seen Samantha Bee in any television program, as I never watched the Daily Show. However, I decided to tune in, and I'm so glad I did. Full Frontal has quickly become one of my favorite shows, and I look forward to hearing her take on the crazy things that Donald Trump does happen each week.

4- David S. Pumpkins
David S. Pumpkins became an internet sensation after his debut on the Tom Hanks episode of SNL. The sketch left me thinking two things: "That was brilliant!" and "That was so weird!". David Pumpkins is arguably the best SNL sketch of Season 42 so far, and will probably become a classic Halloween sketch.

3- Rachel Bloom Wins the Golden Globe
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was the best new show of the fall 2015 season, and Rachel Bloom received critical acclaim for her role in the series. She appeared to be an underdog for the Golden Globe win, but she defeated several other worthy nominees, winning the CW's second consecutive Golden Globe. It was a deserved win that made me so incredibly happy.

2- Live from New York, It's Ariana Grande
This is SNL's second appearance on this list, and it deserves it, after an excellent 2016. Ariana Grande was, without a doubt, my favorite host of the 2010s, and one of my favorite ever. This was such a great episode, from start to finish, and Grande was the reason it all worked. She truly shined in the Tidal and Sound of Music sketches, while taking a backseat in the excellent Mermaids sketch. No doubt, she'll be back on the SNL stage.

1- Hairspray Live!
When Hairspray Live was announced, I had my doubts, but those were put to rest after watching it. Hairspray Live tops my list for the best TV moment of 2016. I've seen it about 10 times now, and I still love it. Everything about this was just amazing, and everyone killed it. Especially Ariana Grande.

In a terrible, terrible year, these things made me a little more happy, and for that reason, they're the best of the worst.

SNL Throwback: The 5 Best Hosts of Season 41

Welcome to a new segment here on the TV Ratings Guide, SNL Throwback (because the name SNL Vintage was taken). This segment will feature SNL episodes of the past that match the episode's theme. This week, I'll take on SNL Season 41, a solid season of SNL with some notable bumps in the road. Here's the 5 best hosts of the season, plus a few honorable mentions.

5) Fred Armisen
Choosing an SNL cast member or experienced host to close the season is always smart. Armies has been missed on the SNL stage, and it was great to see him back. It was also nice to see other old SNL cast members join him. I also loved the Harkin Brothers sketch, and it was a nice way to close the show.
Grade: B+
MVP: Kate McKinnon and Fred Armisen (tie)
Sketch of the Night: The Harkin Brothers

4) Tracy Morgan
I was so happy to see Tracy Morgan back on SNL. He was sorely missed, and it was great to see him after his accident. His episode was really good, and I loved seeing some of his old sketches return. Plus, the 30 Rock reunion was amazing.
Grade: A-
MVP: Tracy Morgan
Sketch of the Night: Brian Fellows (mostly for nostalgia)

3) Melissa McCarthy
Melissa McCarthy: The Person that's hosted 4 1/16 times. She's a reliably funny host who's down for pretty much anything. I's no wonder why she's been nominated for 4 Emmys. Hopefully she'll join the 5 Timers Club sooner rather than later.
Grade: A-
MVP: Melissa McCarthy
Sketch of the Night: Cold Open: Pick-Up Artist

2) Tina Fey & Amy Poehler
Tina Fey is always a reliable host. And Amy Poehler was great in her previous hosting gig. But I wasn't sure how the episode would be, because sometimes things go wrong. Fey's fifth hosting gig (and Poehler's second) was virtually flawless, and in a normal season would probably have been the best of the year, but this one is just a bit short.
Grade: A
MVP: Tina Fey
Sketch of the Night: Meet Your Second Wife

1) Donald Trump
I'm just messing with you. This might possibly have been the worst episode of SNL ever. I honestly think the writers gave up with this one. In the words of our POTUS-to-be: SAD!
Grade: F
MVP: People that did not tune in.
Sketch of the Night: The Commercials

And now for the real #1...
1) Ariana Grande
The hands-down best episode of the season (maybe of the 2010s) was hosted by Ariana Grande. This episode was so amazing. The cold open was probably the weak link of the episode, and even that was top-notch. Ariana Grande needs to get back to SNL and host right now, because something has gone horribly wrong this season, and we need a great host. Grande was great.

