Tuesday TV Ratings 5/30/23: Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge Has Decent Start, America’s Got Talent Premieres Near Low, Beat Shazam Goes Even Lower (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: NBC's 'America's Got Talent' (0.65) returned for season 18 in strong fashion, taking a light 14% dip when stacked up against last year's premiere (0.76). In the 10 p.m. slot, 'Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge' (0.33) had a rather middling launch. The new series only retained about half of its 'AGT' lead-in but still managed to top its hour. On ABC, 'The Game Show Show' (0.22, +0.03) ended its 4-episode run on Wednesday, despite airing on Tuesday for the three prior installments. Though the series picked up a few ticks on finale night, it trailed the reruns of 'Celebrity Family Feud' (0.35) and 'Celebrity Jeopardy!' (0.30) that aired before it. On Fox, 'Beat Shazam' (0.19, -0.03) and 'Don't Forget the Lyrics!' (0.20, -0.04) declined from premieres that were already lackluster. 'Superman & Lois' (0.12, +0.04) and 'Gotham Knights' (0.07, +0.02) bounced back on the CW. CBS went with repeats of 'FBI' (0.23), 'FBI: International' (0.22), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.21), losing a hundredth of a point in each hour as the night went on.

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary ratings.

Friday Cable Ratings 5/26/23: Power Book II: Ghost Hits Season High in Finale, Pardon the Interruption Leads Abysmal Night, CNN Tonight Tops Cable News

Monday TV Ratings 5/29/23: American Ninja Warrior: Women’s Championship OK, NASCAR Leads, The Rising Decent by CW Standards (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Fox's broadcast of the 'NASCAR Coca-Cola 600' (0.52) easily topped the night and was only half a point lower than last year's edition (0.57). Though not listed in the chart, the postgame coverage (0.41/0.31) tapered off significantly at 9. Viewers quickly fled from there as a 9:14 p.m. rerun of 'MasterChef' (0.16) disappointed for a 15-minute broadcast. At 9:30, the repeat of 'Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars' (0.14) went even lower. On NBC, the debut of the Women's Championship edition of 'American Ninja Warrior' (0.30) put up a decent number and led into a rerun of 'Weakest Link' (0.21). CBS had reruns of 'The Neighborhood' (0.23), 'Bob Hearts Abishola' (0.19), and 'A Grammy Salute to The Beach Boys' (0.17). ABC's trio of 'Celebrity Family Feud' reruns (0.36/0.31/0.27) performed markedly better than CBS's encores. The CW launched new dramas 'The Rising' (0.05) and 'Barons' (0.03). Neither was a breakout hit, but the netlet has clearly done worse in recent times.

Finals Update: The 8 PM repeat of 'Celebrity Family Feud' (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeat of 'Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars' (-0.1) adjusted down.

Summer Renew/Cancel Week 1: Is It Time for Beat Shazam to Beat It?

The Summer TV season is officially upon us, and we all know what that means: a deluge of unscripted programming as the networks go on autopilot until the fall (or even later for some networks this year), with abysmal ratings for just about everything outside of the long-running staples. Keep on reading to see my initial predictions for the few shows that have made their debuts this far.

Sunday TV Ratings 5/28/23: The Blacklist Rises, HouseBroken Sets New Low, 60 Minutes Repeat Leads Dismal Night (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Since most shows wrapped up their seasons a week or two ago, only two originals were shown on Sunday evening. The stronger of the two was NBC's 'The Blacklist' (0.19, +0.04). The 10-year old drama gained four-hundredths and tied the rerun of 'Magnum PI' (0.19) that led into it. Despite the growth in the back-half of the peacock network's night, the 7 p.m. repeat of 'Dateline' (0.23) bested both shows. The weaker of the two was Fox's 'HouseBroken' (0.09, -0.02). The cartoon sitcom lost two-hundredths and posted a putrid 0.09 rating for both the 9 p.m. episode and the 9:30 p.m. episode. This serves as a new low for the series, replacing the low (0.11) that it posted just last week. This result was so abysmal that even reruns of 'Don't Forget the Lyrics!' (0.14) and 'Beat Shazam' (0.11) were a good bit higher at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively. CBS went with encores of '60 Minutes' (0.31/0.24), 'Let's Make a Deal' (0.24), and 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.15). The 7 p.m. rerun of '60 Minutes' topped the night altogether. ABC had some solid repeats of 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (0.25/0.27) and a lackluster rerun marathon of 'The Conners' (0.15/0.13/0.12/0.11). The CW barely even registered at all in the Adults 18-49 demographic as repeats of '100 Days to Indy' (0.01) and 'The Great American Joke Off' (0.01) narrowly missed the dreaded 0.00 rating. The repeat of 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' (0.02) that aired in-between was a touch less embarrassing.

