Tuesday TV Ratings 6/29/21: TMZ UFO Special Decent, College Bowl Dips Behind Rising Americas Got Talent (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: NBC had a mixed bag of an evening as 'America's Got Talent' (1.0) gained a tenth while the 'Capitol One College Bowl' (0.4) inched down from its debut. Fox got a passable rating out of a TMZ UFO special (0.4), but 'Mental Samurai' (0.3) lost a tenth when compared to its previous episode in the 9pm hour. 'The Flash' (0.2) held even and was followed by a 'Superman & Lois' rerun (0.1) on the CW. ABC got 0.3s out of its 8pm comedy repeats and 0.2s out of its 9pm reruns. A 10pm encore of 'To Tell the Truth' (0.3) surprisingly managed to grow from there. CBS had another round of drama repeats (0.3/0.3/0.3).

Finals Update: Repeats of NCIS (+0.1), The Conners (+0.1) and FBI: Most Wanted (+0.) adjusted up.

Monday TV Ratings 6/28/21: Hell’s Kitchen Narrows Gap with Slipping The Bachelorette, American Ninja Warrior, HouseBroken and Duncanville Stay Steady (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: 'The Bachelorette' (0.7) and 'The Celebrity Dating Game' (0.4) each lost a tenth on ABC, but both programs were still the highest-rated in their respective hours. Fox's 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.6) tied its last installment and came within striking distance of the alphabet network's 'Bachelorette'. 'Housebroken' posted its fifth-straight 0.3 rating while 'Duncanville' mustered up its sixth-straight 0.2. 'American Ninja Warrior' (0.5) and 'Small Fortune' (0.3) were steady with their previous outings on NBC. CBS was entirely in repeat-mode with 'The Neighborhood', 'Bob Hearts Abishola', 'NCIS: New Orleans', and 'Bull'. The CW had stable editions of 'All American' (0.2) and 'The Republic of Sarah' (0.1)

Finals Update: The Bachelorette (+0.1) and the repeat of Bob Hearts Abishola (+0.1) adjusted up.

Sunday TV Ratings 6/27/21: ABC Game Shows Slide, Gymnastic Trials Dominate, Batwoman Steady for Finale (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: Despite boasting Tik-Tok starpower, ABC's 'Celebrity Family Feud' (0.5) lost two-tenths from last week's preliminary rating. The ripple effect continued as the night went on as both 'The Chase' (0.4) and 'To Tell the Truth' (0.3) dropped to new season lows. A repeat of 'AFV' at 7 (0.5) was only a tenth below the previous Sunday encore. Much of the decline likely had to do with the increased competition, with NBC's broadcast of the 'Olympic Gymnastics Trials' (1.2) outpacing all other offerings. The 'Track and Field Trials' in the 7pm hour (0.4) performed significantly worse. CBS got a strong result out of the 'PGA Tournament' (0.6) but '60 Minutes' (0.4) fell from there. That was followed by anemic repeats of 'The Equalizer' (0.2) and 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.2). Fox got a truly dreadful rating from its two-hour broadcast of 'PBC Boxing' (0.1). Reruns of 'Duncanville' (0.2) and 'HouseBroken' (0.1) occupied the 7pm hour. The CW was predictably steady with 'Legends of Tomorrow' (0.1) and the 'Batwoman' finale (0.1).

Finals Update: Celebrity Family Feud (+0.1), PBC Boxing (+0.1) and To Tell The Truth (+0.1) adjusted up. 60 Minutes (-0.2) and repeats of Duncanville (-0.1) and The Equalizer (-0.2) adjusted down.

2020-21 Drama Scorecard (May 9-June 18): More Cruelly Delayed Cancellation to Report

60 dramas now are on display, most of which belong to CW in the last third of the chart.  40 shows are renewed and returning, 2 are moving elsewhere (Paramount Plus), 4 declared their final season prior to launch, 12 were cancelled, and The Outpost and The Republic of Sarah are still on the air ready to determine.  Given it is nearly impossible for CW to cancel a show, there isn't much for discussion there.

What is on the table is the slew of awkwardly executed cancellations performed by NBC following upfronts in May.  It was hardly surprising to see Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist get the axe though the shock laid in it wasn't outsourced to streaming app Peacock.  The series was critically acclaimed and visually appealing, but rated downright poor during both of its seasons.  Even a mild bounce to Tuesdays could not forecast growth was possible.  Manifest had its own shock factor after moving to Thursdays late in the season, taking a dip in ratings but upgrading the poorly-rated sitcoms.  However, it also sat next door to the lucrative and powerful Law & Order power block, failing to establish itself being able to improve various timeslots if moved elsewhere.

