Below are Power Rankings for every primetime cable news program that aired regularly on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, Newsmax, and NewsNation in 2023. The rankings take into account a program’s average total viewers, average viewers aged 25-54, and perceived value to their respective network. The ratings are measured from December 26, 2022 through December 31, 2023 and exclude specials and coverage of breaking news. These ratings were first reported by AdWeek.

Power Rankings
1. Jesse Watters Primetime
Jesse Watters Primetime was not the highest-rated prime time cable news program in 2023; it ranked #2 in total viewers and #4 in the key Adults 25-54 demo. Its strength comes in its ability to stop Fox News’ ratings free-fall in the spring, when they suddenly canceled Tucker Carlson Tonight. Fox News’ ratings were collapsing in the early days of Carlson’s exit, with Watters out on vacation and immediate successor Fox News Tonight failing to gain traction no matter who they placed behind the anchor desk. Fox News’ ratings started to show some growth when Jesse Watters returned to his own show, paving the way for the show’s move to 8 pm. Jesse Watters doesn’t bring in the same ratings as Tucker Carlson, but he’s also largely stayed out of headlines and likely anchors a more profitable hour for the network. After all, Fox News is a business and as seen with the cancelation of Tucker Carlson Tonight, no viewership number can make up for a loss in revenue. Fox News clearly did not think to keep Tucker Carlson around as a “loss leader,” and have Jesse Watters Primetime to thank for stopping some of the bleeding.
2. Tucker Carlson Tonight
If Tucker Carlson Tonight aired the entire year and maintained the ratings it was getting, it easily would’ve been #1 on the Power Rankings. It had a healthy lead in total viewers and had nearly 65% more Adults 25-54 viewers than the next-highest-rated show. Tucker Carlson Tonight drew an audience that other shows simply cannot match, with a divisive host beloved by many in the American political right and loathed by many in the American political left. Tucker Carlson was known to be in the news just as much as he was known to report and discuss it; lawsuits against the host and companies unwilling to advertise during his hour led to the show’s sudden cancelation in April. Fox News had a great deal of trouble replacing Tucker Carlson Tonight, with original replacement Fox News Tonight flopping out of the gate and declining from there. Fox News eventually found a schedule that’s been by and large working out for them, but it involved cutting down on their nightly programming. While it may seem unfair to rank a show #2 in the Power Rankings when it only aired for four months, the negative impact Tucker Carlson Tonight had on Fox News’ schedule by *not* airing warrants it remaining in a high position.
3. Hannity
When Fox News announced they were reshuffling their primetime lineup in June, there was one time slot that stayed the same: Hannity remained at 9 pm. It has to count for something that Fox News was unwilling to move the series from its usual 9 pm time slot, perhaps due to viewer and/or advertiser satisfaction, or perhaps due to the town halls Hannity oftentimes hosts in the hour. Regardless, Hannity’s ratings were rather healthy in 2023, coming in 4th place in total viewers and 2nd in the key A25-54 demo. There was speculation on if Fox News’ nearly $800 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems would have an effect on Hannity’s future, but that talk his since long subsided. Hannity is still a reliable part of Fox News’ schedule, with host Sean Hannity hosting multiple town halls with former President and current presidential candidate Donald Trump. He’s also made acquaintances across the aisle in 2023, hosting a town hall with former Democratic candidate and current Independent candidate for president Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, as well as interviewing California governor Gavin Newsom. For yet another year, Hannity has viewers. It’s a major reason why you’ll see a Democrat like Newsom on Hannity and not a similarly-ambitious Republican on the competing Alex Wagner Tonight.
4. Gutfeld!
Gutfeld! is different from other prime time cable news programs in that it is taped in advance. The talk show is hosted by The Five co-panelist and libertarian comedian Greg Gutfeld. Originally airing at 11 pm, Gutfeld! gained attention for its ability to compete with the late-night series on broadcast television. Over the course of the year, Gutfeld! came in 6th place among prime time cable news programs in total viewers and 3rd place in the key A25-54 demo. When Fox News reshuffled their schedule in the summer, Gutfeld! moved to 10 pm. While this means it no longer gets to compete with traditional late night series, it also means Fox News is entrusting Gutfeld! with a higher priority time slot. However, Fox News is yet to turn to a live edition of Gutfeld! whenever there is major developing news coverage, instead typically preempting the program in favor of a second hour of Hannity. Given those preemptions, it’s tough to warrant placing Gutfeld! any higher in the Power Rankings than where it is now.
