The Resident Canceled by Fox

The Resident has flatlined. Fox has canceled the veteran medical drama after a six-season run, nearly three months after it aired its sixth season finale. The series was a middling player for Fox, with a 0.34 average that put it ahead of numerous already-renewed shows on Fox, including The Cleaning Lady and Alert. However, the show was in its precarious sixth season, the point in which actors' contracts typically need to be renegotiated in order for a show to continue. Its ratings were not enough to encourage Fox to continue with the series, with its lack of ownership by Fox likely also helping to doom the Amy Holden Jones production. Rumors of the cancelation began swirling last month, when pieces of the set were auctioned off. With 107 episodes to its name, it was Fox's live action series with the most episodes to its name of their current programming lineup. Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greeenwood, Malcolm Jamal Warner and Jane Leeves starred in the series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

FOX Renew/Cancel Week 10: ’The Resident’ Is Now In Critical Condition

 Predictions for 1/21/23

Below are the latest renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2022-23 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Since the previous update, only 'The Resident', 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit', and 'Fantasy Island' have aired new episodes.  As always, only scripted programming will be taken into account in this column.

Notable Changes: The A18-49 ratings average of 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' (0.45, -0.11) has declined by a little more than a full point. It drops down from #3 to #5 in the overall ranking. This freefall will likely continue given that the football-boosted premiere is inflating the show's average to a ridiculous degree.

The Resident: On January 17th, 'The Resident' finished out its sixth season with a perfectly fine 0.37 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. This serves as the drama's strongest performance since November and would generally be solid enough to justify a renewal on the Fox network. Despite those decent numbers, this series is no longer expected to return for a seventh season. For one, this season had the smallest episode count (13) that the show has had in its run. Considering that the program's 5th season had a full-order of 23 episodes, this type of reduction is clearly not a sign of encouragement for the aging veteran. On top of that, six-year contracts are the standard for regular cast-members on a television series. This means that the stars of 'The Resident' would likely have to sign new contracts for a potential seventh cycle. 'The Resident' may provide modest ratings but it is definitely not strong enough to warrant renegotiations. Filler content like 'Hell's Kitchen' and 'Name That Tune' can provide similar (or better) results at a much lower cost. 'The Resident' is now Likely to be Canceled, even though it deserves a renewal off Nielsen ratings alone.

Alert: For its third episode, 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' held at the same putrid 0.22 that it garnered for episode two. The small consolation here is that it grew by three-hundredths of a point from its 'Fantasy Island' lead-in (0.19). Though growth like that is usually a good sign, this is surely not enough to help its chances. 'Alert' is once more Likely to be Canceled and probably won't lose that distinction any time soon.

What's Next?: New drama 'Accused' debuts on Sunday, January 22nd. The fourth season of '9-1-1: Lone Star' premieres on January 24, 2023. Both dramas will enter the chart in the next update after their premiere ratings are made available.

FOX Renew/Cancel Week 6: ’The Resident’ Is Still In Stable Condition

 Predictions for 10/29/22

Below are the latest renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2022-23 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Since the last update, 'The Resident', 'Call Me Kat', and 'Welcome To Flatch' have all posted new season highs. Only scripted programming will be taken into account in this column.

The Resident: 'The Resident' just aired its 100th episode on the Fox network and climbed to a new season high in the process. This serves as a major milestone for a series that often finds itself in the middle of the pack in terms of Nielsen ratings. The 0.38 rating that the medical drama garnered on October 25th may not seem like much, but it was enough to make it the fourth highest-rated broadcast of the evening (only behind juggernauts like 'Bachelor in Paradise', 'FBI', and 'The Voice'). It's hard to imagine that a Fox drama outside of '9-1-1' (or its spinoff series '9-1-1: Lone Star') could perform this well against such stiff competition. This Amy Holden Jones creation is Likely to be Renewed as usual.

Call Me Kat: On October 24, comedian and actor Leslie Jordan sadly passed away in a car accident while on his way to film scenes for 'Call Me Kat'. Jordan played the character "Phil" in the Mayim Bialik sitcom and has been in every episode since the program's start. Production for 'Call Me Kat'  reportedly stopped for the time being and it is currently unknown when it will resume. Seemingly as a result of what happened, 'Kat' surged to a 0.27 Nielsen rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic on the 27th. The comedy improved by nearly 30% from its 'Welcome To Flatch' lead-in and boasted a staggering 50% week-to-week increase. Nonetheless, it is still unlikely that 'Kat' will be back for season four. The death of a series regular does not bode well for the future of any program and the sudden growth is almost certainly due to the media attention surrounding Jordan's death. As the weeks progress, these new viewers will probably lose interest and the series will sink back to its normal level. 'Kat' is Likely to be Canceled as of October 29, 2022.