These cancellations seemed saddening (and should have been handled earlier as it seemed NBC made up their mind a long time ago).  However, this week's cancellation of Good Girls struck the largest shockwave.  Good Girls was in its 4th season and helped NBC make a soft colony on Sundays, a difficult evening to broadcast.  Renewal odds were predicted for Likely Renewal due to a strong history, which now appears to have come to a close.  NBC appears to be heading not for troubled waters, but a bland, predictable schedule few will care about.  Just how many Chicago or Law & Order spinoffs does an audience need?

2020-21 Sitcom Scorecard (May 9-June 20): Housebroken Leans Cancellation

The in-season shows have gone into hibernation, leaving the totals of 18 renewed shows returning, 9 shows cancelled, 2 declaring their final season prior to debut, and then HouseBroken.  FOX seems to be updating their scheduling style and taking CW's attitude of no one seems to give a shit about Nielsens in the 2020's and opened up a cozy berth for summer programming.  While other networks rely on gameshows and reality TV (or in the case of this unorthodox season, finishing up in-season shows into June), FOX has mixed the slate and has animated sitcoms on Monday nights.  They even proppe it against the popular Hell's Kitchen as an ideal lead-in.

So why does HouseBroken still score 0.26 ratings out of Hell's Kitchen's 0.70 rating?  It appears the series may have a lack of interest.  Duncanville's renewals have been shocking at the least as its Spring 2020 performances were so poor, they would have been axed in recent years in the likes of Son of Zorn and Making History.  However, it was handed a 3rd season renewal prior to debut.  It appears FOX is investing in shows to add to its rich history of Animation Domination, and branching outside the (formerly) lucrative Sunday nights.  Under old scheduling patterns, Duncanville and HouseBroken would have plenty of room on Sundays.

However, FOX seems to hold value in repeats of The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers which incidentally rate higher than originals.  The undesirable Sunday slots are housed to kill off the undesired sitcoms Bless The Harts and The Moodys, two sophomore shows who didn't deserve their return ticket.  So why is HouseBroken at Leans Cancellation?  It could indeed earn a return ticket if FOX is working toward colonizing the summer lineup.  But its ratings against a sturdy lead-in are lackluster, and FOX already committed to Duncanville.  Space is a limited factor in Renew/Cancel, as there's miles of it available in the summer.  Housebroken is not strong enough to have a confident return, but could easily return if FOX deems it profitable.

Saturday TV Ratings 6/26/21: Track and Field Olympic Trials Lead, MLB Doubles, Superstar Racing Experience Steady (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: NBC's broadcast of the 'Track and Field Olympic Trials' (0.6) beat out its competitors but was a tenth shy of Friday's 'Gymnastic Trials' (0.7). A low-rated repeat of the 'Capitol One College Bowl' (0.2) occupied the 8pm slot. ABC had a lineup that resembled a descending staircase, with a repeat of 'AFV' (0.3) doing well enough, a 'When Nature Calls' encore (0.2) falling a bit from there, and a rerun of 'The Good Doctor' (0.1) posting a truly ugly result. CBS was around that range with 'Superstar Racing Experience' (0.2) and a '48 Hours' encore (0.2). Fox had a solid edition of 'MLB Regional Coverage' (0.4) that went a tenth above last week.

Finals Update: MLB Regional Coverage (+0.1) and repeats of When Nature Calls (+0.1) and The Good Doctor (+0.1) adjusted up.

Friday TV Ratings 6/25/21: Daytime Emmys Abysmal, Olympic Gymnastic Trials Easily Lead (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: NBC's broadcast of the 'Olympic Gymnastics Trials' (0.7) managed to bring back some life to Friday nights. The 'Trials' telecast topped usual champion 'WWE Smackdown' (0.5), the latter of which was steady with last week on Fox. A 10pm 'Dateline' original (0.5) noticeably benefited from the stronger 'Olympics' lead-in. On ABC, 'Emergency Call' (0.3) was on-par with its previous episode and led into a '20/20' encore (0.3). CBS's showing of the '48th Daytime Emmy Awards' (0.2) completely tanked at 8, even by Friday standards. A repeat of 'Blue Bloods' (0.2) matched the ceremony at 10. 'Charmed' (0.1) and 'Dynasty' (0.1) posted the same rating as the week prior on the CW.

Finals Update: US Olympic Gymnastics Trials (+0.1) and Emergency Call (+0.1) adjusted up. Dateline NBC (-0.1) adjusted down.

