FOX Renew/Cancel: The Resident is Likely to be Canceled, Ownership Definitely Won’t Save Almost Family

Welcome to the FOX Renew/Cancel column, and for the most part, some changes are coming to the prediction table. Here are this week's predictions!

The Resident: Honestly, I'm torn about The Resident's chances for renewal. On the one hand, The Resident is doing fine, and a 0.7 is borderline and somewhat solid ratings for FOX. However, FOX does not own the show, Disney does through 20th Television. That alone makes it a negative indicator for renewal. It's likely to be canceled, but I'm not going to write it off completely for a renewal. I'll wait and see how the midseason dramas fare.

Almost Family: With the midseason dramas, the same cannot be said about Almost Family. Although FOX has a co-ownership stake with Disney on the show, a reality show and three other dramas are waiting in the bench. Ownership is definitely not going to save Almost Family, especially since FOX did not order any more episodes of the show. There's a small chance The Resident may make it to next year, but there is no chance Almost Family will. It's still certain to be canceled.

FOX Renew/Cancel: Almost Family is Still Certain to be Canceled, While Animated Shows are Certain to be Renewed

Welcome to the FOX Renew/Cancel columns, where scripted show fates are predicted whether they are renewed or canceled. I took a week off last week due to the World Series, and I am back to predicting this week. This week, two shows got upgraded, while one show's prediction despite getting capped is getting more obvious. Thank the search engine optimization folks! Here is the updated table.

Almost Family: As it becomes even more blatantly obvious that Almost Family is certain to be canceled, FOX announced that it won't be ordering any more episodes by announcing the midseason schedule. Almost Family was nowhere to be found on the schedule. So it will be finishing its initial order before February rolls around. This should come as no surprise for the lowest rated rookie on FOX with many sites already calling it canceled. We may need to order the defacto canceled category soon.

Bob's Burgers and Family Guy: While some may say that both shows are defacto renewed, these shows have not officially been announced as renewed yet. With the renewal of Bless the Harts, and the ramping up of animation, I don't expect Bob's Burgers or Family Guy to get canceled any time soon. With the lower renewal bar, both shows easily clear that. Family Guy and Bob's Burgers earn an upgrade to certain to be renewed.

FOX Renew/Cancel: Prodigal Son is Likely to be Renewed, Might The Resident Move to ABC?

Welcome to the FOX Renew/Cancel column. It's week 3 for the FOX shows, and things are changing so much, I had to abandon one rule when deciding on FOX shows in the New Fox era. Another show received a full season pickup this week. Here are this week's predictions.

Prodigal Son: Let's start with the show in the headline. Although Prodigal Son ticked down to a still solid 0.9 this week, it scored a full season pickup this week, bringing the total number of episodes to 22. Another factor that led me to upgrade the show is that FOX Entertainment co-owns the show along with Warner Bros. That may help its case in the coming weeks and months. Prodigal Son is now likely to be renewed.

The Resident: Now that I analyzed the situation with The Resident further, I decided to downgrade it to leans cancelation. A 0.7 is not bad for a veteran, but it is not great. The only way The Resident will sneak in a renewal and satisfy the third season rule is if Disney will significantly lower the license fee for FOX to even air it because it is unowned. The same thing may apply to Last Man Standing later on, but that's coming midseason. The Resident, as of right now, is looking to be this year's Star. But the question is, might The Resident move to ABC? At this point, it's not likely. But stranger things have happened. Brooklyn Nine-Nine got moved to NBC after FOX canceled the show. Many years ago, Medium moved to CBS after airing on NBC for many years. The Mindy Project moved to streaming site Hulu for the next three seasons. Cougar Town and American Dad both moved to TBS. A show moving networks has happened before, but it is rare for a show to move to another broadcast network. We may analyze this further on down the line.

Bless the Harts: Bless the Harts did not go up that much after a football-fueled The Simpsons. It was at a 1.3. It's a solid number, but retention is terrible for it. With only 13 episodes, it is looking like another Son of Zorn. Bless the Harts now leans cancelation. Don't be surprised if Duncanville or The Great North shows up midseason to replace it.

Almost Family: Almost Family adjusted down for a second week in a row to a 0.7 in the key demo with less than 1 million viewers. I don't know what that means, but that screams the show is dead. It's nowhere to be found in the Live+3 ratings last week. It wasn't even in the top 40. Almost Family is certain to be canceled now, but it not a question of the act of getting pulled, it's how long the show will last.

FOX Renew/Cancel: Almost Family is Likely to be Canceled, More News on The Resident

Almost Family: On premiere night, Almost Family premiered to a 0.8 out of a 1.9 from The Masked Singer in the preliminary results. On the surface, this does not look bad. But on FOX's drama department, the network could have expected better. 42% retention from the prelims is not a great start. Not to mention, it premiered worse than Prodigal Son. That, combined with the deep bench in dramas, Almost Family starts as likely to be canceled.

Prodigal Son: In week 2, Prodigal Son was stable in the demo after 9-1-1. While I'm still not sure that it will hold at that number after 9-1-1 takes a break, I'm confident that this will get an episode extension. It now leans renewal.

Bless the Harts: In the middle of a collapsing Animation Domination lineup, Bless the Harts started out at a 0.7 in the demo. Considering the lineup, it was not bad at all. But we need to see the numbers after football and without to tell a clearer picture. Right now, it leans renewal. But only time will tell on whether it stays at renewable levels.

The Resident: Tuesday night's 0.7 rating made me raise some eyebrows, considering that the Tuesday move hurt the show. But as I will say again, The Resident is in season 3. FOX, rarely, if ever, cancels shows after season 3 unless either a show has terrible ratings (The Exorcist, The Mindy Project) or high production costs (Star). Right now, The Resident shows very little evidence of this except for that it dropped a tenth. I'll analyze this more down the line, but for now, it is likely to be renewed, and won't go any lower than leans renewal this season.

FOX Renew/Cancel: Prodigal Son Already Leaning Towards Cancelation, It’s This Year’s The Passage

Welcome to the first FOX Renew/Cancel post of the 2019-20 season. As you know, it is week 1, and many predictions will be changed. For the shows that are not premiering until week 2, I still have them at preseason predictions. These shows are marked with an asterisk, as noted in the table below. Although it is unlikely things will change after this week, I'll have more clarity when all the shows return by week 2. Here's the table below.

9-1-1: As I've said on the preseason prediction post, 9-1-1 is certain to be renewed. The 1.6 premiere last night will likely mark it as the highest rated scripted show on the lineup. With that rating, there is no way FOX will cancel the show this season, given that it is in season 3.

Prodigal Son: Now, to the main headline. Prodigal Son premiered to a 1.0 last night after 9-1-1. That is not a bad rating by any means. It was the only other show that was not fractional last night. However, that is below last season's The Passage, which started out okay and then dropped. It's week one, and it will likely drop. With new management at FOX, that may not cut it. I have it at leans cancelation for now, as we have Filthy Rich, neXt, 9-1-1: Lone Star, and Deputy waiting on the bench.

The Resident: Why doesn't this show have an asterisk? It's also a third season show. And it's the only show this week that is premiering (other than The Masked Singer, but that's unscripted) with a fate that hasn't been determined. It's conceivable that FOX may cancel the show this year as it has done in the past with third season shows, but for now, it is unlikely. The Resident is likely to be renewed.
