Everyone has a dark side. Nice to see Emily has one too. But damn girl, you Psycho.

S1E9 'Finish the Song'

AMC 

After getting arrested by the sheriff, Jesse escapes on the way to jail and goes into hiding under a bridge. Meanwhile, Tulip puts Emily in charge of feeding Cassidy while she goes to kill Carlos. Emily decides to kill 2 birds with one stone by calling Miles the mayor to Tulip's house and traps him in a room with a deranged and blood hungry Cassidy. Jesse comes to the house to get Tulip's help but finds Cassidy and gets threatened by him, but they both reconcile and together they get rid of all the bodies Cassidy had drained. Cassidy also decides to help Jesse find God while Tulip finds Carlos.

Meanwhile the Angels leave their motel to go to hell, leaving the decapitated Seraph to be found by the sheriff, who kills her out of mercy but unknowingly allows her to be resurrected to complete her mission. In hell, the Angels find the Cowboy, who has been stuck inside a cruel time loop. The Angels offer the Cowboy a chance to leave hell in exchange for killing Jesse, an offer the Cowboy seems happy to accept.

I loved the interactions of the Angels in the travel agency and on their way to hell. They were my favourite characters in this episode. After them is Emily who took us all by surprise when she led the mayor to his demise while remaining normal soon after. It felt good to see Cassidy again, despite remaining in a mutilated state thanks to his burn, but at least he has his sense of humour. Jesse's phone call to Tulip was really sweet but it's a shame she didn't respond to him seeing how she was busy with Carlos. Now that the Cowboy is coming to town, I'm having a good feeling about the finale, especially since this was a great setup episode

The Great Indoors will likely get a lot of people checking it out, as it airs after CBS's highest-rated show, The Big Bang Theory. The huge hit comedy will provide a nice lead-in for The Great Indoors.

On-brand for CBS
Not only is The Great Indoors a multi-camera comedy, which is what does best on CBS, but also its premise of an outdoors-y guy having to deal with a bunch of millennials is a premise that seems like it should be appealing to CBS's typical older audience.


What May Cause The Great Indoors to be a Miss for CBS?

Less trailer views than the Monday night comedies
The trailer-watching article tells us that the trailer views for The Great Indoors are below those of Man with a Plan and Kevin Can Wait. It seems that people may be interested in the show, or they may not know it exists.

Trailer not well liked
Additionally, those who saw the trailer weren't impressed. Its 61 like/dislike ratio has it tied with Lethal Weapon for the second least liked trailer, only behind MacGyver. Again, that information can be found here.

The Good Place could be a hit
The Great Indoors will be airing up against another new comedy, and that one gets a five-week head start. We don't know how well The Good Place will perform, but it could potentially draw viewers away from The Great Indoors.


What to Expect for The Great Indoors?

I think that the positive factors will have a great effect on the show, and that it will be successful, as I think that the large lead-in covers for the trailer views and being on-brand covers up for trailer reception, considering the age of CBS's audience.

On a repeat-filled Friday, ABC had another Shark Tank repeat (0.8) and one of the

two originals of the night, What Would You Do (0.8) which was up a tenth from last

week followed by a 20/20 repeat (0.7). CBS had all 0.6s with repeats of NCIS:

Los Angeles, Hawaii Five-0, and Blue Bloods. NBC had strong repeats with

America's Got Talent (0.8) and Dateline NBC (0.8). FOX had a strong

repeat of Bones (0.5) and a MasterChef repeat (0.4). And the CW had 

the other original of the night with Masters of Illusion (0.2) which stayed low

and a repeat of MadTV (0.2).

Summer Renew/Cancel - July 29: Wayward Pines is Likely to be Canceled

It's week eleven, and it has been yet another highly interrupted week thanks to the Democratic National Convention, though at least more programs aired this week than last. Also, this week gave us the finale of Wayward Pines.

Wayward Pines: This show remained stable from episode 3 to episode 10, getting 0.7 every week. That makes it very difficult to predict. I wish it had dropped to 0.6 a couple of times so I could be more confident in my prediction, which is really a big guess right now. I am figuring that a show that consistently gets 0.7 is not good enough, even with the reduced cost of filming in Canada, as next season it will likely get plenty of 0.6s and maybe even lower. I don't think that FOX wants that.

The Night Shift: One of the two shows looking to make it out of this summer alive, The Night Shift still must wait before it is certain to be renewed, if it ever is. This week's rating of 1.0 was disappointing following America's Got Talent, even though AGT had lower than usual ratings Wednesday night. Still, that shouldn't be a problem for it to be renewed, but it doesn't make a convincing case to be upgraded this week.