Good Girls Canceled by NBC

Bad news for Good Girls - NBC has canceled the crime dramedy after four seasons. The show was the second-lowest rated series on NBC in the 2020-21 TV season with just a 0.34 average. It did, however, manage to consistently grow from its Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist lead-in despite airing in the notoriously difficult Sunday 10 PM slot. The show was initially seen as likely to be picked up for season five due to its hearty Netflix deal, said to be one of the most lucrative of any currently-running broadcast show, but chances if renewal faded after it remained in limbo for months after NBC’s Upfronts. It was one of the most popular on Netflix for months after its third season was added to the service earlier this year. That was not enough to save the show from its tiny ratings. Christina Hendricks, Retta, Mae Whitman, Matthew Lillard, Reno Wilson and Manny Montana lead the cast.

Thursday TV Ratings 6/24/21: When Nature Calls Starts Solidly, Good Girls Ties Series Low Behind Passable Making It, United States of Al and Legacies End Steady (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC's new series 'When Nature Calls' (0.5) debuted in respectable territory by summer standards. The comedic nature show outpaced all non-ABC offerings and matched the week-ago 'Holey Moley' premiere. 'Moley' itself (0.5) was steady in the 9pm slot while 'The Hustler' (0.4) actually picked up a tenth after a disappointing start. On NBC, reality series 'Making It' (0.4) returned from a hiatus that lasted a year-and-a-half. Despite that, the Amy Poehler series was only a tenth below its December 2019 finale. 'Good Girls' (0.3/0.3) occupied the 9pm and 10pm slot, matching its low after a month off the air. Fox's 'Beat Shazam' (0.4) lost a tenth while 'Mental Samuari' (0.4) gained one, with 'Samuari' now doubling the dreadful 0.2 rating it posted for its late-May premiere. CBS's 'United States of AI' (0.4) was flat for its finale while 'Clarice' (0.2) lost a tenth for its final episode. Encores of 'Young Sheldon' (0.3), 'Mom' (0.3), and 'B Positive' (0.2) filled up the other slots. 'Walker' (0.2) inched up on the CW, but 'Legacies' (0.1) failed to rise for its finale.

Finals Update: Beat Shazam (+0.1) and the repeat of Young Sheldon (+0.1) adjusted up.

Wednesday TV Ratings 6/23/21: Card Sharks and In The Dark Returns Tie Previous Averages, The Blacklist Finale Hits Series Low, MasterChef Easily Leads (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: On a night with a handful of premieres and finales, NBC's 'The Blacklist' (0.2) found itself hitting a new series low for its season eight closer. The longtime drama was a tenth shy of last week's rating and a tenth behind its lead-in, 2017 DreamWorks film 'The Boss Baby' (0.3). ABC brought back 'Card Sharks' (0.3) in underwhelming fashion. The Joel McHale game-show was two-tenths below its last episode from January but roughly in-line with its lackluster Fall 2020 run. Earlier in the evening, 'Press Your Luck' (0.4) shed a tenth as 'The $100,000 Pyramid' (0.4) tied its previous outing. Over on CBS, 'Kids Say the Darndest Things' (0.3) was flat for its finale and was followed by more 'SWAT' repeats (0.2/0.2). Fox was steady across the board with 'MasterChef' (0.6) and 'Crime Scene Kitchen' (0.4). 'In the Dark' (0.1) returned for its third season on the CW and posted the same rating it garnered throughout season two. 'Kung Fu' (0.1) didn't budge in the 8pm slot.

Finals Update: 'MasterChef' (+0.1) and 'Crime Scene Kitchen' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 6/22/21: Capital One College Bowl Has Solid Premiere, LEGO Masters and America’s Got Talent Rise (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: After sinking for a special 10pm episode, NBC's 'America's Got Talent' (0.8) bounced back in its return to 8. The series rose two-tenths on a week-to-week basis and led into the debut of the 'Capital One College Bowl' (0.5). The latter was on-par with what 'New Amsterdam' garnered in the slot two weeks ago. Fox's 'LEGO Masters' (0.5) inched up from its preliminary 0.4 rating from the week prior. 'Mental Samurai' (0.3) held even once more at 9. ABC's reruns of 'The Goldbergs' (0.3), 'Home Economics' (0.2), 'The Conners' (0.2), 'Black-ish' (0.2), and 'To Tell the Truth' (0.2) were slightly below CBS's encores of 'NCIS' (0.3), 'FBI' (0.3), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.3). The CW had steady broadcasts of 'The Flash' (0.2) and 'Superman & Lois' (0.2).

