What is on the table is the slew of awkwardly executed cancellations performed by NBC following upfronts in May. It was hardly surprising to see Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist get the axe though the shock laid in it wasn't outsourced to streaming app Peacock. The series was critically acclaimed and visually appealing, but rated downright poor during both of its seasons. Even a mild bounce to Tuesdays could not forecast growth was possible. Manifest had its own shock factor after moving to Thursdays late in the season, taking a dip in ratings but upgrading the poorly-rated sitcoms. However, it also sat next door to the lucrative and powerful Law & Order power block, failing to establish itself being able to improve various timeslots if moved elsewhere.
These cancellations seemed saddening (and should have been handled earlier as it seemed NBC made up their mind a long time ago). However, this week's cancellation of Good Girls struck the largest shockwave. Good Girls was in its 4th season and helped NBC make a soft colony on Sundays, a difficult evening to broadcast. Renewal odds were predicted for Likely Renewal due to a strong history, which now appears to have come to a close. NBC appears to be heading not for troubled waters, but a bland, predictable schedule few will care about. Just how many Chicago or Law & Order spinoffs does an audience need?
So why does HouseBroken still score 0.26 ratings out of Hell's Kitchen's 0.70 rating? It appears the series may have a lack of interest. Duncanville's renewals have been shocking at the least as its Spring 2020 performances were so poor, they would have been axed in recent years in the likes of Son of Zorn and Making History. However, it was handed a 3rd season renewal prior to debut. It appears FOX is investing in shows to add to its rich history of Animation Domination, and branching outside the (formerly) lucrative Sunday nights. Under old scheduling patterns, Duncanville and HouseBroken would have plenty of room on Sundays.
However, FOX seems to hold value in repeats of The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers which incidentally rate higher than originals. The undesirable Sunday slots are housed to kill off the undesired sitcoms Bless The Harts and The Moodys, two sophomore shows who didn't deserve their return ticket. So why is HouseBroken at Leans Cancellation? It could indeed earn a return ticket if FOX is working toward colonizing the summer lineup. But its ratings against a sturdy lead-in are lackluster, and FOX already committed to Duncanville. Space is a limited factor in Renew/Cancel, as there's miles of it available in the summer. Housebroken is not strong enough to have a confident return, but could easily return if FOX deems it profitable.

Bad news for Good Girls - NBC has canceled the crime dramedy after four seasons. The show was the second-lowest rated series on NBC in the 2020-21 TV season with just a 0.34 average. It did, however, manage to consistently grow from its Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist lead-in despite airing in the notoriously difficult Sunday 10 PM slot. The show was initially seen as likely to be picked up for season five due to its hearty Netflix deal, said to be one of the most lucrative of any currently-running broadcast show, but chances if renewal faded after it remained in limbo for months after NBC’s Upfronts. It was one of the most popular on Netflix for months after its third season was added to the service earlier this year. That was not enough to save the show from its tiny ratings. Christina Hendricks, Retta, Mae Whitman, Matthew Lillard, Reno Wilson and Manny Montana lead the cast.
Summer programs continue to return, with three new arrivals this week in the form of game shows The Hustler, Card Sharks and Capital One College Bowl. Keep reading for my initial take on all three of these shows.

Coming onto the scene during the dying days of the 2010s, Mixed-ish was the second spinoff to ABC's popular sitcom Black-ish, a series that had already spawned Freeform's Grown-ish a year prior. The sitcom chronicled the childhood of Rainbow "Bow" Johnson as she made her way through the 1980s as a biracial preteen. Although Black-ish performed fairly well for its first three seasons, its ratings predictably took a nosedive once it moved away from the cushiony post-Modern Family timeslot. Considering it had just fallen a whopping 34% during the 2018-19 season, ordering a spinoff seemed like a questionable move on the alphabet network's part. Nonetheless, ABC seemed determined to make the situation work. Mixed-ish was given the 9pm anchor slot on Tuesday nights, sandwiched between promising sophomore Bless This Mess and a fading Black-ish. It's quite rare for a new comedy to be placed in the lead-off position and even more uncommon for a spinoff to be the lead-in to its parent program. All this meant was that ABC had high hopes for the Kenya Barris project and had given it enough of a chance to succeed.
