CBS Renew/Cancel Week 13: They Should Have Never Let Big Brother Join In Any Reindeer Games

Below is the table for Week 13 of CBS Renew/Cancel, followed by an analysis. Let me know what you think by voting in the poll and leaving a comment!

This edition also brings back the mini table featuring acquired series and Paramount+ imports like NCIS: Sydney, Ghosts UK, and SEAL Team. The limited-run Big Brother Reindeer Games has also been added to this table this week.

Big Brother Reindeer Games
In wake of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, CBS dragged their summer staple Big Brother into early November. That provided a temporarily fix to a few time slots, but risked overexposing the long-running unscripted series. As if the 42 episode season wasn’t enough, CBS is now airing the limited series spinoff Big Brother Reindeer Games, which has six episodes scheduled within two weeks. In its first week, Big Brother Reindeer Games’s ratings were less than half those of Big Brother’s most recent season in the Live + Same Day Adults 18-49 demo. It averaged a paltry 0.26 rating in the demo, and dropped from its lead-in both times that it aired at 9 pm. It looked especially bad on Tuesday, notching a 0.23 rating out of its lead-in’s 0.32. That was only enough to tie ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight in the same time slot. Big Brother Reindeer Games has been rejected and Big Brother itself is on the brink of being overexposed. This is something CBS should take into consideration before launching another spinoff, even if it’s just for a two week run.

The Amazing Race
The Amazing Race finished its season with a 0.44 rating in the Adults 18-49 Live + Same Day demo, airing directly after Survivor’s 0.84. It averaged a 0.39 rating in the demo for the season. CBS seems content with how The Amazing Race is performing, as they’re keeping the Survivor/The Amazing Race duo intact in the spring. The Amazing Race has looked worse before, and while it’s no Survivor, it’s still likely to be renewed beyond the spring.

NCIS: Sydney
NCIS: Sydney remains remarkably stable as a whole, notching a 0.32 rating in the Adults 18-49 Live + Same Day demo on Tuesday. All five episodes so far have received either a 0.32 or a 0.34 rating. That’s not far off from the 0.35 averages that NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawai’i rated last season. It’s not a huge breakout hit that would warrant CBS stepping in to save should it get canceled in Australia, but a second season could certainly plug an open time slot where necessary.