Finals Update: America's Got Talent (+0.1) and repeats of NCIS (+0.1), The Goldbergs (+0.1), Home Economics (+0.1) and The Conners (+0.1) adjusted up.

Monday TV Ratings 6/21/21: The Bachelorette and The Celebrity Dating Game Rise, Housebroken Steady as Hell’s Kitchen Slips (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC's Monday lineup became a touch stronger as 'The Bachelorette' (0.9) and 'The Celebrity Dating Game' (0.5) each rose by a tenth. This is particularly encouraging for 'Dating Game' as it's quite rare for a series to grow from its series premiere. On Fox, 'Hell's Kitchen Young Guns' (0.6) shed a tenth as animated sitcoms 'Housebroken' (0.3) and 'Duncanville' (0.2) held even once again. 'American Ninja Warrior' (0.5) remained steady behind a sturdy showing of 'Track and Field Olympic Trials' (0.6). CBS had solid encores of 'The Neighborhood' (0.5) and 'Bob Hearts Abishola' (0.4). Drama reruns 'NCIS: New Orleans' (0.3) and 'Bull' (0.3) tapered off from there. 'All American' (0.2) shed a tenth on the CW, but 'The Republic of Sarah' (0.1) tied its premiere.

Finals Update: Hell's Kitchen Young Guns (+0.1) adjusted up.

Big Governors Don't Cry

Sunday TV Ratings 6/20/21: Bless the Harts Ends with a Low, US Open and Olympic Trials Lead for NBC, Celebrity Family Feud and The Chase Stable (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: It was series finale night on the Fox network, with two canceled comedies airing their last-ever episodes. 'Bless the Harts' (0.1) ended its run in horrific fashion, losing a tenth and tying its series low. Repeats of 'Duncanville' (0.1) and 'The Simpsons' (0.2) sandwiched the finale. 'The Moodys' (0.2) fared slightly better at 9:30 by rising a tenth from its previous installment. It led out of encores of 'The Great North' (0.2) and 'Bob's Burgers' (0.2). Moving away from miserable numbers, NBC struck gold with the 'U.S. Open Golf Championship' (1.3), 'Olympic Swimming Trials' (1.0), and 'Olympic Track & Field Trials' (0.6). It's rare to see anything above a 1.0 in the summer, so this served as an easy win for the peacock network. On ABC, the repeat of 'AFV' (0.5), 'Celebrity Family Feud' (0.7) and 'The Chase' (0.6) all tied their week-ago showings, but 'To Tell the Truth' (0.4) gave back a tenth at 10. CBS got a passable result out of a '60 Minutes' rerun (0.3) and a dreadful number out of a presentation of the 2014 film 'Selma' (0.1). 'Legends of Tomorrow' (0.1) and 'Batwoman' (0.1) were unchanged on the CW.

Finals Update: Celebrity Family Feud (+0.1), To Tell The Truth (+0.1), US Olympic Track & Field Trials (+0.1), and repeats of America's Funniest Home Videos (+0.1) and Bob's Burgers (+0.1) adjusted up. US Olympic Swimming Trials (-0.2) adjusted down.

MIXED-ISH: EVERY EPISODE, EVERY RATING

The "Every Episode, Every Rating" series
takes a look at the highs and lows a program posted during its full run. Praise or criticism is in reference to the program's performance in the Nielsen ratings.

Coming onto the scene during the dying days of the 2010s, Mixed-ish was the second spinoff to ABC's popular sitcom Black-ish, a series that had already spawned Freeform's Grown-ish a year prior. The sitcom chronicled the childhood of Rainbow "Bow" Johnson as she made her way through the 1980s as a biracial preteen. Although Black-ish performed fairly well for its first three seasons, its ratings predictably took a nosedive once it moved away from the cushiony post-Modern Family timeslot. Considering it had just fallen a whopping 34% during the 2018-19 season, ordering a spinoff seemed like a questionable move on the alphabet network's part. Nonetheless, ABC seemed determined to make the situation work. Mixed-ish was given the 9pm anchor slot on Tuesday nights, sandwiched between promising sophomore Bless This Mess and a fading Black-ish. It's quite rare for a new comedy to be placed in the lead-off position and even more uncommon for a spinoff to be the lead-in to its parent program. All this meant was that ABC had high hopes for the Kenya Barris project and had given it enough of a chance to succeed.