5. The Ingraham Angle
The Ingraham Angle ranked 5th place in 2023 among all prime time cable news programs in total viewers and 6th place in the key A25-54 demo. It’s not hosted by a co-anchor of the network’s high-rated evening roundtable panel show The Five like Jesse Watters Primetime or Gutfeld!, nor does its anchor hold frequent town halls and interviews like Hannity. The Ingraham Angle moved from its usual 10 pm time slot to 7 pm in the summer, a time slot that was giving the network many ratings woes in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. While it’s not as strong a show as Jesse Watters Primetime, The Ingraham Angle demonstrated an ability to draw an audience in the hour, all while allowing Jesse Watters Primetime to take over the vacant 8 pm time slot.
6. All In with Chris Hayes
All In with Chris Hayes came in 8th place in the key A25-54 demo among all prime time cable news programs in 2023, making it the highest-rated non-Fox News show in the demo to air every weekday. It ranked in 9th in total viewers, making it the 3rd-most-watched non-Fox News program and the 2nd-most-watched to air every weekday. All In with Chris Hayes does this despite going up against stronger competition than its counterparts. Airing at 8 pm, Chris Hayes competes with CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 for left-leaning viewers; the subsequent hours on CNN’s schedule are less competitive. All In with Chris Hayes is far from MSNBC’s answer to Tucker Carlson Tonight or even Jesse Watters Primetime, but it allows MSNBC to claim a ratings win over CNN’s most recognizable anchor.
7. Anderson Cooper 360
Anderson Cooper 360 has the distinction of being both the highest-ranked CNN program in the Power Rankings, and the lowest-ranked 8 pm program on either Fox News, CNN, or MSNBC. It ranked 14th in total viewers in 2023 and 9th in the key A25-54 demo, ahead of all other programs on CNN but behind its time slot competition on Fox News and MSNBC. Despite Anderson Cooper 360 being the longest-running prime time cable news program, airing over 1,500 episodes since its premiere in 2003, it has struggled to compete with the programs on Fox News and MSNBC in total viewers. In fact, nearly double the viewers tuned into All In with Chris Hayes on average than Anderson Cooper 360 in 2023. The gap was much closer in the key A25-54 demo, with Anderson Cooper only 3,000 viewers behind. Still, one not following ratings would expect Anderson Cooper 360 to be a bit higher-rated. It still gets a rather high ranking in the Power Rankings due to its value on CNN. The network has had trouble filling out the time slots following Cooper’s, so they can’t take for granted his continued presence with ratings that are relatively high for their standards. In fact, they even expanded his show at one point, airing it at both 8 pm and 9 pm early in 2023.
8. The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell
Like CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell is a program that MSNBC should not be taking for granted. Airing at 10 pm, it’s been on the air since 2010 on a network that’s recently seen changes at both 9 pm and 11 pm. It crushes it’s CNN competition in total viewers, coming in 8th place and averaging nearly triple the total viewers. It comes in 12th in the key A25-54 demo, not nearly as far ahead as CNN but still with a comfortable lead. The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell may not get the press that Fox News’ 10 pm program Gutfeld! gets, but it’s one of MSNBC’s higher-rated hours and fends off its competition on CNN. Ultimately, the latter is what matters.
9. Rachel Maddow Show
Rachel Maddow Show is one of the highest-rated programs on cable news in 2023, coming in third place in total viewers among all primetime programs and fifth place in the key A25-54 demo. It’s far ahead of all other shows on MSNBC, never mind those on CNN. It also has more total viewers than every series on Fox News that is currently running except for Jesse Watters Primetime. That includes Hannity, its time slot competition. The reason it ranks ninth in the Power Rankings is because it only airs once a week. For context, Rachel Maddow signed a $30 million per year deal with MSNBC in August 2021 to extend her contract with the network through the 2024 presidential election. Maddow negotiated her show go down to airing just one night a week as part of the deal, taking on other duties instead. As such, Rachel Maddow Show only had value to MSNBC on Mondays in 2023, which is not enough to warrant ranking it as high as the average ratings indicate.