BrainDead: Upon moving to Sunday night, BrainDead hit another low. This low of 0.3 is lower than anything that Houdini & Doyle or Aquarius has gotten this season, and lower than Mistresses scored on July 4th. It is even more certain to be canceled now, as I wonder how long until it is moved to Saturday or completely pulled from the schedule.

On the last night of the DNC, ABC unrolled Battlebots (0.8) which was up a tenth from

last week's low, but the alarm bells started ringing on Greatest Hits (0.6) which downticked

and is in disaster territory, now down half a rating's point from it's promising 1.1 debut. CBS

had more repeats of The Big Bang Theory (1.3) and Life In Pieces (1.1) followed by Big

Brother (1.8) which was up a tenth and topped the night. NBC had a repeat of Running

Wild With Bear Grylls (0.7) followed by the return of Hollywood Game Night (0.7) which

was even with it's result that got it pulled off the schedule, but it's at least a bit more respectable

in the summer. FOX unveiled Home Free (0.6/0.5) which tied it's season high at 8 but was

back down at 9, even though both these results are awful, it was still above it's dreadful

result from last week. And the CW had another Legends of Tomorrow (0.3) repeat which

was finally up from it's streak of 0.2s and Beauty and the Beast (0.2). On the last night of

the DNC, CBS (0.8) spiked thanks to a Big Brother lead-in putting ABC (0.7) which

was even from last week in last place, but NBC (0.9) still won over all of them. 

New Show Hit/Miss Fall 2016 - Man with a Plan

As the summer has dragged on, this feature has looked ahead to the fall, looking at what factors could cause a show to do well or poorly, to assist in the difficult task of predicting how these shows will perform. This article focuses on what may cause Man with a Plan to succeed or fail.


What May Cause Man With a Plan to be a Hit?

One of the six stars of hit 90s sitcom Friends, LeBlanc has since starred on Episodes, which has aired four seasons so far, and has one last one coming up. For this show, LeBlanc was nominated for an Emmy four times. He is definitely popular, so he could bring that popularity back to broadcast.

Lack of comedy competition
The shows Man with a Plan will go up against, The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, Gotham, and Supergirl likely won't have much overlap audience with the CBS sitcom. This means there is likely an available audience out there for the show to capture.

Most-watched CBS comedy trailer
In number of trailer views, Man with a Plan beat out fellow CBS new sitcoms Kevin Can Wait and The Great Indoors. This larger awareness could be helpful. That information can be found here.


What May Cause Man with a Plan to be a Miss for CBS?

New show lead-in
Who knows how strong or weak Man with a Plan's lead-in is. The only thing we know is that it is untested, as Kevin Can Wait is also new to CBS this fall.

Incompatible with lead-out
If the lead-in struggles, Man with a Plan at least has a solid lead-out. However, this lead-out is much less compatible, as Man with a Plan has a male star and it revolves around a father, while 2 Broke Girls has, as the title would suggest, two female stars, and the show revolves around a business.

Trailer not well liked
The article referenced earlier also shows us that the trailer of Man with a Plan wasn't well liked. It only beats out two of the other new sitcoms' trailers, and it only barely beats out American Housewife's 74 with its 76 like/dislike ratio.


What to Expect for Man with a Plan?

I think that the negative factors, especially the trailer reception, will outweigh the positive factors, resulting in a low-rated show, though not one rated low enough that it needs to get pulled quickly.

It was a below average night if your name wasn't The CW as ABC continued with 

more comedy repeats of The Goldbergs (0.7/0.6) (which continued to do significantly

worse then The Middle), Modern Family (0.9), and Black-ish (0.7). CBS had more

Big Brother (1.6) which was down a tenth from last week and could only tie its

Friday airing. Then the network had American Gothic (0.6) which stayed
 flat. NBC had America's Got Talent (1.7) which crashed a whopping six
 tenths from last week, but The Night Shift (1.1) was only down a 

tenth from it's last airing. FOX saw MasterChef (1.0) crash to a new low, but the

Wayward Pines finale (0.7) was steady. And The CW had an above average night

with Penn and Teller: Fool Us (0.4) up a tenth followed by an above average Whose

Lines Is It Anyway? (0.5) and a repeat (0.4) after it. On the DNC front, it was a 

surprisingly soft night as NBC (0.7) was way down and could only tie ABC (0.7)

while CBS (0.4) stayed low. 

Wayward Pines Season 2 Finale Review

After significant improvement last week, I came into the finale not with season one level expectations, but still expecting a good show. Here is what I got.