Finals Update: The 8 PM repeat of 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Saturday TV Ratings 5/27/23: NHL Playoffs Rise, MLB Down, 48 Hours Repeat is Top Non-Sports Program (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: ABC's broadcast of the NHL Playoffs (0.49) was the night's highest-rated telecast in the Adults 18-49 demographic and led the alphabet network to another Saturday win. On Fox, 'MLB: Regional Coverage' (0.31) was nearly a tenth lower than the week prior (0.40) but outrated everything on the non-ABC networks. In terms of non-sports programming, it was CBS's '48 Hours' rerun (0.16) that served as the highest-rated of the bunch. The newsmagazine series outpaced the encores of 'CSI: Vegas' (0.13) and 'Blue Bloods' (0.11) that aired before it. NBC had meager reruns of 'The Comedy and Music Superfest' (0.12) and 'Password' (0.12). The CW had repeats of 'Masters of Illusion' (0.03/0.03) and 'Totally Weird and Funny' (0.04/0.05).

Finals Update: 'NHL Playoffs: Stars v. Golden Knights' (+0.2) and 'MLB: Regional Coverage' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Friday TV Ratings 5/26/23: Star Trek Into Darkness Low, Soul of a Nation Special Weak, Declining WWE SmackDown Easily Leads (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Fox's 'WWE Smackdown' (0.52, -0.01) shed a hundredth but more than doubled all other competitors in the Adults 18-49 demographic on a particularly dull Friday evening. ABC's 'The New Face of Hollywood' special (0.20) (packaged under the "Soul of a Nation" branding) had a very dismal performance, so much so that the rerun of '20/20' (0.23) that followed outpaced it by a few ticks. But though the alphabet network struggled, it was CBS's broadcast of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' (0.15) that reached laughable levels. NBC was on slightly stronger footing than CBS with its reruns of 'That's My Jam' (0.23) and 'Dateline' (0.23). The CW's reruns of 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.07), 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' (0.06), and 'The Great American Joke Off' (0.05) performed about the same as first-run episodes do.

Finals Update: Repeats of 'That's My Jam' (-0.1) and 'Dateline NBC' (-0.1) adjusted down.

Thursday Cable Ratings 5/25/23: Top Chef Ties Season High, NBA Playoffs Slip, The Five Again Leads Cable News

Thursday TV Ratings 5/25/23: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Young Sheldon Rerun Tie For First On Repeat-Littered Night (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: On a night with almost nothing but reruns, ABC's broadcast of Marvel film 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' (0.28) and CBS's rerun of 'Young Sheldon' (0.28) tied for the top spot. The 8:30 p.m. rerun of 'Ghosts' (0.26) was close behind 'Sheldon', but repeats of 'So Help Me Todd' (0.18) and 'CSI: Vegas' (0.16) were a clear step below the sitcom encores. NBC went with reruns of 'The Wall' (0.21), 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.24), and 'Magnum PI' (0.16). Fox aired an encore of the pilot of 'Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars' (0.16) and a two-pack of 'Animal Control' reruns (0.13/0.14). The CW's '100 Days to Indy' (0.05, +0.03) was the lone original of the evening and seemed to benefit from that. The series rose by three-hundredths when compared to the week prior and grew from the 'Walker' rerun (0.04) that led into it.