10. Erin Burnett OutFront
Erin Burnett OutFront did not rank in the Top 10 in neither total viewers nor the key A25-54 demo. Rather, it came in 15th in total viewers and 11th in the demo. Its strength comes from its relative power on CNN. Airing at 7 pm, Erin Burnett OutFront provides solid ratings to start off primetime, something desperately needed on a network that’s been going through a transition period. In the demo, it’s not far away from being CNN’s most-viewed show, with just 3,000 less viewers than Anderson Cooper 360. While it fails to compete with MSNBC’s The ReidOut in total viewers, it beats it in the key demo. Erin Burnett OutFront had a brief stint at 9 pm in February as CNN searched for a new occupant for the hour. Perhaps with more time, they could have found it to be a suitable full-time solution to the vacant hour. Instead, it went back to its usual 7 pm time slot after a week, where it pulls in solid ratings not to be undervalued.
11. Fox News At Night
Fox News At Night is a very low-priority show for Fox News, but it still serves a purpose. First airing at midnight and later pushed forward to 11 pm, Fox News at Night is the only show in prime time from any cable network’s news division, rather than from an opinion host. Fox News had a tumultuous beginning to 2023, due to its settlement with Dominion Voting Systems and subsequent cancelation of Tucker Carlson Tonight. Throughout it all, it could rely on Fox News At Night to be the news-oriented program to close out their lineup. It ranked 13th in total viewers and 7th in the key A25-54 demo, putting it at the bottom of the pack for shows that aired year-round for Fox News. However, it beat out the 11 pm programs on MSNBC and CNN, two networks that never even bothered to try airing first-run programming at midnight. Given how The Story with Martha McCallum’s ratings collapsed to the point where it had to move to the afternoon after the 2020 election, the fact Fox News can rely on any program airing from a non-opinion host after the evening hours is a notable achievement.
12. Alex Wagner Tonight
Alex Wagner Tonight is the newest edition to MSNBC’s primetime lineup, airing in the 9 pm time slot since August 2022 on weekdays that aren’t Mondays. One can make a valid argument for and against the notion that Alex Wagner Tonight is a successful addition to the lineup, with the reasoning to both being that its ratings are right in line with those of the rest of the lineup’s. It ranks 10th in total viewers among all prime time cable news programs, and 13th in the key A25-54 demo. This is far weaker than Rachel Maddow Show’s ratings in the same time slot on Mondays. It’s to be expected that Alex Wagner Tonight isn’t going to perform in line with something as high-rated as Rachel Maddow Show, but is performing in line with the rest of the lineup really the standard? For what it’s worth, it does beat out CNN in both total viewers and A25-54 viewers, and MSNBC would way rather have a show that fits in with the lineup than sticks out like a sore thumb. If they’re looking for the next Rachel Maddow, they’re not finding it in Alex Wagner. However, the transition away from Rachel Maddow Show arguably could’ve gone much worse.
13. The ReidOut
MSNBC in general has gone through a prime time overhaul in the 2020s. The ReidOut, which airs at 7 pm, premiered in July 2020 and is already the third-longest-running prime time weekday program on the network (excluding Mondays). The ratings indicate that MSNBC has made a much smoother transition to a new schedule than CNN. The ReidOut ranks 11th in total viewers, a bit below its non-11 pm counterparts, and 14th in the key A25-54 demo, just a tad under The Last Word and Alex Wagner Tonight. It’s not the strongest of shows for MSNBC; it’s the only hour on their primetime schedule to lose to its time slot competition on CNN in the key demo. MSNBC could try fixing that with a new series, but the demo loss is narrow and they risk a further loss with the wrong program.
