The Resident has flatlined. Fox has canceled the veteran medical drama after a six-season run, nearly three months after it aired its sixth season finale. The series was a middling player for Fox, with a 0.34 average that put it ahead of numerous already-renewed shows on Fox, including The Cleaning Lady and Alert. However, the show was in its precarious sixth season, the point in which actors' contracts typically need to be renegotiated in order for a show to continue. Its ratings were not enough to encourage Fox to continue with the series, with its lack of ownership by Fox likely also helping to doom the Amy Holden Jones production. Rumors of the cancelation began swirling last month, when pieces of the set were auctioned off. With 107 episodes to its name, it was Fox's live action series with the most episodes to its name of their current programming lineup. Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greeenwood, Malcolm Jamal Warner and Jane Leeves starred in the series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.
Below are the latest renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2022-23 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Since the previous update, only 'The Resident', 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit', and 'Fantasy Island' have aired new episodes. As always, only scripted programming will be taken into account in this column.
Notable Changes: The A18-49 ratings average of 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' (0.45, -0.11) has declined by a little more than a full point. It drops down from #3 to #5 in the overall ranking. This freefall will likely continue given that the football-boosted premiere is inflating the show's average to a ridiculous degree.
The Resident: On January 17th, 'The Resident' finished out its sixth season with a perfectly fine 0.37rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. This serves as the drama's strongest performance since November and would generally be solid enough to justify a renewal on the Fox network. Despite those decent numbers, this series is no longer expected to return for a seventh season. For one, this season had the smallest episode count (13) that the show has had in its run. Considering that the program's 5th season had a full-order of 23 episodes, this type of reduction is clearly not a sign of encouragement for the aging veteran. On top of that,six-year contracts are the standard for regular cast-members on a television series. This means that the stars of 'The Resident' would likely have to sign new contracts for a potential seventh cycle. 'The Resident' may provide modest ratings but it is definitely not strong enough to warrant renegotiations. Filler content like 'Hell's Kitchen' and 'Name That Tune' can provide similar (or better) results at a much lower cost. 'The Resident' is now Likely to be Canceled, even though it deserves a renewal off Nielsen ratings alone.
Alert: For its third episode, 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' held at the same putrid 0.22that it garnered for episode two. The small consolation here is that it grew by three-hundredths of a point from its 'Fantasy Island' lead-in (0.19). Though growth like that is usually a good sign, this is surely not enough to help its chances. 'Alert' is once more Likely to be Canceled and probably won't lose that distinction any time soon.
What's Next?: New drama 'Accused' debuts on Sunday, January 22nd. The fourth season of '9-1-1: Lone Star' premieres on January 24, 2023. Both dramas will enter the chart in the next update after their premiere ratings are made available.