Finals Update: The repeat of 'Ghosts' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Wednesday TV Ratings 5/24/23: Middling Premieres for Food Stars and MasterChef, The Prank Panel Posts Poor Retention of Rising Jeopardy! Masters, Survivor and Chicago Med Decline for Finales (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: On ABC, 'Jeopardy! Masters' (0.61, +0.04) finished strong on finale night and climbed to its third highest-rating of this cycle. The alphabet network tried to use 'Jeopardy!' to boost the series premiere of 'The Prank Panel' (0.30), but the latter failed to even retain half of its lead-in. At 10, 'The Game Show Show' (0.19, -0.09) crashed in week three, likely due to 'Prank Panel' being a good bit lower than the usual 'Celebrity Wheel'. CBS's 'Survivor' (0.69, -0.02) topped the night for its finale but dropped by two-hundredths on a week-to-week basis. Dramas 'Chicago Med' (0.44, -0.03) and 'Chicago PD' (0.45, -0.01) also dipped for their season closers on NBC. Sandwiched in-between, 'Chicago Fire' (0.49, 0.00) held steady and widened the gap between it and its companions. Fox was the only network with no finales, instead going with the season premiere of 'MasterChef' (0.33) and the series debut of 'Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars' (0.27). Though this was a pretty middling start for 'Food Stars', this debut night is certainly an improvement over Tuesday's 'Shazam'-'Lyrics' combo (0.22/0.24). On the CW, 'The Flash' (0.09, -0.01) ended its 9-season run in unremarkable fashion. The superhero drama shed a hundredth and led into a sinking edition of 'Riverdale' (0.04, -0.01). For 'Flash', this is a far far cry from the 1.9 rating it began its run with 9 years prior.

Finals Update: 'Survivor' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday Cable Ratings 5/23/23: NBA Playoffs Continue to Lead, NHL Playoffs Down, The Five Tops Cable News

Tuesday TV Ratings 5/23/23: The Voice Ticks Up for Blake Shelton’s Final Episode, Don’t Forget the Lyrics Builds on Abysmal Beat Shazam Premiere, FBI Shows End Down (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Airing after a clip show (0.34) of itself, NBC's 'The Voice' (0.49, +0.01) inched up for its final episode with judge Blake Shelton. When compared to its Monday night's telecast (0.48), the series improved by a single hundredth. The season finale of the singing-competition series placed second overall in the Adults 18-49 demographic, falling short of a rising edition of ABC's 'Jeopardy! Masters' (0.57, +0.03). 'Jeopardy!' grew by three-hundredths and was the highest-rated broadcast of the night but failed to keep the lead-out program afloat yet again. 9 p.m. occupant 'Judge Steve Harvey' (0.25, -0.02) only retained 44% of its 'Jeopardy!' lead-in and dipped to its lowest rating to date. In the 10 p.m. hour, a rerun of 'Celebrity Family Feud' (0.23) was able to slow the slide from there. CBS's 'FBI' (0.42, -0.03), 'FBI: International' (0.33, -0.07), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.33, -0.04) all dealt with noticeable declines on finale night. Fox got a head-start on summer programming, but the results were far from encouraging. 'Beat Shazam' (0.22) returned with a new series low for its first episode with new host Nick Cannon. At 9, 'Don't Forget the Lyrics!' (0.24) did its best to build on its lead-in but did not get very far. At the very least, the game show revival managed to avoid "new low" territory. In CW land, 'Superman & Lois' (0.08, -0.03) and 'Gotham Knights' (0.05, -0.03) shed three-hundredths apiece.