14. The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle
The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle is another rather new series on MSNBC, premiering in early 2022. In 2023, it ranked 12th in total viewers for primetime weekday cable news programs, and 18th in the key A25-54 demo. That puts it squarely in last place in both metrics for MSNBC programs, but gets the benefit of the doubt from airing at 11 pm. The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle does manage to out-rate its time slot competition on CNN, fairly narrowly in the demo but more than doubling it in total viewers. Like with The ReidOut, The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle isn’t MSNBC’s strongest program, nor is it expected to be. It’s a solid edition to the lineup, and closes out a lineup without any true weak spots. Due in part to this, MSNBC was able to end 2023 with the same primetime schedule they started it with, something that can’t be said for CNN or Fox News.
15. CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip
CNN closed out 2023 with CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip airing at 10 pm, a show which premiered in October. CNN is hoping for it to be the long-term solution to the hole in their schedule left not from the firing of former CNN Tonight host Don Lemon, but from moving him to their morning show. So far, CNN NewsNight is performing pretty mediocre, coming in 18th place in total viewers and 16th place in the key A25-54 demo among all weekday primetime cable news programs. One bright spot is it’s not far behind its lead-in in the key demo. Another is that it edges out the old 9 pm occupant, CNN Primetime, in the demo. However, it gets crushed in total viewers by MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, which it also loses to in the demo. No fair comparison can be made between it and former time slot occupant CNN Tonight, which ran for two hours and naturally was lower-rated due to the 11 pm hour. CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip does not come from out of nowhere, as the network turned to the anchor’s opinion fairly often in the analysis of the 2020 presidential election. Perhaps as time goes on, CNN NewsNight can find its footing.
16. Laura Coates Live
Like CNN NewsNight, Laura Coates Live premiered on CNN in October 2023. It airs at 11 pm, meaning the CNN Tonight brand has been put on pause in favor of two new series. Coates was one of two anchors of CNN Tonight in 2023 before the creation of Laura Coates Live, a risk for a network already experiencing ratings woes. Laura Coates Live is CNN’s least-viewed primetime weekday program of 2023, coming in 20th place overall. It’s their second-lowest-rated in the key A25-54 demo, coming in 19th place overall. The reason it gets bumped up a few spots in the Power Rankings is how its ratings compare to those of CNN Tonight. Laura Coates Live on average had just 10,000 less total viewers than CNN Tonight in 2023 and 3,000 more viewers aged 25-54. This is remarkable given CNN Tonight aired from 10 pm to midnight, while Laura Coates Live only airs from 11 pm to midnight. It’s not a high-profile show for CNN, and it loses to its time slot competition, but it’s clearly showing some promise. Plus, the gap in demo viewers between it and MSNBC’s The 11th Hour is only 14,000 viewers, one that can easily be closed with time.
17. The Source with Kaitlan Collins
The Source with Kaitlan Collins was picked as CNN’s new 9 pm program in summer 2023, and premiered in July. CNN had been on a meticulous search for the successor to Cuomo Prime Time, which they canceled in November 2021, and clearly hoped The Source with Kaitlan Collins would be just that. Picking Collins as the host wasn’t much of a surprise, as she was given plenty of airtime by the network as a correspondent in the years leading up to the premiere, and was the former co-anchor of CNN This Morning. She also hosted a high-profile town hall with Donald Trump in May 2023. Unfortunately for Collins, she didn’t have the breakout moment in that town hall she was likely hoping for, instead becoming a foe of the former president and current presidential candidate. The Source is having a tough time holding Anderson Cooper 360’s audience, coming in 16th place overall in total viewers and 15th place in the key demo. CNN has lower-rated shows, but are these really their expectations after spending so long searching for a 9 pm program? At least it’s rating higher than CNN Primetime, signaling picking Collins as the permanent host has greater returns than sticking with the rotating host format.
18. CNN Primetime
With how long it took CNN to find a long-term 9 pm anchor, you’d think CNN Primetime was a ratings success. It bled a fair amount of its Anderson Cooper 360 lead-in, ranking 19th in total viewers and 17th in the key A25-54 demo. CNN failed to act quickly in replacing Chris Cuomo, resulting in their current position. They arguably should have picked a 9 pm anchor a long time ago, rather than creating CNN Primetime in February with rotating anchors. The program’s run was mostly unremarkable, losing to MSNBC in both total viewers and the key A25-54 demo. The Source with Kaitlan Collins isn’t doing a whole lot better, but its improvement still demonstrates viewers’ desire to see a permanent anchor in the time slot. CNN Primetime could not provide this.