Grade: A+
MVP: Ariana Grande
Sketch of the Night: Everything but the Cold Open

Honorable Mentions:

Bernie Sanders Larry David:
This episode almost made the top 5, but just missed. It was really, really good. The segment with the real Bernie Sanders was fun, and Bern Your Enthusiasm may be the best political sketch of the 2016 cycle.
Grade: B+
MVP: Larry David
Sketch of the Night: Bern Your Enthusiasm

Julia Louis-Dreyfus:
This was a good episode, it just didn't make the cut. I laughed at a lot of these sketches. But, unlike the other shows on this list, this one had a few duds. The good moments mostly make up for the bad, though.
Grade: B
MVP: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Sketch of the Night: New Mercedes

Final Thoughts:
Notice a theme with all of my top picks? All but one are accomplished comedians, and all but one have been SNL cast members or SNL writers. But even Ariana Grande, who seems to be the odd woman out in the group, starred on a sitcom. I've come to the conclusion that SNL is truly at it's best when comedians host the show, because they've done comedy before, and they're good at it.

Scream Queens Series Premiere Review

Scream Queens Series Premiere Review

TV Guide
Hi, I'm Hunter and I will be reviewing Scream Queens this season, unless either I give up on the show because I don't like it or it is pulled from the schedule. I don't expect either of those to happen, though, so here is my first of hopefully many reviews of Scream Queens!

And, of course, spoilers from the first two episodes ahead!

The internet has been very ready for Scream Queens to premiere. It is sure to be popular due to the popularity of series creator Ryan Murphy and many of the series stars' popularity. But is it any good? After watching the trailer I thought this could be good, so I decided I would check it out, and here are my thoughts.

S1E1 "Pilot"

The first episode started out in 1995, where during a party at a sorority, a girl who didn't even know that she was pregnant gave birth. Except for one girl, the other girls in the sorority only cared about making sure the new mother and her baby didn't go downstairs to the party. The other girl stayed with the mother and child, and later the mother was dead. This beginning seemed a little bit odd to me, with a lot of things not making much sense like the unknown pregnancy and the random death of the mother. But, then, we skip ahead to 2015.

The show has a huge cast, for now at least, so it took a while to introduce all of the characters. There are three characters that seem to be the most important to me. Obviously, one of them is Emma Roberts's character Chanel, the president of the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority. She sees herself as queen over everyone else she meets, though flashbacks reveal she was not always this way. The previous president of the sorority treated her cruely, and Chanel appeared to have a much lower self-esteem. The second character is Jamie Lee Curtis's Cathy, the dean of the university. She hates the sorority system, and it is revealed that despite what her life looks like on the outside, her life is a mess. Both of these characters are shown to be very complicated, unlike the other, the sweet freshman Grace, who wants to be in Kappa because her mother, who she never knew, was, and one of the few pictures she has of her mother is of her in the sorority and she looks very happy in the picture. Chanel sees Grace as the next president of the sorority, and wants to shape her to be like her, but Grace is not interested in being Chanel #6, she wants the sorority to be what it is really supposed to be about, sisterhood.

The first episode also does a great job leaving little hints along the way. Could Chanel have killed the previous Kappa president? Could Cathy have killed the previous dean? The show hints at these being possibilities, but obviously doesn't plan on answering either of those questions yet. The show is also not afraid to kill off characters, as evidenced by the murder of Chanel #2 (Ariana Grande). This show does a great job at being scary.