Finals Update: 'Jeopardy! Masters' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Monday TV Ratings 5/22/23: Bob Hearts Abishola Inches Up for Finale, The Neighborhood and NCIS Finales Drop, The Voice Sinks (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: CBS had an evening jam-packed with season finales, but only sitcom 'Bob Hearts Abishola' (0.39, +0.01) was able to secure any positive momentum. 'The Neighborhood' (0.48, -0.05), 'NCIS' (0.39, -0.05), and 'NCIS: Hawai'i' (0.29, -0.05) all lost half a point for their respective closers. On ABC, 'Jeopardy! Masters' (0.54, +0.04) topped the evening in its eight night, but a special 'Prisoners of the Snow' edition of '20/20' (0.25) retained less than half of the 'Jeopardy!' rating. Reality mainstay  'The Voice' (0.48, -0.07) took a noticeable hit on NBC and led into a rerun of 'That's My Jam' (0.25). Few tuned in for an encore of TMZ's "Britney Spears" special (0.14) on Fox and even fewer stuck around for repeats of 'Animal Control' (0.14/0.12). The CW had repeat showings of 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.06) and 'The Flash' (0.04).

Finals Update: 'The Voice' (+0.1) and 'The Neighborhood' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Sunday TV Ratings 5/21/23: NCIS: Los Angeles Rises for Series Finale, American Idol Ends Down, The Simpsons Ticks Up For Finale (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.37, +0.12) wrapped up its 14-season run in solid fashion on CBS. The long-running drama bowed out by growing to its highest rating in nearly three months and was followed by a retrospective special (0.27) that aired in the 10 p.m. hour. '60 Minutes' (0.49, +0.07) and 'The Equalizer' (0.48, +0.08) also managed to climb higher, with 'Equalizer' closing out its season with a rating that outpaced its last four episodes. ABC's 'American Idol' (0.83, -0.09) was down close to a tenth for its season finale. At 7, 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (0.39, -0.34) lost the NBA boost it had last week and came back down to earth as a result. On Fox, 'The Simpsons' (0.23, +0.01) picked up a hundredth for its finale while 'The Great North' (0.17, 0.00) held steady. In the 9 p.m. hour, 'Bob's Burgers' (0.19, -0.02) and 'HouseBroken' (0.11, -0.04) took a hit. Reruns of 'Simpsons' (0.09) and 'Bob's' (0.12) occupied the 7 p.m. hour. NBC had a repeat of 'Dateline' (0.23), an encore of 'Magnum PI' (0.15), and a stable edition of 'The Blacklist' (0.15, 0.00). Repeat showings of '100 Days to Indy' (0.02), 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' (0.03), and 'The Great American Joke Off' (0.03) underwhelmed on the CW.

Finals Update: 'American Idol' (+0.1), 'The Equalizer' (+0.1), and '60 Minutes' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Saturday TV Ratings 5/20/23: Rising NBA Playoffs Easily Lead, 48 Hours Also Up (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: The 'Nuggets v. Lakers' NBA playoffs game (2.58) helped ABC coast to an easy victory. The 8 p.m. 'NBA Countdown' broadcast (0.60) also bested every program not on the alphabet network. Fox's 'MLB Regional Coverage' (0.40) could not hold a candle to ABC but helped the network secure second-place in the Adults 18-49 demographic. NBC had reruns of 'The Wall' (0.24), 'Weakest Link' (0.19), and 'SNL' (0.19) (the latter stylized as 'SNL Vintage'). On CBS, reruns of 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.19) and '48 Hours' (0.18) occupied the 8-10 p.m. stretch. At 10, the original episode of '48 Hours' (0.23, +0.05) enjoyed a nice boost. 'Masters of Illusion' (0.04, +0.02) and 'Totally Weird and Funny' (0.03, +0.01) were both up on the CW.

Finals Update: 'NBA Playoffs: Nuggets v. Lakers' (+0.9) and 'MLB: Regional Coverage' (+0.1) adjusted up. 'NBA Countdown' (-0.2) adjusted down.