19. CNN Tonight
In 2023, CNN Tonight ranked 19th in total viewers among weekday primetime cable news programs and 20th in the key A25-54 demo. That means it came in last place on CNN in the demo, and narrowly avoided last place in total viewers. Hosted by Alisyn Camerota and Lara Coates, CNN Tonight did not make it through 2023 alive, instead being replaced by CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip and Laura Coates Live. It also lost a good chunk of its 9 pm lead-in’s audience in both total viewers and the A25-54 demo, and placed behind its competition on MSNBC. Needless to say, the CNN Tonight brand struggled in 2023. With not all that much going for it, CNN Tonight comes toward the bottom of the pack in the Power Rankings of programs airing on CNN, MSNBC, or Fox News.
20. Fox News Tonight
Fox News Tonight averaged seventh place in total viewers among all weekday primetime cable news programs, and tenth in the key A25-54 demo. That’s far ahead of its #20 Power Ranking. Fox News Tonight is behind every other show on Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC in the Power Rankings because of just how much destruction its short run caused to Fox News’ schedule. It abruptly took over for Tucker Carlson Tonight and featured a rotating anchor, all of whom were well-known presences on the network. Not only did Fox News Tonight pull in just a fraction of Tucker Carlson Tonight’s ratings, it brought down the rest of the night with it. Ultimately, Fox News opted to yank Fox News Tonight from the air and simply condense their nightly programming from six hours to five hours. Fox News maintains its ratings lead today due in part to the network’s quick action in giving up on Fox News Tonight before it could do any more damage, rather than dragging on the search for a permanent anchor. Given it still soared above everything on Newsmax and NewsNation in the ratings, it’s hard to justify a ranking lower than where it stands. Both networks long for ratings a third of its size. Plus, Fox News Tonight had to play the scapegoat as Tucker Carlson’s time slot replacement at a time when the anchor’s exit sparked a viewer boycott.
21. Eric Bolling The Balance
Coming in first for Newsmax and NewsNation shows in the Power Rankings, and 21st overall, is Newsmax’s Eric Bolling The Balance. It ranks #22 in total viewers, making it Newsmax’s second-most-viewed weekday primetime program, and #21 in the key A25-54 demo, out-rating everything else on the network. It does this while catering to a right-wing audience in the 8 pm time slot, facing more competition from Fox News than its counterparts. A longtime former presence on Fox News himself, Bolling ironically now competes for viewers with Jesse Watters, who replaced him on Fox News’s evening program The Five. Bolling is losing badly in that matchup, and understandably so given Newsmax’s lower viewing levels in general. To be Newsmax’s highest-rated show in the key A25-54 demo, even airing in that time slot, warrants it to outperform the network’s other programs in the Power Rankings.
22. Rob Schmitt Tonight
Newsmax’s 7 pm program, Rob Schmitt Tonight, is comfortably the network’s most-viewed program on average and finished only a tad lower than Eric Bolling The Balance in the key A25-54 demo. Overall it came in 21st in total viewers and 22nd in the demo. Newsmax has historically found a fair amount of success in this hour relative to the rest of the night, especially in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election when network viewership peaked. Rob Schmitt Tonight doesn’t have to face as much competition as Eric Bolling The Balance, which is why it ranks below Bolling’s program. It does enjoy healthy ratings for Newsmax’s standards though, and leads off primetime by providing a solid launchpad for the rest of the night.
23. Cuomo
Cuomo premiered on NewsNation in October 2022, and ever since has arguably remained their highest-profile show. It’s anchored by Chris Cuomo, former host of CNN’s Cuomo Prime Time before his firing in 2021, and draws higher ratings than any other NewsNation series in both total viewers and the key A25-54 demo. It has a healthy lead over the rest of the NewsNation lineup in total viewers, and a more modest yet still sizable lead in the demo. That being said, NewsNation still struggles as a network, with Cuomo getting less total viewers on average than any primetime weekday program on Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, or Newsmax. It also loses to all but one primetime program on the other four networks in the key demo. Cuomo’s rank above a couple Newsmax programs with more total viewers comes from its value to NewsNation. Cuomo brings in higher ratings than NewsNation likely would’ve seen with a less-known anchor, which shouldn’t be taken for granted on a network running behind the others in the ratings.