Welcome To Flatch: 'Call Me Kat' and 'The Resident' were not the only shows to hit a new season high this week. Struggling sitcom 'Welcome To Flatch' grew to a 0.21 on October 27th and tied its highest rating of all time. That sounds quite impressive due to the semantics, but this remains an extremely poor performance for a series on a big 4 network. Its 'Hell's Kitchen' lead-in (0.46) also soared to a new high at 8, meaning 'Flatch' retained a meager 45% of the Gordon Ramsay staple. 'Flatch' is once again Likely to be Canceled and has now fallen behind 'Kat' to become the lowest-rated program on the Fox network (Flatch has a 0.186 average that rounds up to a 0.19 while 'Kat' has grown to a 0.194).

Tuesday TV Ratings 10/25/22: Bachelor in Paradise Tops the Night, The Resident Hits Season High for 100th Episode, The Rookie: Feds Back Down (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Fox drama 'The Resident' (0.38, +0.07) soared to a new season high for its 100th episode, but struggling freshman 'Monarch' (0.21, +0.01) only managed to gain a hundredth. On ABC, 'Bachelor in Paradise' (0.63) was nearly a full tenth higher than last week (0.55), but that did not stop 'The Rookie: Feds' (0.24, -0.05) from sinking in the 10PM hour. 'The Voice' (0.62, +0.02) and 'La Brea' (0.35, +0.03) burned brighter on NBC while 'New Amsterdam' (0.27, -0.01) lost a tick. CBS's reruns of 'FBI' (0.41), 'FBI: International' (0.35), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.29) were strong enough to be competitive with the first-run broadcasts of the night. 'The Winchesters' (0.09, +0.02) and 'Professionals' (0.05, +0.01) grew on the CW.

Finals Update: 'The Resident' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 10/18/22: The Rookie: Feds and FBI: Most Wanted Rise, La Brea and The Winchesters Slide, The Voice Stable (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Despite the fact that ABC's 'Bachelor in Paradise' (0.55) was unchanged when compared to last Tuesday, spinoff series 'The Rookie: Feds' (0.29, +0.06) was able to rise significantly for a crossover episode with its parent show. On NBC, 'The Voice' (0.60, 0.00) held even as 'La Brea' (0.32, -0.06) fell to another new low. This marks the third-straight week that 'La Brea' has declined, with each episode since its season premiere dropping by half a point or more in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Even as its lead-in crumbled, 10PM drama 'New Amsterdam' (0.28, +0.04) rose by four-hundredths. CBS's 'FBI' (0.53, -0.02) shed two-hundredths while 'FBI: International' (0.48, +0.08) and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.48, +0.10) surged. Just a week after hitting a new season high, Fox drama 'The Resident' (0.31, -0.05) slipped to its lowest rating on record. 'Monarch' (0.20, -0.01) experienced a more subtle decline and avoided "new low" territory. New CW series 'The Winchesters' (0.07, -0.05) crashed in week two after starting out strong. 'Professionals' (0.04, -0.01) ticked down from a debut that was already rather weak.

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary ratings.

Tuesday TV Ratings 10/11/22: The Winchesters Starts Solid by CW Standards, The Voice Down, New Amsterdam and The Rookie: Feds Hit New Lows, Bachelor in Paradise Rises (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: The CW's new drama 'The Winchesters' (0.12) posted a strong rating by the network's standards, especially since most CW shows cannot clear the 0.10 threshold in the current day. 'Winchesters' led into the lackluster launch of 'Professionals' (0.05). ABC's 'Bachelor in Paradise' (0.55) was only a hundredth lower than the previous Tuesday, but 'The Rookie: Feds' (0.23, -0.07) suffered an even steeper decline in week three than it did in week two. NBC offerings 'The Voice' (0.60, -0.10), 'La Brea' (0.38, -0.06), and 'New Amsterdam' (0.24, -0.07) all crumbled when compared to their week-ago outings. 'FBI' (0.55, -0.02), 'FBI: International' (0.40, -0.06), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.38, -0.07) all took a hit on CBS. On Fox, 'The Resident' (0.36, +0.04) and 'Monarch' (0.21, +0.04) were each up by four-hundredths.