S2E10 "Bedtime Story"

In the first act, all that really gets accomplished is Theo trying to save Jason. In the second act, we get a hilarious moment with Arlene, and then we get Theo and CJ talking about who to leave behind and who to take. Kerry discovers the disgusting truth that Jason did last week, and I think she had a more fitting reaction.

It is revealed that families are not all able to go together, with a father being shown left behind. Frank as well his left behind, and he is beaten by an officer when he tries to join his sister. Chaos descends upon Wayward Pines, though not by the abbies, but by those left behind.

Theo plans to sacrifice himself to the abbies, similar to how Ethan did so last season, though Ethan's sacrifice was at the last moment, while Theo's is much more methodical and planned. Kerry, instead however, sacrifices herself, which is fitting for a character who never really fit in and found happiness. The ending feels very incomplete, with many questions and no answers about the future of the human race.


I did not enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed last week's episode. It was an alright episode. If Wayward Pines returns next summer, I will continue to watch, but quicker to give up on the series if it doesn't impress.

Lady Dynamite, Chelsea, and Real Rob Renewed by Netflix

Lady Dynamite, Chelsea, and Real Rob have been given second seasons by Netflix. This comes two months after the Lady Dynamite premiere, almost 8 months after the Real Rob premiere, and nearly three months after the Chelsea premiere. What do you think of this news? For a Men Tell All special, The Bachelorette (1.4) crashed on ABC half a ratings point

below last week's result. This led NBC's America's Got Talent (2.2) to dominate the

night down a tenth from last week. The rest of the originals couldn't crack a 1.0 as

a repeat of NCIS (0.7) led into Zoo (0.8) which was flat. FOX had Hotel Hell (0.9)

which tied it's season high and Coupled (0.5) which stayed low. The CW had a

repeat of Whose Line Is It Anyway? (0.4) then an original (0.4) followed by the

premiere of Madtv (0.3) which got off to a low start despite some solid repeat

and special ratings. On day 2 of the DNC, NBC (1.3) dominated up two tenths.

ABC (0.7) and CBS (0.4) went down two tenths. 

Monday TV Ratings: Bachelorette Beats Warrior + DNC Results

The Bachelorette (2.0) inched up from last week and easily dominated the night for

ABC. In a close second, NBC's American Ninja Warrior (1.6) inched down from

last week. The rest of the night was a primetime wasteland, CBS had repeats of

Mom (0.7), 2 Broke Girls (0.7), and Scorpion (0.6). FOX continued to air low

rated So You Think You Can Dance (0.7) which remained even, but could still

not even come close to ABC and NBC's powerhouse reality programming.

And The CW looked better then usually thanks to a Madtv special (0.4) and

a repeat of Penn and Teller: Fool Us (0.4). It was day one of the DNC, and

unlike the RNC, it was more competitive for which network did the best. 

NBC (1.0) and ABC (1.0) ended up tying for the night, compared to ABC's

low rated RNC coverage, this is good news for the network. CBS (0.5) 

remained in a lowly last place similar to how it performed with the RNC

coverage. 

Finals Update: CBS (0.6) and NBC (1.1) had their DNC coverage adjust up while ABC's coverage (0.9) adjusted down. Madtv (0.3) and Penn and Teller: Fool Us (0.3) both went down.

ABC's game shows saw some minor slippage as Celebrity Family Feud (1.4) dropped two tenths, The $100,000 Pyramid (1.4) was only down a tenth, while Match Game (1.1) tied it's season low and was

also down a tenth. While it's still a solid performer, especially for the summer, a couple tenths lower and

Match Game will be entering dangerous waters, a repeat of America's Funniest Videos (0.7) did well 

starting the night. CBS had a 60 Minutes repeat (0.8) lead into Big Brother (1.9) which hit a Sunday

season high, but the heat had no effect on a Madam Secretary repeat (0.5) followed by Braindead (0.3)

which hit an embarrassingly new low in it's move to Sunday. NBC had all repeats with Dateline NBC (0.6),

Hollywood Game Night (0.4), and American Ninja Warrior (0.7). And FOX had more comedy repeats

a week before the Teen Choice Awards with The Simpsons (0.4), Bob's Burgers (0.5), The Simpsons (0.7),

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.5), Family Guy (0.7), and The Last Man on Earth (0.5). 

Finals Update: ABC saw some good news as Celebrity Family Feud (1.5) and Match Game (1.2) both adjusted up putting Feud down a tenth from last week, and Game even. On CBS, 60 Minutes (0.9) and
 Big Brother (2.0), Brother adjusted up to a new high, but the Madam Secretary repeat (0.4) adjusted down making it look even worse. On FOX, the Family Guy repeat (0.6) adjusted down.