24. Greg Kelly Reports
Greg Kelly Reports used to be Newsmax’s highest-rated series. In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, it was competitive with Fox News’ The Story in the 7 pm hour, at times out-rating it head-to-head. Since then, Greg Kelly Reports moved away from 7 pm and Newsmax stopped being remotely competitive with Fox News. Its current 9 pm is a tougher time slot for a Newsmax program than 7 pm, oftentimes going up against town halls broadcast by Fox News. Greg Kelly Reports ranks behind the 7 pm and 8 pm hours on Newsmax, coming in 23rd overall in both total viewers and the key A25-54 demo. These ratings arguably demonstrate Greg Kelly is no longer the star anchor he was once considered to be for Newsmax. On the bright side, his show still does comfortably out-rate his lead-out as well as everything on NewsNation.
25. Chris Plante The Right Squad
Currently closing out Newsmax’s primetime lineup in the 10 pm hour and formerly airing in the 9 pm hour is the panel series Chris Plante The Right Squad. Originally premiering in May 2023, it’s the network’s lowest-rated primetime program, coming in 24th overall in total viewers and 25h in the key A25-54 demo. It’s the only Newsmax demo to lose to a NewsNation program in the demo. The steady decline in viewership throughout primetime is also likely a reason why Newsmax does not bother to air first-run programming at 11 pm. It closes out a lineup for Newsmax that brings diminishing returns as the night progresses. Most troublesome for Chris Plante The Right Squad is how far behind it is from the other Newsmax primetime programs in the key demo; while everything else is between 26 and 29,000 viewers aged 25 to 54, Chris Plante The Right Squad averages just 22,000 viewers in that age group. It’s not a complete flop, but it’s the weakest of Newsmax’s primetime programs in the ratings.
26. Banfield
Banfield’s audience size, while small, shows signs of promise. Airing at 10 pm on NewsNation, Banfield ranks 27th overall in total viewers, holding a large portion of its lead-in’s viewers. More importantly, it actually grows from its lead-in on average in the key A25-54 demo. Banfield is the only 10 pm program across Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, Newsmax, and NewsNation to have a larger audience in the key demo than its respective network’s 9 pm program. It may help that Banfield differs from most other primetime cable news programs. In the vein of Larry King Live, Banfield features interviews with guests outside of politics. With a better time slot, perhaps its ratings could improve. For now, it’s tough to give a better ranking to a show that still finishes behind every Newsmax program in both total viewers and the A25-54 demo.
27. Dan Abrams Live
Dan Abrams Live airs at 9 pm on NewsNation, directly after their top-rated program Cuomo. Unfortunately for NewsNation, Dan Abrams Live does not take advantage of its lead-in, shedding roughly 30% of its total viewers and A25-54 demo audience. It comes in 27th place overall in both metrics, and loses to NewsNation’s 10 pm program in the key demo. Having a fairly weak program at 9 pm puts a dent in NewsNation’s hopes to grow into a major cable news station, and warrants Dan Abrams Live to be placed toward the bottom of the Power Rankings. NewsNation needs a program that can capitalize off the momentum started by Cuomo. One option as an experiment could be to switch time slots for Banfield and Dan Abrams Live.
28. On Balance with Leland Vittert
On Balance with Leland Vittert has the worst time slot of all shows in these Power Rankings, airing at 7 pm on NewsNation. That makes its poor performance understandable, but not fully excusable. NewsNation would likely be better off if they could provide something of a lead-in to Cuomo, potentially increasing the ratings of their flagship program even further. Even a small ratings bump for Cuomo would allow for it to compete with Newsmax’s higher-rated programs in the key A25-54 demo. With just 50,000 total viewers on average and 10,000 aged 25-54, On Balance with Leland Vittert is unable to provide this in the 7 pm time slot.
