The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Canceled by CBS, Will End in May 2026

There's about to be even less talking in late night. CBS has opted to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after its upcoming eleventh season, stating financial reasons as first-run ratings continue to plunge. Despite declining ratings for late night talk shows, The Late Show has been the #1 talk show in its hour for the last several years. It's the second long-running late night program to end recently on CBS, after The Late Last Show two years ago. That show's replacement, After Midnight, also ended recently, putting into question whether CBS will continue original programming in late night at all. After Midnight is being replaced by Byron Allen's Comics Unleashed, which will produce "some" new episodes for its CBS run. In his statement announcing the cancellation, Colbert stated that is not being replaced as host, and that The Late Show is coming to an end entirely. Colbert's iteration of The Late Show will have run for eleven years by its end in May. The franchise first began in 1993, hosted by the legendary David Letterman, who hosted for twenty-two years.