SERIES HIGH

Season Low

Fall 2019:
Mixed-ish began on solid footing for its series premiere, posting a healthy 0.9 rating and building from a disappointing Bless This Mess (0.8). Mess had lost nearly 40% of its Conners lead-in (1.3), so it was quite an impressive feat for Mixed-ish to actually grow from that point. Despite the nice start, Mixed-ish was never able to beat out its lead-in after that, with the series either tying Mess or falling a tenth behind it. The sitcom took a modest dip to a 0.7 rating in week 2 and stayed at that range for most of October, even inching up to a rounded 0.8 rating for the October 29th installment. Things took a turn for the worse in November as Mixed-ish returned to a 0.59 after the entire comedy block took a week off for The Little Mermaid Live!. It failed to recover from that point, posting two more 0.6s and then dropping down to a dreadful 0.5 rating for its winter finale, losing over 40% of its premiere rating in a matter of 10 episodes.

Winter & Spring 2020:
After closing out its fall stint on a sour note, Mixed-ish received the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of being the direct lead-out to the first game of the Jeopardy: Greatest of All Time tournament (2.4). Mixed-ish exploded to a massive 1.1 rating, nearly doubling its previous episode from December. Although it barely retained more than 40% of the Jeopardy audience, this January 7th installment served as a new series high and the first (and only) time it broke the 1.0 threshold. The spinoff series got the Jeopardy stimulus package the following week as well, with the final Greatest of All Time game garnering a slightly weaker, albeit still monstrous, 1.9 rating on January 14th. This time around, Mixed-ish could only muster up a 0.7 rating, losing well over 60% of its lead-in. Any good will that came from leading out of the Alex Trebek game-show completely evaporated afterwards, as the freshman comedy crashed to a 0.48 and then to a 0.46, going below even its 2019 low. Bad turned to worse during the February 11th outing as this marked the first instance where ish lost two-tenths from Bless This Mess instead of the usual one. The sitcom failed to rise above a 0.5 rating during the month of February.

With viewers departing and ratings dwindling, Mixed-ish got its second lifeline in the form of tragedy. March 2020 was the month when COVID-19 was officially declared a pandemic. As more and more people stayed inside due to the shutdowns, TV ratings experienced an unprecedented spike across the board. What was usually a period when ratings fell further became one where shows reached their highest levels yet. Mixed-ish wasn't quite able to set a new high but did jump to a 0.65 rating for its first lockdown-fueled broadcast. Excluding the Jeopardy-charged outings, this March 17th episode was its strongest performance since October 2019. The boost slowly wore off from there, with the following three episodes each shedding a few hundredths (0.61-0.55-0.47). The series closed out its first season with a measly 0.48 rating on May 5th. Although that rating was nothing to write home about, it was slightly above its series low (0.46) and likely much higher than it would have been without COVID in the picture. A second season was ordered despite its shortcomings in the Nielsen department, though it would not make it back to the roster for another eight months.

Season HIGH

Series Low

Winter & Spring 2021:
Taking into account the extended hiatus and timeslot change, the 0.59 rating that Mixed-ish garnered for its season 2 premiere was shockingly strong and just a few hundredths behind Black-ish (0.64). The series had had its anchor slot revoked after its subpar performance the previous season, now leading out of Black-ish instead of leading into it in the 9:30 timeslot. Anthony Anderson-hosted To Tell the Truth occupied the 8pm slot since The Conners had been shipped to Wednesdays and Bless This Mess had been canceled, making the 8-10pm stretch a fairly compatible lineup. Mixed-ish never found its way back to that level since the entire block took a hit the week after. The sophomore sitcom dropped to a 0.46 and tied its series low, then created a new one for its next episode (0.43). The series hovered around that level for a bit longer but somehow managed to dip to an even weaker 0.36 on March 2nd and March 23rd. Outside of a brief uptick to a 0.40, on the evening when Truth was replaced with Pooch Perfect at 8, the comedy only slipped from there. Its last five episodes were all at a pathetic 0.3 rating and below 2 million viewers. Coming four days after its cancellation announcement, the series finale managed to post its worst demo rating yet (0.30), serving as a miserable but fitting end to the 36-episode run of Mixed-ish

Post-Mortem:
Above all else, the commercial failure of Mixed-ish cannot be blamed on the network or any timeslot it aired in. The series lucked out in a way few others do during its first season, first getting the massive Jeopardy lead-in two weeks in a row and then getting to air during the beginning of the lockdowns. While it initially benefited from both situations, it failed to take away any long-term benefit from them. It had none of those lucky moments in season two and its true strength, or lack thereof, was revealed for all to see. In the end, this was a show that seemed dependent on how well the block as a whole was performing. It rose and fell alongside the others and it barely felt like it had an audience of its own. While it did always seem to start well for its premieres and did grow slightly from black-ish for the April 6th episode, those felt more like flukes than evidence that the series was becoming a stronger player.