But, scary is not the only thing the show does well. I think that the best part of the show is how funny it is. It's like one big satire on culture of the 2010s. The obvious highlight of the first episode was when #2 and the Red Devil were texting each other, a scene as hilarious as they come. They are standing in front of each other, yet instead of talking, the text. Then, they dance, the Red Devil says he or she is going to kill #2 to which she responds, in a text, with "wait, what???". After momentarily escaping the Red Devil after she was stabbed in the shoulder, #2 types up a message on some sort of social media website, but before she can hit send, she is killed. Luckily, she is able to momentarily come back to life to hit send, which makes no sense but was totally worth it.

One thing that I couldn't help but notice was the show's similarities to the ABC sitcom Suburgatory. It's like a scary version of that show; Grace is very similar to Tessa, and Chanel is like a psycho Dalia. Both shows have a similar sort of humor, the biggest difference is Scream Queens is outrageous and scary, while Suburgatory was more realistic and normal.

At the end of the first episode, my guess is that the Red Devil is either Chanel or Cathy. Both are very complicated characters, and it is hinted that they are each responsible for past murders. At this point, the only people we can cross off though are #2, because she was killed by the Red Devil, and the new pledges, minus Grace, as they were there as one of them, "Deaf Taylor Swift", was killed by the Red Devil on a lawnmower. The show could also pull a big twist and Grace could be the Red Devil, but the show would have to put a lot of work into convincing me of that one.

S1E2 "Hell Week"

The second episode started with an awesome narration from Cathy. The Chanels needed to get rid of #2's body. Neckbrace showed up and came up with ways to dispose of the body. The security guard then showed up and she was hilarious. She didn't have a gun or anything and it was a complicated process that she said how to get a hold of her. Grace went to the basement to get soap and she discovered a locked door behind a shelf. Suddenly, one of the Chanels showed up and told Grace that only Chanel has the key.

Cathy met with Grace's dad and tried to seduce him, and during that scene, she seemed very suspicious, as she really wanted Grace to stay living on campus and how she said she could guarantee that Grace would not be targeted. Grace went snooping in the basement again and Chanel told her the myth of the death from twenty years ago, the one that started out the first episode. In the flashback shown here, Cathy showed up, and she knew about the death. She is seeming very suspicious right now.

Chanel broke up with Chad, and then Chad's friend, who is apparently gay, wanted to get in bed with him. But, Chanel went back to Chad, and it looked to her like the two were having sex. Then he broke up with her, because, as he says, she can't handle that everyone, which apparently includes animals and probably plants, wants to have sex with him. After that, Grace's love interest went searching for things, and the red devil caught him, but instead of killing him, he just knocked him out. Then, Grace discovered the red devil suit in his closet. Is he being framed or is he working with someone else?

Nick Jonas's gay character told Chanel that he wants to join Kappa and Chanel supports the idea because it will help her with the gays in her future career. I enjoy Chanel logic, it's entertaining. Later, the red devil showed up in Chanel's room (or at least that's what she said) and all the Kappa girls went to the room to get the killer, but the security guard insisted that was crazy, something she was very right about. Then the red devil killed her guard friend. Since Cathy was seen outside right before the red devil showed up, I think that she is behind it. But that could also be what the show wants us to think, and it could be someone completely different.

I was then thinking about which people could potentially be the red devil. I was thinking that Nick Jonas's character could be it, but then guess what, he dies next. Other guys found him laying on a table with his throat slit and they screamed like the Kappa girls. But then the red devil went to the morgue and pulled him out, he wasn't really dead. He is obviously behind this in some way now, but who is working with him? This show is going to really keep us guessing until the end and I think that we are going to be shocked at the end of the season.

There are a lot of funny moments in Scream Queens and it has proven in these two episodes to be both thrilling and crazy. I enjoyed the first episode more than I thought I would, it was good, and the second episode was really good. I am very excited for the rest of the season.

What did you think of the two-hour premiere of Scream Queens? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
