Finally Apart Season 1 Episode 7: The Call

CATHERINE [thinking to herself]
I'm pretty sure I was meant to be with Nate. He actually seems to care about me. Hopefully I don't screw up for him because he invited me over tonight.

CATHERINE
Time to leave. Kind of weird that he's not picking me up given he does that for a job though. Or is that why?

CATHERINE calls a driver and rides to NATE's house. CATHERINE walks up to the front door and rings the bell. NATE opens the door and welcomes her in.

NATE
Good to see you again, Catherine.

CATHERINE
I figured. [they laugh]

NATE
I made some food. Or actually, bought it. Or actually, had a guy go out and get it for me. But you understand.

CATHERINE
Yeah, somehow I do.

NATE
Make yourself comfortable, and then--[NATE hears his phone ring]. Oh. I have to take this. [NATE goes into the bathroom. CATHERINE can hear him talking.]

NATE [on phone]
Hi sweetheart, good to hear from you again!...Oh I'm good...Yeah, I have to go now...Love you too...Bye.

NATE exits the bathroom and walks over to CATHERINE.

CATHERINE
Who the hell was that??

NATE
Oh. Just...it doesn't matter.

CATHERINE
Oh it does matter, I heard you tell someone you loved them.

NATE
No I didn't!

CATHERINE
You did, I heard you, don't deny it. Who were you talking to, your wife?

NATE
No! I promise!

CATHERINE
Who was it?

NATE
It doesn't matter.

CATHERINE
Yeah it does.

CATHERINE runs to get NATE's phone and calls the number that had just called him.

CATHERINE
Hi, yes, this is Nate's house, you are?...oh. Sorry. Have a nice night now, bye.

NATE
You enjoy talking to my mom?

CATHERINE
Sorry. Why'd you keep it a secret?

NATE
I figured you think I'm some loser if I talked to my mom, given you seem fine with yours living across an entire ocean.

CATHERINE
Nah, it's nice that you're close to your mom. I guess. Right?

NATE
Never really thought about it.

CATHERINE
Well I guess it's sweet that you're in close contact. You know I barely stay in touch with my parents at all.

NATE
Why not?

CATHERINE
No real reason, we just kind of grew apart. Had a family reunion a while back, they moved to Poland, then things went back to normal with that.

NATE
I guess me and you have very different family dynamics. I'm sure my mom would like you though, even though you called her like that. She likes basically any girl who will spend more than a minute of their time with me.

CATHERINE
She must love herself then.

NATE
Oh yeah, she does. She'd win Mom of the Year if they had those, and she ran them. I do like talking to her though, she can get lonely without my dad around.

CATHERINE
What happened to him?

NATE
He left her. She was pretty sad. By the way, how did your husband feel when you left him?

CATHERINE
Oh the separation was very much a mutual decision.

NATE
I see. So, what's going on with your mom blog?

CATHERINE
Not much, just posting pictures, saying my kids are great but also that they're not. I'm not even posting pictures of my kids anymore and I'm pretty sure no one reading cares.

NATE [laughing]
Sounds like a disaster. How many people are reading?

CATHERINE
Four.

NATE
Can I make a suggestion for your mom blog?

CATHERINE
Sure.

NATE
Add my mom as a contributor. I'll text her now.

CATHERINE
Does she do this kind of stuff?

NATE
No, my dad got all the pictures in the divorce.

CATHERINE
That's a thing?

NATE
Not really, he got custody over her phone and that's where all the pictures were?

CATHERINE
And that's a thing?

NATE
Apparently.

CATHERINE
Alright, your mom can be a part of my blog. Maybe she can get my viewership up to five viewers too!

NATE
Oh she will. I'll call her tomorrow.

CATHERINE
By the way, what's her name?

NATE
Meg.

CATHERINE
What's your dad's name?

NATE
Brian.

CATHERINE
Holy crap. I need to know your last name and his last name.

NATE
McCutchenson.

CATHERINE
Oh thank God.

NATE
Why?

CATHERINE
Brian is my dad's name. For a second I thought we were related.

NATE
Oh God that would be weird. Of course, maybe one day we can be.

CATHERINE
I should get going.

CATHERINE [thinking to herself]
That couldn't have gone any better. Was that an awkward exit?

CATHERINE [yelling back]
THAT WASN'T AN AWKWARD EXIT!

NATE
OK? Goodnight.