Friday TV Ratings 5/19/23: Shark Tank and SWAT Slip for Finales, Fire Country Ends Steady, Blue Bloods Higher on Finale Night (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Though it remains one of Friday's top shows, ABC's 'Shark Tank' (0.35, -0.02) closed out its season on a rather soft note. The unscripted staple declined by two-hundredths from its previous episode and only stayed two ticks above its season low. Following 'Tank', '20/20' (0.19, -0.09) unexpectedly crumbled to a new season low. On CBS, 'SWAT' (0.35, -0.01) shed a hundredth while 'Fire Country' (0.35, 0.00) held steady for its finale. At 10, 'Blue Bloods' (0.34, +0.06) shot up to its highest rating since early April, thus finishing the season in strong fashion. NBC went with a rerun of 'That's My Jam' (0.21) and a 'Dateline' original (0.30, +0.03) that trampled '20/20' head-on. Fox's 'WWE Smackdown' (0.53, -0.03) inched down but easily remained the evening's top program. Over on the CW, 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' (0.06, 0.00) held even but could only tie the repeat of 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.06) that led into it. 'The Great American Joke Off' (0.05, +0.01) picked up a precious hundredth at 9:30.

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary ratings.

Thursday TV Ratings 5/18/23: Organized Crime Jumps as SVU Slips for Crossover Finale, So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas Finales Sink, Young Sheldon Leads (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: CBS's 'Young Sheldon' (0.60/0.57) finished the season strong with a one-hour finale that rated higher than any episode since late March in the Adults 18-49 demographic. But even though 'Sheldon' topped the night altogether, it was unable to keep 'So Help Me Todd' (0.31, -0.11) afloat on finale night. 'Todd' lost more than a full tenth on a week-to-week basis, even though its lead-in was only half a point lower than the May 11th 'Ghosts' closer (0.62). The news was even more grim in the 10 p.m. hour as 'CSI: Vegas' (0.19, -0.13) crashed to a new series low at the worst time imaginable. ABC had better luck as a whole for its Thursday finale night as both 'Station 19' (0.46, +0.04) and 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.43, +0.05) picked up a couple ticks. 'Law & Order' (0.34, +0.01) and 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (0.41, +0.05) gained a bit of momentum on NBC for their respective finales. In the middle, 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.44, -0.01) shed a single hundredth. The Fox network chugged along with reruns of 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' (0.13) and 'Animal Control' (0.12/0.13). The CW went even lower than that with an encore of 'Walker' (0.02) and '100 Days to Indy' (0.02).

Finals Update: 'Station 19' (+0.1) and the 8:30 episode of 'Young Sheldon' (+0.1) adjusted up.

High Potential Ordered to Series by ABC

ABC has ordered procedural drama pilot High Potential to series. Starring Kaitlin Olson, the series centers on a single mom with an exceptional mind who helps solve an unsolvable crime during her shift as a cleaner for the police department. When the department discovers her ability for putting things in order due to her high intellectual potential, a seasoned detective brings her in as a consultant and they form an unstoppable duo. Daniel Sunjata, Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, Amirah J and Judy Reyes also star alongside Olson. The series is an adaptation of the French series HIP.

Not Dead Yet Renewed for Season 2

Not Dead Yet's title has proven quite apt. ABC has renewed the series for a second season. Though its ratings have been quite middling, even underperforming previous time slot occupant Home Economics, the show will be given a second chance, after rating as ABC's #1 new series this season (while simultaneously being their lowest-rated comedy) with a 0.30 seasonal average. It was said to have performed very well on streaming, however, which certainly eased its path to renewal. The sitcom, centering on an obituary writer who can see ghosts, was one of just four new comedies across all of broadcast TV this season. Gina Rodriguez, Hannah Simone, Lauren Ash, Angela E. Gibbs, Rick Glassman and Joshua Banday star in the series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

The Conners Renewed for Season 6

ABC's top-rated show will be back next season, as The Conners has been renewed for a sixth season. This Roseanne continuation series has long been a valuable part of a diminishing ABC comedy department, but experienced a particularly strong season this year, holding fully steady from last season with a 0.50 season average in the 18-49 ratings demographic. The show took advantage of its new time slot, having been moved to 8 PM this year after two seasons on Wednesdays at 9. Its performance in the slot was barely below The Goldbergs' performance there in the 2021-22 TV season, despite a 20% drop in the broadcast league average. The show is the last from an era of family sitcom domination on ABC, following the cancellation of The Goldbergs this season. John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson and Jay R. Ferguson star in the series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.
