The CW Renew/Cancel 2021-22 Wrap-Up: Final Thoughts on Legacies, Charmed, Dynasty & More Amid a Mass Exodus of Programming

 

The end has arrived for this season, and all of The CW's renewals and cancellations have been announced. That means it's time for me to take a look back at the season that was, discussing my hits and misses and thoughts on the future of a network entering an era of change.

The CW Cancels Naomi

 

The CW has canceled Naomi after a single season. The cancellation of the Ava DuVernay superhero drama comes just days after what will now serve as the show's series finale. Naomi was an average performer for The CW this season, with a 0.09 seasonal average that ranked the show in the middle of the pack, tying it with fellow DC dramas Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow. All three of the lower-tier DC dramas ended up canceled this season, with only The Flash and Superman & Lois surviving to next season. Naomi starred Kaci Walfall, Cranston Johnson, Alexandrer Wraith, Mouzam Makkar and Mary-Charles Jones.

Tuesday TV Ratings 5/10/22: FBI: Most Wanted Holds Steady, The Resident Sinks to Series Low, This Is Us and New Amsterdam Rise, Naomi Ends Lower (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: NBC sitcoms 'Young Rock' (0.38, +0.04) and 'Mr. Mayor' (0.25, +0.03) enjoyed minor upticks while dramas 'This Is Us' (0.81, +0.12) and 'New Amsterdam' (0.37, +0.11) each grew by more than a full tenth. 'Amsterdam' was only two-hundredths higher than last Tuesday but well above its low-rated Monday episode (0.26). 'FBI' (0.59, +0.04) and 'FBI: International' (0.51, +0.02) inched up while 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.47) held steady at 10. Fox drama 'The Resident' (0.33, -0.05) and game show 'Name That Tune' (0.25, -0.05) forfeited five-hundredths apiece. 'Resident' hit a new series low as 'Tune' tied its previously-set low. ABC summer offering 'Holey Moley' (0.37, -0.06) fell by six-hundredths from its week-ago premiere while 'The Chase' (0.35, +0.06) rose by that exact same amount. 'Who Do You Believe?' (0.22, -0.03) declined by half the amount that 'Moley' did in the 10PM timeslot. The CW's 'Naomi' (0.05, -0.03) slid down to a new series low at 8 but ticked up a bit for its 9PM finale (0.06). 

Finals Update: 'FBI' (+0.1), 'Young Rock' (+0.1), 'Holey Moley' (+0.1), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 5/3/22: Who Do You Believe? and The Chase Premiere Low, Holey Moley Up From Finale, This Is Us and Mr. Mayor Drop (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: The inclusion of the Muppets did little to boost the season premiere of ABC's 'Holey Moley' (0.43), but the competition series was still able to best the last three episodes from the previous season. 'Moley' was about a tenth below its June 2021 debut (0.53/0.51). At 9PM, 'The Chase' (0.29, -0.02) dropped by two-hundredths from its February finale (0.31) while 'Who Do You Believe?' (0.25) bombed on series premiere night. NBC dealt with a smattering of declines as 'Young Rock' (0.34, -0.06), 'Mr. Mayor' (0.22, -0.09), 'This Is Us' (0.69, -0.15), and 'New Amsterdam' (0.35, -0.02) all went lower than last week. 'The Resident' (0.38, +0.01) and 'Name That Tune' (0.30, +0.02) ticked up on Fox. CW drama 'Superman & Lois' (0.16, -0.02) lost two-hundredths as 'Naomi' (0.08, +0.02) rose by that same amount. CBS aired encores of 'FBI' (0.41), 'FBI: International' (0.35), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.31).
