The Fixer: Fox debuted this business-centric series two Fridays ago, airing two episodes on its premiere nights. It will air two episodes each week for its four-week run, signifying that Fox is, perhaps, just trying to get it off its hands as fast as they possibly can. It's hard to blame them. No one has high expectations for a series debuting on a Friday night in July, but The Fixer's premiere was an outright nightmare. Debuting to a 0.08 and then dropping to a 0.06 for its second episode, I'm hard-pressed to remember a single more abysmal premiere rating on the big four in all of TV history. These are ratings that the CW could realistically match with ease. This premiere rating is no better than the repeat of The Snake (which itself is far from a hit) that aired in the slot just a week prior, and is 2.5x lower than the repeat of Masterchef that kicked off the night on the 4th of July. There's practically nothing that Fox could air that wouldn't do the same as, or likely much better than, this show, and repeats come in at a fraction of the cost. There's no possible way to spin this performance as anything but a stunning failure. It won't be back. A CERTAIN CANCELLATION if I've ever seen one.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: On the other end of the spectrum is Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Jimmy Kimmel's revival of the long-running ABC-turned-syndicated game show has had an interesting run, first debuting as a spring replacement for Stumptown (remember Stumptown?) back in spring 2020. In part due to higher ratings across the board fueled by the COVID lockdown, it performed quite well. ABC brought it back the next fall, and moved it to Sunday nights. It... did not perform well. An OK start got ugly fast, and the show was shelved for a few years. Then, ABC revamped their summer lineup, bringing Millionaire back (again) last year alongside Claim to Fame. It wasn't a pairing that worked all that well together, but Millionaire performed quite respectably on its own. It averaged a 0.34 rating in the key 18-49 demo, not much weaker than its first Kimmel-hosted season when you compare both ratings to the overall TV standards of the time (season one averaged 99% of the 2019-20 league average, season three averaged 90% of the 2023-24 average, and did so in the summer). Now back for season four, it looks to be a keeper. Its 0.38 premiere last week was down a touch from its 2024 premiere, but tied the second-highest rating of season three, which is still an impressive performance. And while I focus more on the demo than on total viewers, it had over 500,000 more viewers than any episode in season three. In fact, its viewership total also came in above all but one episode from season two, which aired nearly five years ago. ABC has to be more than happy with that showing. It's higher than anything Bachelor in Paradise or Press Your Luck have done this season, and not far off from Celebrity Family Feud's season high, and it's ABC's #2 summer show so far (not that there's that much competition). It my not be a summer blockbuster on the level of CBS's Big Brother, but this is a solid show that can help give ABC a bit of a pulse in the summer. It showed that last season, and it showed it again last week. Heck, only five ABC series from the regular season managed a higher average than Millionaire's 0.38, so this isn't only a solid number for the standards of summer. While it's early in its run, it looks promising for another renewal, and begins as a LIKELY RENEWAL.
