OFF SCRIPT
Season 1, Episode 6: "Notes"
INT. HARRY’S APARTMENT - 6:12 AM
Dark room.
Harry asleep on couch surrounded by scripts, storyboards and
empty takeout containers.
His phone starts vibrating aggressively.
He groans awake.
Looks at screen:
MAXWELL WRIGHT
6:12 AM
Harry stares at it.
Lets it ring.
Immediately gets a text.
“Quick thought.”
Harry closes his eyes.
Another text arrives.
“Actually several.”
Harry slowly sits up.
Opens email.
Subject line: RED VEIL NOTES: URGENT
Harry scrolls.
And scrolls.
And scrolls.
His expression slowly dies.
CUT TO:
INT. SOUNDSTAGE - MORNING
Harry walks in holding printed pages stapled together.
Thick.
Very thick.
Zoey sees the stack immediately.
ZOEY: No.
Harry drops the stack onto a table with a THUD.
HARRY: One hundred and
thirty-six notes.
Silence.
Clay looks over.
CLAY: Is that bad?
Zoey just stares at him.

SCRIPT
INT. TALKING HEAD ROOM - MORNING - HARRY
HARRY: Studio notes are
supposed to help improve the movie. Sometimes they do. Most of the time it’s
like getting relationship advice from somebody actively ruining their own
marriage.
INT. PRODUCTION OFFICE - MORNING
Harry and Zoey sit across from Maxwell and Kara.
The giant notes packet sits on the table.
Maxwell calm as ever.
MAXWELL: First of all,
lots to love.
Harry waits.
MAXWELL: The atmosphere’s
strong.
Beat.
MAXWELL: Which is why we
need to make sure the younger audiences survive the atmosphere emotionally.
Harry blinks slowly.
HARRY: What does that
mean?
Maxwell checks notes.
MAXWELL: Well for example,
page forty-two.
Zoey flips pages already irritated.
MAXWELL: There’s a silence
lasting eleven seconds.
ZOEY: Yeah.
MAXWELL: Can we shorten
that?
HARRY: Why?
MAXWELL: Attention spans.
Zoey stares.
ZOEY: It’s a horror movie.
MAXWELL: Exactly. We don’t
want dead air.
Harry genuinely doesn’t know where to begin.
Kara jumps in.
KARA: Also there’s concern
the movie’s “too dark.”
HARRY: It’s called The
Red Veil.
KARA: Emotionally dark.
Beat.
ZOEY: People die.
MAXWELL: Yes but maybe
with slightly more momentum.
INT. SOUNDSTAGE - LATER
Harry and Zoey walk quickly through set reading notes.
Both exhausted already.
HARRY: “Can the killer
feel more iconic.”
ZOEY: What does that even
mean?
HARRY: “Could the house
have a clearer layout.”
Zoey stops walking.
ZOEY: It’s an old house.
Harry flips another page.
HARRY: “Too much
breathing.”
Beat.
ZOEY: Okay now they’re
just stupid.
Harry laughs tiredly.
HARRY: Oh no.
ZOEY: What?
HARRY: “Can we add a scene
where the group becomes friends earlier so audiences root for them.”
Zoey grabs the packet.
Reads.
Looks horrified.
ZOEY: They want a bonding
montage.
INT. TALKING HEAD ROOM - ZOEY
ZOEY: Executives love
friendship because friendship tests well. Realistically, if you’re trapped in a
murder house with six people for three days, statistically you’re going to hate
at least two of them.
INT. MAIN SET - AFTERNOON
Harry tries shooting a simple hallway scene.
Everything keeps stopping because of new notes arriving.
Maya rushes over.
MAYA: Maxwell has another
thought.
Harry doesn’t even turn around.
HARRY: Tell him I’m
filming.
MAYA: I did.
Beat.
MAYA: He had another
thought after that.
Harry closes his eyes.
INT. VIDEO VILLAGE - LATER
Harry reviewing takes.
Aaron sits beside him.
AARON: You okay?
HARRY: I got a note this
morning asking if fear could feel “more premium.”
