The Snake: In just two episodes, The Snake has quickly turned into something of a summer disaster for Fox. This is a network that's used to disaster, and "disaster" is a label that can easily be used to describe the ratings of a sizable portion of their regular season offerings. But this summer has been a reasonably successful one for Fox, with most of its unscripted offerings delivering decent, yet unexciting, ratings -ratings that aren't any worse than most shows on their regular lineup, at a fraction of the cost. The clear exception is The Snake, which is struggling to improve on the ratings of the show it replace, Alert, which was the second-lowest-rated series on the Big 4 networks this season. None of that blame can be place on its lead-in, The 1% Club, which has had a solid start to the season, with a 0.21 average. The Snake is only retaining 63% of that, the worst retention of ANY Fox Summer show this season. Last Tuesday, it easily came in last in the 9 PM hour, despite ABC and CBS both airing repeats. It even lost to the CW (which, admittedly, has been a regular occurrence for Fox Tuesday shows this season, thanks to CW acquiring WWE NXT). Fox has made many questionable renewals in recent years, and they've been pretty merciful with their summer series, but even they have been willing to trim the fat and let go of some of their worst performers. With several of their regular shows on the bench this summer, Fox has no reason to hang onto this show. And even if they didn't have several other reality entries waiting in the wings, it would be hard for a new show to do worse than this one. Its streaming performance dwindled in week two, so that renewal argument has also fallen by the wayside. This show looks more worthy of being yanked from the schedule than renewed, and it's already downgraded to a LIKELY CANCELLATION this week.
Destination X: After a solid start that I praised in this very column, Destination X has quickly found itself in trouble. Though America's Got Talent has seen considerable slippage itself in the last few weeks, dropping 0.17 from June 3 to June 17, Destination X has shed 45% of its demo rating in that time - a deeply concerning drop. It's certainly doing better than the pathetic Yes, Chef, which itself hit a new low last week, but that's damning it with faint praise. Something else important to note is that Destination X's retention of AGT has declined the last two weeks, as the show has dropped at even harsher levels than AGT has. It's gone from 63% retention (which wasn't great, but it's better than we saw from both of the freshman dramas NBC renewed this season) to 55% retention in a few weeks. It's already looking a bit worse than last season's Password did at this point in the season, and it's hitting lower raw ratings, as well. 0.17 - just over half the 2024-25 demo league average - is just not going to cut it. It could rebound from here, as we've already seen sizable week-to-week fluctuations for it, but it's moving in the wrong direction right now. Most post-AGT shows have been canceled in recent years, with NBC rarely having the patience to stick with any summer series outside of their two successful staples, so Destination X has always had that against it. With ratings that now look mediocre at best, and slightly embarrassing at worst (it lost head-to-head to a repeat of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune!), it's starting to look like the path to renewal is slipping away. It's only consolation at this moment is that its Peacock performance isn't looking too bad, popping up in the streamer's top ten for the first time in the last few weeks and spending about half of the last week in the top ten. I'm just not sure that alone be enough, as it isn't delivering in any other metric. It shifts to LEANS CANCELLATION this week.