Finals Update: 'The Voice' (+0.1) and 'The Resident' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 10/4/22: La Brea, Bachelor in Paradise, The Rookie: Feds, and Monarch All Slip By Varying Amounts, FBI Rises (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: ABC's 'Bachelor in Paradise' (0.54, -0.02) dipped by two-hundredths from Monday's episode and led into the second installment of 'The Rooke: Feds' (0.30, -0.04). Though 'Feds' stayed pretty close to its premiere rating, the drama found itself in last place in the 10PM timeslot. On CBS, 'FBI' (0.57, +0.03) grew by three-hundredths while 'FBI: International' (0.46, -0.02) and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.45, -0.02) shed two-hundredths each. NBC's 'The Voice' (0.70) was a hundredth lower than Monday's episode but a hundredth higher than it was last Tuesday. 'La Brea' (0.44, -0.05) and 'New Amsterdam' (0.31, -0.02) slipped in the back-half of the evening. Fox's 'The Resident' (0.32, -0.01) lost a hundredth and simultaneously fell to a new low. At 9, 'Monarch' (0.17, -0.07) collapsed to a new low despite pulling off an unprecedented rise the week prior. The CW had the meager season finales of 'Leonardo' (0.03, -0.01) and 'Devils' (0.03, 0.00).

Finals Update: 'The Voice' (+0.1), 'FBI' (+0.1), and 'FBI: International' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 9/27/22: The Rookie: Feds Has Weak Start, La Brea Nears Low in Return, Bachelor in Paradise Premiere Hits New Low (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: ABC's 'Bachelor in Paradise' (0.65) debuted with a new series low and was just over 30% behind its August 2021 debut (0.93). At 10, spinoff series 'The Rookie: Feds' (0.34) outdid the return of 'The Rookie' itself (0.31) but barely retained half of its lead-in. Unless it manages to stabilize fast, the future is looking rather bleak for 'Feds'. On NBC, sophomore drama 'La Brea' (0.49) returned close to its delivery from late season one but managed to avoid hitting a new series low, something that almost seems like a feat in this day and age. 'The Voice' (0.69, -0.04) and 'New Amsterdam' (0.33, -0.06) dealt with medium-sized drops at 8 and 10 respectively. CBS drama 'FBI' (0.54, -0.10) lost a full tenth from its premiere while 'FBI: International' (0.48, -0.02) and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.47, -0.04) dealt with more digestible declines. Fox's 'The Resident' (0.33, -0.02) shed two-hundredths from its week-ago start and tied its series low. At 9, struggling 'Monarch' (0.24, +0.03) somehow grew by three-hundredths and was the only show of the evening to rise on a week-to-week basis. The only issue here is that it was still the lowest-rated, non-CW program of the night. 'Leonardo' (0.04, -0.01) and 'Devils' (0.03, -0.01) lost a hundredth apiece on the CW.

Finals Update: 'The Voice' (+0.1), 'La Brea' (+0.1), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (+0.1) adjusted up.

FOX Renew/Cancel Week 1: Funeral Plans Arranged For ’Monarch’

Predictions for 9/24/22

Below are the first renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2022-23 television season. One new drama has debuted thus far and is noticeably underperforming in the Adults 18-49 demographic when compared to returning shows. As always, only scripted programming will be taken into account in this column.

9-1-1: '9-1-1' began season six with a sturdy 0.69 rating and was down by just 9% from its year-ago premiere. Outside of ABC's NFL game, the procedural drama beat out every program on the evening of September 19th, including NBC juggernaut 'The Voice'. Despite being the oldest drama in the current Fox roster, it remains the strongest of the pack. As a result, '9-1-1' is Certain to be Renewed.

Monarch: At face value, the 0.91 rating that 'Monarch' posted for its series debut looks fantastic. A number of this size should be enough for Fox to award it a multi-season renewal and greenlight a spinoff series. That is, until you pull back the curtain and realize it had a 2.8 lead-in from an NFL post-game show. Once 'Monarch' was stripped of that cushiony football boost, it eroded down to a measly 0.21 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic, a whopping 77% below its premiere from just 9 days prior. The country music drama retained just 60% of 'The Resident' and went lower than every episode of 'Our Kind of People', the series that occupied this timeslot last year and was canceled after just 12 episodes. Though anything is possible in a world where 'Welcome To Flatch' can score a renewal, it is highly unlikely that 'Monarch' will make it past season one, meaning it is Likely to be Canceled.

The Cleaning Lady: In its first season, 'The Cleaning Lady' performed just well enough to secure a second season but never felt like anything more than a passable player. Middling freshmen shows like that tend to deal with a sophomore slump and 'Cleaning Lady' was unable to buck that trend. The Elodie Yung vehicle returned with a new series low out the gate, posting a mediocre 0.35 rating and retaining just half of its '9-1-1' lead-in (0.69). This is clearly an unsatisfactory performance and puts the series in a shaky position. For now, this crime drama is Likely to be Renewed, but that may change if it slips much further from this semi-acceptable level.

The Resident: 'The Resident' opened its sixth season with the same 0.35 rating that 'The Cleaning Lady' garnered but looked a good bit better since it does not air after a powerhouse like '9-1-1'. However, that does not mean that this seasoned medical drama performed exceptionally well. As always, this series only looks as good as it does because the other dramas on the Fox network are doing worse than it. Only time will tell if the middle-of-the-road performance of 'The Resident' will be enough to warrant a seventh season renewal. Since it has not had a massive decline and appears stronger than the non-'9-1-1' offerings, it remains Likely to be Renewed...for now.