Aaron nods seriously.
AARON: That’s hard.
Harry turns.
HARRY: You don’t know what
that means either, right?
AARON: Not remotely.
Beat.
AARON: But I support you.
INT. WRITERS’ ROOM - AFTERNOON
Zoey rewrites pages furiously.
Harry enters carrying food.
Drops a sandwich beside her.
ZOEY: What’s this?
HARRY: Peace offering.
ZOEY: You didn’t do the
notes.
HARRY: I forwarded them
though.
Beat.
Zoey eats despite herself.
Harry sits.
Quiet.
HARRY: Do you ever think
maybe they’re right sometimes?
Zoey looks up immediately.
Not angry.
Just surprised he admitted it.
ZOEY: About what?
Harry gestures vaguely.
HARRY: Accessibility.
Pace. Whatever.
Beat.
HARRY: I don’t want to
make something people disconnect from.
Zoey studies him carefully now.
ZOEY: That’s not the same
thing as making something smaller.
That lands.
Harry nods slowly.
INT. TALKING HEAD ROOM – MAXWELL
MAXWELL: Creative people
always think executives want to ruin films. We don’t. We want more people to
watch them than twelve Reddit moderators.
INT. CAST HOLDING - LATER
Nick reads notes packet.
Confused.
NICK: Wait, they think the
movie needs more jokes?
Clay points at page.
CLAY: No, look. “Humor
should emerge organically.”
Beat.
CLAY: What does that mean?
Lucy looks up from phone.
LUCY: It means somebody
important laughed once and now they think they understand comedy.
INT. SOUNDSTAGE - EVENING
Harry finally loses patience.
Crew waiting.
Actors waiting.
Everything stalled.
Maxwell enters calmly.
MAXWELL: How are we doing?
Harry turns.
HARRY: Honestly?
Beat.
HARRY: Not great.
Silence on set.
Even crew notices tension.
Harry steps closer.
HARRY: We keep changing
scenes halfway through shooting them.
MAXWELL: That’s
filmmaking.
HARRY: No, that’s panic.
Quiet.
Harry immediately regrets saying it out loud.
But Maxwell stays calm.
Always calm.
MAXWELL: Harry.
Beat.
MAXWELL: This movie costs
ninety million dollars.
Harry says nothing.
MAXWELL: Everybody here’s
scared.
That actually shifts the room slightly.
MAXWELL: The difference is
some people hide it better.
Long beat.
Then Maxwell notices the set.
MAXWELL: This does look
good though.
And just like that, he walks away.
Leaving Harry somehow more frustrated.
INT. MAIN SET - NIGHT
Harry quietly resets the scene.
No more note discussions.
No more interruptions.
Just work.
Zoey watches him from monitor.
Tegan takes position.
Aaron too.
Harry looks around.
Crew exhausted.
Actors exhausted.
Everybody overwhelmed.
Then simply:
HARRY: Let’s just shoot
the scene.
The scene begins.
Simple. Tense. Atmospheric.
The exact kind of scene the notes wanted changed.
And it’s good.
Really good.
Zoey watches monitor beside Harry.
Quietly:
ZOEY: Don’t tell them this
worked.
Harry smiles slightly.
INT. PRODUCTION OFFICE - LATER
Maxwell reviews the footage alone.
Kara beside him.
Silence while scene plays.
Then:
KARA: That’s actually
strong.
Maxwell nods once.
Beat.
MAXWELL: Cut three seconds
from the pause.
INT. SOUNDSTAGE - NIGHT
Harry sits alone on set reading remaining notes.
Zoey walks over.
Looks at giant packet.
ZOEY: Still reading those?
HARRY: I’m trying to
figure out if “less emotionally European” is an insult.
Zoey sits beside him.
Beat.
ZOEY: It is.
Harry nods.
Quiet.
Then:
HARRY: You know the worst
part?
ZOEY: What?
HARRY: A few of them were
actually good notes.
Zoey sighs.
ZOEY: Yeah.
Beat.
ZOEY: That’s how they get
you.