Premiere Tuesday TV Ratings 9/20/22: FBI Shows Return Up from Finales, Monarch Abysmal, The Bachelorette Rises for Finale, The Resident Returns Steady (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Premiere night continued on as CBS rolled out the red carpet for the returns of 'FBI' (0.64), 'FBI: International' (0.50), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.51). All three dramas improved from their season finales that aired in spring 2022 (0.56/0.44/0.41), but the lineup noticeably trailed its Fall 2021 launch (0.72/0.59/0.66). On NBC, the Tuesday edition of 'The Voice' (0.73) and drama 'New Amsterdam' (0.39) both shed about 30% from their year-ago starts (1.09/0.54). After mustering up a football-boosted 0.91 for its series premiere, Fox drama 'Monarch' (0.21, -0.70) completely collapsed for its timeslot debut. In the 8PM slot, 'The Resident' (0.35) tied its May '22 finale but was 30% lower than its 2021 return (0.50). ABC staple 'The Bachelorette' (0.90, +0.01) picked up a hundredth for its season finale and topped the night effortlessly. 'Leonardo' (0.05, 0.00) and 'Devils' (0.04, 0.00) were both stable on the CW.

Finals Update: 'The Bachelorette' (+0.1) and 'The Resident' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 5/17/22: Mr. Mayor Rises for Series Finale, This Is Us Approaches Season High in Penultimate Episode, The Resident Slightly Up for Season Finale

Ratings Analysis: NBC sitcom 'Mr. Mayor' (0.27, +0.02) ended its two-season run in unremarkable fashion but was still able to rise by two-hundredths for its last hurrah. Airing right before the final episode of the Ted Danson sitcom, recently-renewed 'Young Rock' (0.35, -0.03) dropped by three-hundredths. At 9, 'This Is Us' (0.95, +0.14) climbed to its highest rating in over four months for its penultimate episode, with this serving as the second strongest episode of the season overall. 10PM drama 'New Amsterdam' (0.38, +0.01) picked up a hundredth. Fox's 'The Resident' (0.35, +0.02) had a small uptick on finale night, and 'Name That Tune' (0.26, +0.01) grew alongside it. On CBS, 'FBI' (0.56, -0.03) lost three-hundredths for its finale as 'FBI: International' (0.54, +0.03) rose by the same amount. 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.48, +0.01) gained a hundredth at 10. ABC's 'Holey Moley' (0.36, -0.01) shed a hundredth, but 'The Chase' (0.27, -0.08) and 'Who Do You Believe?' (0.18, -0.04) fell by more alarming degrees. The CW got double-o-sevens out of a pair of 'Superman & Lois' reruns (0.07/0.07).

The Resident Renewed by Fox

The Resident will continue to reside on Fox's schedule, as Fox has renewed the medical drama for a sixth season. The series rates towards the middle of Fox's scripted lineup, with a 0.43 average, remaining a reliably decent player for Fox, just as it's been since its premiere. The show has anchored Tuesday nights on Fox since its second season, and stars Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greenwood, Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Jane Leeves. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Tuesday TV Ratings 5/10/22: FBI: Most Wanted Holds Steady, The Resident Sinks to Series Low, This Is Us and New Amsterdam Rise, Naomi Ends Lower (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: NBC sitcoms 'Young Rock' (0.38, +0.04) and 'Mr. Mayor' (0.25, +0.03) enjoyed minor upticks while dramas 'This Is Us' (0.81, +0.12) and 'New Amsterdam' (0.37, +0.11) each grew by more than a full tenth. 'Amsterdam' was only two-hundredths higher than last Tuesday but well above its low-rated Monday episode (0.26). 'FBI' (0.59, +0.04) and 'FBI: International' (0.51, +0.02) inched up while 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.47) held steady at 10. Fox drama 'The Resident' (0.33, -0.05) and game show 'Name That Tune' (0.25, -0.05) forfeited five-hundredths apiece. 'Resident' hit a new series low as 'Tune' tied its previously-set low. ABC summer offering 'Holey Moley' (0.37, -0.06) fell by six-hundredths from its week-ago premiere while 'The Chase' (0.35, +0.06) rose by that exact same amount. 'Who Do You Believe?' (0.22, -0.03) declined by half the amount that 'Moley' did in the 10PM timeslot. The CW's 'Naomi' (0.05, -0.03) slid down to a new series low at 8 but ticked up a bit for its 9PM finale (0.06).

Finals Update: 'FBI' (+0.1), 'Young Rock' (+0.1), 'Holey Moley' (+0.1), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (+0.1) adjusted up.
